Saturday Star 2010-01-23 – Job Opportunities

January 25, 2010

Nothing much this week, the papers were kinda thin on O&G adverts.

  • Synergy is looking for lead safety engineers, safety specialists, junior and lead process engineers and technical writers. We’re on an expansion drive, people! Visit the Synergy website for contact details. For leads, you need 5 years plus experience in the oil & gas industry. For safety specialist applicants, you need to be well versed in HAZOP, HAZID, QRA, FERA and Formal Safety Assessment. Ah, heck. If you have more than 5 years experience in O&G, apply. If you have less than 5, send a donation to the offshore account, and still get abuse. For juniors, go pick up a copy of Cambridge’s ChemEng syallabus, and go study like the Tripods (all of them) are tomorrow.

From IEM – Mentor Guidelines

January 24, 2010

I turned up at the IEM a week ago 2010-01-18, to attend a presentation / workshop on how to improve the mentor system to create and nurture responsible members of humanity. I don’t have pictures of the fisticuffs, but I do have handouts as to the minimum expected from a mentor.

Humor aside, if you think that the quality of engineers needs some butt kicking, excuse me tender nurturing, please volunteer your time and skills, and heal the world together.

From The Star – Fuel Pricing by Car Size

January 19, 2010

Do I need to elaborate on this article from The Star deadline 2010-01-08? It should be retitled ‘Fuel Pricing Finally Goes Bananas’:

PETALING JAYA: The bigger your car, the more you will have to pay for petrol from May 1.
This is because the Government is going to change the way fuel is subsidised.
It is planning for a fuel pricing mechanism that will ensure only targeted groups, particularly those from the lower-income, will receive fuel subsidy.
Also, foreigners who drive into the country to fill up their tanks will not be eligible for subsidy and will have to pay more for fuel.
“The bigger the engine, the higher petrol will cost,” Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all eliminating the fuel subsidy in conjunction with a concerted effort to entice me to use a safe, reliable, efficient, cost effective, redundent public transport system. My dark sense of humor was so tickled by the above article that it shut down for a few minutes for want to address all the things that can go screwy.

If you want some follow up articles, try here, here.

  • I see PETRONAS has a walk-in interview session on the 23 & 24 January 2010 at the KL Convention Centre (remind me not to go to in that weekend).  They have postions for executives/ engineers/ technical coaches & technical professionals. You need at least a BEng and 8 (eight) years related experience. Don’t come crying to me if they reject you because you only have 5 years. Hah, they want you to bring their latest resume (no CVs), to passport photos, NRIC, academic qualifications and last 3 pay slips (of course, everyone will bring in ‘adjusted’ slips if they had any sense).
  • Muhibbah Petrochemical Engineering is looking for senior QA / QC, project planning and control engineer. You can send your resume in here.
  • Turboservices is looking for a opns & maint technician. Send email here.
  • Petrosains is looking for people as well, I guess.

No food recommendations this week. I’ll be in Kerteh InshaAllah this Wed, so I guess it’s Sundram banana leaf rice for lunch. Sigh, how I miss Pak Ali’s nasi biryani…

The SOGE Story – Visit to Cepu

January 16, 2010

Some of SOGE“s staff recently travelled to Cepu on business. I thought I’d show you the photos they brought back. I remember when I was a wee Exxon lad, and the task of landing the Cepu PSC was a hot topic. Speaking of Exxon-Cepu, here’s some news. And more news. And more news. None good.
