Shout Out – Talk on Hazard Identification (HAZID)
August 4, 2015This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be hosting a talk on the 8th August, 2015. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 8:30). I’m giving the talk, so turn up.
A Hazard Identification (HAZID) study in the oil and gas industry is a formal, systematic and detailed examination of the assets and facilities to identify hazards. The HAZID helps determine the magnitude of the causes and consequences of a hazard, and its associated guidewords. The HAZID is typically performed using guidewords. The HAZID will be used as the basis of the asset’s Risk Register. The talk will address
• The concept of ‘risk’
• The theory behind a HAZID in Malaysia’s oil, gas and petrochemical industry
• Risks captured in a HAZID
• HAZID guidewords
• Differences between a HAZID and a HAZOP

Shout Out – One-Day Course on Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) Training For Workshop Participants
August 4, 2015My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 10th Sovember, 2015. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates. And it’s a big room, so I need to fill the seats.
In the Layer of Protection methodology, a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) designed to eliminate the cause of a risk or minimize the consequence of an event. The expectation of the SIF’s reliability to perform upon demand must be defined so that it is designed appropriately. The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) study is a tool used this.
This full day course is designed to educate participants in the SIL process from the perspective of a SIL team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:
- Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
- Are familiar with the theory and terminology behind Layers of Protection, SIS, SIF, SIL and LOPA
- Are familiar with the different SIL methodologies: risk graph, risk matrix, LOPA.
- Have expectations as to what the SIL workshop will (and won’t) provide.
- Understand what deliverables can be expected from a SIL workshop.
- Have the opportunity to participate in SIL exercise in a safe environment.Opportunity to share SIL experiences.

Shout Out – Talk on Microfluidic Technology: Theory and How It Can Transform Industrial Practice
August 4, 2015This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be hosting a talk on the 12th August, 2015, by Dr Jitkai Chin. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00).
Since microfluidic technology was introduced nearly two decades ago, it has attracted attention from researchers around the world because of its unique features of miniaturisation – reduced raw material consumption and waste generated, large surface area to volume ratio and etc. In recent years, the technology has been introduced and adapted by pharmaceutical and food industries to improve product quality and energy efficiency. In this talk, the important theories of microfluidic technology will be introduced with examples of application. The talk is suitable for chemical engineers, mechanical engineers as well as electrical and electronic engineers.
This talk intends to raise awareness of participants on the increasing importance of CFD in the oil and gas industry. This is achieved by sharing real life examples of CFD applications in Malaysia and how it helped companies in understanding process and equipment issues and assisted them in making sound engineering decisions.
Dr Jitkai Chin obtained his BEng (Hons) in Chemical and Process Engineering with Biotechnology and PhD from Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of the Sheffield, UK in 2001 and 2007 respectively. He was appointed Assistant Professor in University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus in 2007. He was then promoted to Associate Professor in 2011 with 15 ranking international journal papers and awards behind him. His research interests including the droplet microfluidics, microthrusters, propellants and graphene.

Too many oil hubs?
August 2, 2015Dateline 2015-06-13, The Star:
IT is surprising that Benalec Holdings Bhd is calling off its plans to build a petroleum hub in Tanjung Piai in Johor.
In an announcement this week, the company said the agreement with its partners had lapsed and that there was no intention to pursue the matter further.
Notably, Benalec has influential partners in the form of the Johor royalty and businessman Datuk Daing Malek Daing A Rahman.
The plan included reclaiming and selling about 1,000 acres off the coast of Tanjung Piai for the purpose of constructing and operating a crude oil and petroleum storage facility together with a private jetty.
What is clear though is that with oil and gas (O&G) prices being where they are, all parties planning ventures into this sector have to rethink their business plans, just as the oil majors the world over are admittedly doing.
There are also a significant number of O&G hubs being planned in the state of Johor.

IT is hard to predict when oil prices will rise to more profitable levels again.
But with the economic reasons behind the collapse of global crude oil prices unlikely to go away anytime soon, industry players will just have to brace for a prolonged period of tough business environment.
To remain in the game, many will likely seek consolidation or other merger and acquisition (M&A) exercises.
In Malaysia, such trend is already emerging, with industry observers regarding Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd’s buyout offer for Perdana Petroleum Bhd last month as the start of a consolidation phase for the local oil and gas (O&G) sector.

O&G players must grow in terms of technology, says MPRC

Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corp (MPRC) is pushing for oil and gas (O&G) players to be more innovative in terms of technology in order to be more competitive and to remain sustainable when natural resources are depleted.
Executive director Dr. Shahreen Zainooreen Madros said the majority of O&G service providers are only servicing the local market, despite the sector being a mature industry with an established value chain.
“Eventually when our oil is completely depleted, we hope there is still a services industry in Malaysia to serve the region. The important thing to know is the urgency to develop our services sector. We cannot depend on our natural resource forever because it is a reserve that one day will run out,” he told reporters at the launch of MPRC 100 yesterday. MPRC 100 is a list of top 100 O&G companies operating in Malaysia.

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.
This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:
- Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
- Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
- Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
- Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
- Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
- Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
- Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences
At the end of the session, the participants should:
- Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
- Have experience in a HAZOP session.
- Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for household use was initially marketed by PETRONAS in 12kg cylinders whilst the 50kg cylinders were for industrial use. Dagangan’s survey indicated that on average a household would use 12kg of LPG per month for cooking purposes thus giving the 12kg cylinders a slight advantage in cash outlay as opposed to Shell’s 14kg cylinders….
