Saturday Star 2012-10-20 – Job Opportunities

October 22, 2012

C’mon. Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me.

If you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask.

  • I’m looking for a senior process engineer, 7+ years experience. Send your cv here. Also looking for process safety persons, lead piping designer, lead instrument engineer, and other seniors you think will catch my eye.

Pengerang residents to rally in protest of petroleum complex project

October 21, 2012

Money well diverted can always solve these problems.

Dateline 2012-09-25:

Pengerang residents will hold a rally on Sunday to protest the development of the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) in Johor, in which about 30,000 residents affected by the project will be relocated under a new settlement scheme.

Pengerang Everlasting Green Rally chairman Anis Afida Azli said the development of the PIPC was a 22,500-acre land grab that would lead to loss of sustainability among villagers and was detrimental to the environment.

“The PIPC project involves more than 10 traditional villages that have been in existence for more than 100 years. A total of 28,050 villagers will be affected by the project,” she told reporters outside Parliament today.

She added many villagers were fishermen and farmers who relied on natural resources for a living, and that their relocation to neighbouring villages was not suitable to extend their normal activities.

“Many farmers own farms that need to be harvested and it will take them a very long time to regrow their crops,” she explained.

“The fishermen are also unable to go down to sea because the density of fishermen there (following relocation) will be shifted.”

Anis Afida also said Pengerang’s reputation as a tourist destination will be affected drastically.

“It (Pengerang) is full of natural resources, sea life and unique landform that cannot be found anywhere else in Malaysia,” she said.

“The development of the complex will not only affect the environment, but also the tourist industry in neighbouring places like Desaru and Sebana,” she added.

Firing up oil and gas

October 19, 2012

Dateline 2012-09-24:

COMING from Sarawak and as a former Shell employee, I know very well how important the oil and gas (O&G) industry is not just to Sarawak but the whole of Malaysia. But we have to move beyond being largely upstream producers to increase value at every link in the entire chain.

Many of our numerous O&G projects aim just to do that to bring about higher income, greater value-added, employment opportunities and multiplier effects through the economy which will help everyone. We have the raw material and the land to give us tremendous competitive advantage.

October 17, 2012

This is a shout out for IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division will be organizing a Two-Day Course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures by Coating Technology & Cathodic Protection on the 8th and 9th November, 2012 (Thursday & Friday) at Wisma IEM, PJ. The session is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (registration at 8.30 a.m.) and end around 5 p.m. Participant will be granted 8 CPD/ PDP hours at the end of the course.

Corrosion has been a concern in many industries. Corrosion can cause unexpected failures of structures and can result in huge losses in life, production as well as environmental. It has been reported that corrosion can, on average, causing around 3% of GNP in many industrialized countries. Coating and Cathodic protection are two of few most effective corrosion protection methods available in the industry nowadays. It has been successfully used to overcome corrosion and extension of service life of structures.

The course is divided into three main parts. The first part deals with the fundamental of corrosion and its type, the second part will focus on the corrosion control by coating technology while the third part focus on cathodic protection.

The course will introduce you to the following topics:

  • Fundamental of Corrosion
  • Type of Corrosion and Its Recognition
  • Type of Corrosion Control Methods
  • Introduction to Corrosion Control by Coating
  • Paint Components and Types of Binders, Pigments, Fillers and their Functions

Are Malaysian salaries enough to draw our talent back?

October 17, 2012

We had an interesting conversation lately about the TalentCorp process being subject to abuse. Course, this is because I am outside the circle. If I were inside, I would have defended their right to reward talent as I, sorry they, see fit, as long as the money holds out.

FOR Daniel Chew, Brisbane – a city of modern skyscrapers but known for its laidback lifestyle has been “home” for the last 10 years.

Even before graduating with a degree in Commerce from the University of Queensland, Chew, 29, remembers having secured a job offer. The fact that his qualifications entitled him for permanent residence in Australia only made his decision to stay on so much easier.

His career path was set out in 2005, with him joining KPMG as an auditor, and later moving on to its corporate finance division where he specialised in business valuations. His years in professional practice also saw him qualify as a chartered accountant.

Shout Out – Talk on Corrosion in The Oil and Gas Industry

October 16, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 6th November, 2012. It’ll be at 5:30 pm  (makan-makan at 5:00). There’s an elevator at Wisma IEM, so no excuses.

The Oil and Gas Industry has a huge range of activities from exploration, extraction and production, processing and manufacturing of hydrocarbons.

The potential for corrosion to occur exists at all these stages as long as metallic materials are used. Corrosion if left unchecked can lead to disastrous failures that can cause huge impact to loss of production, damage to facilities and environment, and safety of personnel and the public. The key issues relating to HSSE, Cost, Integrity and Quality for an effective and successful prevention of corrosion are discussed in this presentation.

At the end of this presentation, the attendees should be aware of different corrosion processes in the different areas of activities, how design decisions are made to control predicted corrosion, and the keys to corrosion management during operations and production.

Puan Hjh Maimunah Ismail joined Lloyds Register Technical Services on 1st October, 2012.  She is now holding the roles of Asset Integrity Manager and Lead Specialist and based at Tan & Tan building at Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

NGOs to meet PM over Kelantan oil royalty rights

October 16, 2012

Suspicious, really? Noooooo…

Dateline 2012-09-22:

A coalition of pressure groups plans to hand the prime minister a petition over the Kelantan oil royalty issue carrying 150,000 signatures on October 3, the news portal Harakahdaily reported yesterday.

Early last month, Putrajaya set up a panel to resolve the long-standing issue that is expected to be a major campaign point for the PAS-led Kelantan state government in the coming general election.

The Kelantan government had previously been suspicious about the Najib administration’s forming of the oil royalty panel so close to the polls and asked for it to finish the probe in three months instead of the earlier planned six months.

On October 3, a convoy lead by the coalition calling itself “Royalti” will converge at the Federal Court in Putrajaya to pledge their support for a fair distribution of oil royalty to Kelantan.
