Shout Out – IEM OGMTD

October 22, 2009

Not really a shoutout, more of an invitation to join. The Oil, Gas & Mining Tech Division will be having their (our?) AGM on Sat, 21st Nov, 2009. Please come and get yourself elected into the Committee. What do you get, you ask? Below are photos of a typical light snack while we sit around in our smoking jackets and discuss whether our cartel should raise the price of Primax 95:

Malaysia – President Of International Gas Union

October 17, 2009

Taken from the pages of the Star, dateline 2009-10-11:

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has taken over the presidency of the International Gas Union (IGU) with Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim of PETRONAS filling the top post until 2012.

Dr Abdul Rahim, who is PETRONAS’ research technology vice-president, is also Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) president.

For those of you not in the know, Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahim was VP, Gas Business Unit, PETRONAS.

What does the IGU do, you wonder? From the IGU’s web pages, it’s objective is to “promote the technical and economic progress of the gas industry.”

Snail mail to Human Resource Section NIPPON OIL EXPLORATION (MALAYSIA) LTD, Lot 1168, 3rd Floor, Wisma Interhill, Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre, 98000 Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia before the 20th.

My eating recommendation for the week will be Restoran Tong Juan Seafood. For those who have ever worked in the O&G industry on the East Coast of Malaysia would have gone there sometime, usual after thinking ‘Where is there to eat around here?’ Of course, you would also have visited Hai Peng as well

ESPs in Malaysia – Finally

October 7, 2009

As I go on my marketing rounds, I went and visited Dato’ R. We went quaffing and dungeon crawling … nope wrong blog. I gotta stop playing Nethack.

Anyhow, he shared with me that he and his team has installed electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) in a Malaysian operations environment. The units are installed using CTUs as opposed to drilling rigs (to the workover engineers among you, can you explain why this is important?). The ESPs are Western Submersible Pumps.

Gaslift now has competion. Some of the ESP advantages I can think of are:

  • less compression capacity is required, as the volume of recirculated gas is reduced.
  • Improved controllability: flowrate only depends on pump perfomance curves, rather than say, compressor availability.
  • Mature Tech: someone count how many ESPs are in Acheh.

Though I think that use of ESPs indicate that Malaysian fields are acknowledged to be on the decline.

From the Star – SapuraCrest JV gets RM600mil job

October 6, 2009

Taken from the Star, dateline 2009-10-02

KUALA LUMPUR: Sapuracrest Petroleum Bhd’s joint venture company, SapuraAcergy Sdn Bhd has secured a US$170mil (RM600mil) contract from Apache Energy Ltd for the transportation and installation of offshore facilities in Australia.

SapuraAcergy is a joint venture company equally owned by SapuraCrest and Acergy S.A.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, SapuraCrest said the contract, which was part of the Devil Creek development project involves transporting and installing about 91 km of 16-inch rigid pipeline including a shallow water beach approach, subsea tie-ins and stabilisation works together with a wellhead platform of 1,700 metric tonne four leg jacket and a 450 metric tonne topside processing module.

Saturday Star 2009-09-26 – Job Opportunities

September 28, 2009

First of all, let me say Selamat Hari Raya Eidul Adha Fitri, maaf zahir dan batin, and happy holidays (you can tell I’m a 1Malaysia Malaysian, right?).

  • Synergy is looking for safety engineers. Visit the Synergy websites (Jakarta and KL) for contact details.
  • Murphy is looking for people with the right fit. I hope they don’t mean they are looking for ‘V’ type body shapes, that’s blatant discrimination against us unfit types (I’m more of an ‘A’ shape). Let’s see, they are looking for snr reservoir eng, metering tech, petroleum engineer. Apply here.
  • And if nothing grabs your fancy, KFC is conducting a set of walk-in interviews for Assistant Restaurant Manager Trainee. Hey, they have a clear promotion structure, hourly rates and great food.
