Saturday Star 2013-12-14 – Job Opportunities

December 16, 2013

Happy ‘renew your BEM and IEM registration’ week (don’t forget that offshore bank account).

Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me. I need RM360 to get The Star ePaper

  • I see Petrofac is looking for a development manager, engineering manager, tech assistant, operation support engineer, senior maintenance engineer, company site representative (CSR). Send your CVto petrofac.com → Career → Job Search → Location → Malaysia.
  • Not an engineering job, but I see ConocoPhillips has an opening for an office administrator. I guess they are going to open an office in KL?
  • I’m looking for a senior process engineer, 7+ years experience. Send your cv here. Also looking for technical safety persons, metering / measurement engineers and other seniors you think will catch my eye.
  • Nothing of interest this week.

Help me (and you) increase my cloud presence. Pleease use some form of cloud storage, so if you lose your laptop with those oh-so-important reports, be assured that (with Internet access) the files are still accessible. Use my referrals for Dropbox, MiMedia,  SpiderOak, MediaFire, Ubuntu One, Sugar Sync.

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

This week, my theme is, you need to be a better all round engineer. Hence, some selections for the process engineer:

A Simple Guide To Understanding Jet Engines, Process Plant Instrumentation: Design and Upgrade, Mechanical Design of Process Systems: Piping and Pressure Vessels

The IEM has a coffee table book out, Engineering Heritage of Malaysia (no, it is not Datuk Seri Samy Vellu’s bio). Visit here for details.

Food?I had lunch at Chakri Palace, KLCC. Blooming expensive. Anyone want to treat me to dinner there?

IEM Shout Out – One Day Course on on Industrial Waste Water Quality Monitoring and Testing

December 4, 2013

This is a shout out for IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division will be organizing a one day course Industrial Waste Water Quality Monitoring and Testing on the 18th December, 2013 (Wed) at Wisma IEM, PJ. The session is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (registration at 8.30 a.m.) and end around 5 p.m. Participant will be granted 5.5 CPD/ PDP hours at the end of the course.

Wastewater monitoring and control conducted by competent personnel is very important to provide accurate characteristics of the water so that the actual condition of the treatment efficiency can be evaluated effectively. In practice, precise and consistent measurement is sometimes difficult to obtain and most of the time is due to the lack of knowledge and experience in analysis.
This workshop is aimed to help in capacity building and to build confidence in wastewater monitoring and analysis. In this case, any technicians, engineers, chemists, scientists and researchers whom working in wastewater related field are greatly welcome. The objective of this workshop is to provide knowledge, introductory training and basic skills on water analysis through lectures and discussion as a part of professional career development.

Ir. Dr. Chong Mei Fong received her PhD, on “modeling, simulation and design of membrane based palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment plant from pilot plant studies”, in 2007 at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Malaysia. She is the Associate Professor from Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Chair for Postgraduate Research Sub-Committee, Chair for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WinSET) working group and the Deputy Head of Research for the Environmental Research Division. She is also a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineer Malaysia (BEM), a member registered with The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), affiliate member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and fellow of Higher Education Academy, UK.

IEM Shout Out – One Day Course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures (postponed)

December 3, 2013

This is a shout out for IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division will be organizing a one day course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures on the 9th December, 2013 (Monday) at Wisma IEM, PJ. The session is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (registration at 8.30 a.m.) and end around 5 p.m. Participant will be granted 3.5 CPD/ PDP hours at the end of the course.

Corrosion has been a concern in many industries. Corrosion can cause unexpected failures of structures and can result in huge losses in life, production as well as environmental. It has been reported that corrosion can, on average, causing around 3% of GNP in many industrialized countries.

Cathodic protection (CP) is one of few most widely applied corrosion protection methods. It has been successfully used to overcome corrosion and extension of service life of structures. The course is aimed to provide the understanding of principle of CP, techniques of CP survey and measurements and interpretation of CP survey data.

The course will introduce you to the following topics:

  • Principle of Cathodic Protection
  • Type of Cathodic Protection
  • Criteria of Cathodic Protection
  • Electrical Measurement for Cathodic Protection System
  • Special Cathodic Protection Survey Techniques

Mr. Kang Kim Ang, MSc. Corrosion (UMIST. U.K.), Dip. Materials Engineering (TARC), C.Eng., FIMM, Micorr, a Chartered Engineer registered with Engineering Council, UK and the Corrosion Specialist and Cathodic Protection Specialist accredited by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM).

Mr. Kang has over 25 years of experience in corrosion control, Cathodic Protection, heavy‐duty coatings, passive fire protection, and corrosion inspection in the oil & gas, marine, petrochemical, construction and industrial sectors in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philipines, Vietnam, Myanmar and some Middle East countries. He is currently the managing director of CORRTROL Group of companies, the local leading companies which specialized in EPCC, consultancy, R&D and various services in the field of corrosion protection for oil and gas projects.

Engr. Ong Wei Rex, M.Eng. Mechanical (UTM), B.Eng. Mechanical (Material) Engineering (UTM), Cathodic Protection Specialist by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and CP Technologist Level 2 accredited by Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM).
