From The Star – Oil spill in Singapore Strait has no lasting effect

June 3, 2010

Taken from The Star, dateline 2010-06-02:

KUCHING: The oil spill from the collision of two vessels in the Singapore Strait appears to have no lasting effect on the affected coastal areas, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said.

He said he visited the area last Sunday and could see the difference between one spot which had been cleaned up and the areas yet to be cleaned.

“Once the beach has been cleaned, there is no effect and no more odour of oil because the sea current is moving and there is clean water flowing in,” he told reporters at his Gawai open house at Taman BDC here yesterday.

Le Grandeur – Food Recommendation

June 2, 2010

Since I missed out on food recommendations last Saturday, how about I give you one now? Though, you have to visit Le Grandeur in Balikpapan to be introduced to the spread below. Why was I there? I was visiting a onshore receiving facility in Senipah.

From Bernama: Malaysia Likely To Be Net Oil Importer By 2011

June 1, 2010

Once Malaysia starts importing crude, be prepared for a long slide (or climb) as Malaysians are forced to reduce their dependency on subsidies. And expect a rise in oil & gas opportunities as we try harder to extract the remaining oils in our soil. I suspect deepwater and enhanced oil recovery engineering will have an increased importance.

Taken from Bernama, dateline 2010-05-27:

Malaysia is likely to become an oil importer as early as next year at the current rate it is consuming petroleum, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Idris Jala on Thursday.

Malaysians continue to be among the highest fuel consumers per capita in the world fuel consumption habits pattern which generally has remained relatively unchanged despite increased oil prices in 2008.

He also said that approximately 70 per cent of the government’s liquid petroleum gas (LPG) subsidy goes to commercial concerns and not the intended households.

About 30 per cent of the cooking oil subsidy is also abused, he said.

He said the government is proposing to phase out the petrol subsidy gradually in line with its move to strategically position Malaysia’s economy on a stronger footing to realise the aspirations of Vision 2020, which is to achieve a developed, high-income nation status.

Saturday Star 2010-05-29 – Job Opportunities

May 31, 2010

Commercial note: I’m monetizing this site, so support me by purchasing my recommendations, or buying through my Amazon store.

  • No jobs of note were advertised last Saturday. Only job worth applying for is as admin staff at Synergy. We are also looking for someone with the ability and personality to fill up the position as a permanent member of the family.

Reflecting the quality and number of interview sessions last week, my recommendation for this week is Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook, Eighth Edition (Chemical Engineers Handbook). I don’t really mind if you buy it from Universiti Malaya (y’know, the uni I couldn’t get in ’cause my grades weren’t good enough) Pekanbuku.

From Bernama: Oil Spill Enters Malaysian Waters

May 29, 2010

The vessel involved in the accident is an MISC vessel, MT Bunga Kelana 3, an Aframax vessel (tracking data here). Was it on its way back from Kerteh port?

From Bernama, dateline 2010-05-27:

The oil spill caused by a collision involving the tanker, MT Bunga Kelana 3, and bulk carrier MV Waily in the Singapore Strait, about 13km southeast of Changi East last Tuesday, has spread into Malaysian waters.

Johor Department of Environment director Dr Zulkifli Abdul Rahman said the spill measuring 1,600-metre long and 960-metre wide, was now 960 metres from the Tanjung Ayam beach in Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.

“Currently, the Southern Region Marine Department is in the midst of preventing the spill from reaching the beach,” he said in a statement here Thursday.

He said the ‘boom’ or equipment to prevent the spill from spreading had been installed.

Apparently the accident hasn’t affected Singapore’s drinking water supply.

MLNG awards US$12.4 million contract for tech upgrade

May 28, 2010

Hmm, from what I understand, the work was in two parts, one to upgrade the system, and one to provide operator training simulators.

Extracted from this article:

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 MAY 2010 — Malaysia Liquefied Natural Gas (MLNG) has awarded a US$12.4 million contract to upgrade and modernise a distributed control system (DCS) to technology services firm Invensys Operations Management.

“The major upgrade will provide by 2014 a continuously current DCS to sustain the productivity and safety of MLNG’s liquid natural gas operations in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia,” said Invensys Operations Management, vice president and managing director, ASEAN, Japan and Taiwan, Terence Chan. “The solution is a distributed control technology, which enhances system reliability and availability, and helps to achieve productivity and safety excellence.”

IEM – University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

May 27, 2010

Ah, it’s fitting that UNMC (almost typed UMNC, Universiti Malaya Nottingham Campus) is surrounded by greenery. You can imagine that Robin Hood is just out of site, looking over something that’s marginally related to Nottingham.

Anyhow, my IEM technical division (Chemical) had a retreat out here on the 15th May 2010, to determine how to align ourselves to become more valuable to IEM and the engineering fraternity as a whole.

I took the opportunity to make a Photosynth view of the Admin Building, from in front of the fountain.

IEM Shout Out – Fitness for Service Course

May 26, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a course on the 2nd and 3rd June, 2010. You’ll get to visit TNB’s Integrated Learning Solution – ILSAS at Bangi in addition to getting 13 CPD or PDP points.

  1. Philosophy of FFS
  2. Introduction to FFS assessment standard
  3. FFS assessment techniques for different type of damages
  4. Damage mechanism identification
  5. Non destructive testing (NDT) techniques for damage detection
  6. Effect of NDT results to FFS assessment

IEM – Photosynth UPM

May 23, 2010

I was invited to give a talk at Process and Food Department, Engineering Faculty, Universiti Putra Malaysia (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia to us old blokes).  I took the opportunity to make a Photosynth view of the Admin Building‘s main foyer.

The talk was a recruitment drive to promote the IEM‘s activities and benefits if you join as a Graduate Member. I also gave them a 20 minute intro job hunting and interview techniques.

I’d be most pleased to give more talks on this topic under the auspices of the IEM. Come on, you know you want to invite me.
