Sabah lacks oil-gas sector skills: Don

June 28, 2016

And after all the effort to make Sabah a spin-off of Malaysia’s Oil & Gas Hub.

Dateline 2016-06-02, Daily Express:

Despite Sabah having abundant oil and gas (O&G) resources, there is a lack of skilled technical Sabahan manpower in the O&G industry.

This situation was highlighted by Professor Ir. Dr Rosalam Sarbatly (pic), the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in his presentation “Challenges and opportunities in developing the skill and talented human capital in oil and gas sector in Sabah” at the 5th Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition recently.

Dr Rosalam is also the executive director for UMS Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd (UOil).

“This is compounded by a lack of interest among many local students in science, technology engineering and mathematics, particularly from rural areas,” Dr Rosalam explained, pinning his hopes on rural area students, as more urban students tend to opt for prestigious professions like architecture, medicine, law, accountancy and others.

Sabah’s O&G industry needs 25,000 skilled workers: UMS

December 24, 2015

Dateline 2015-11-20, Daily Express:

Sabah’s oil and gas industry needs about 25,000 skilled workers at a high-end level right up to managerial level. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Faculty of Engineering Dean Prof. Dr Rosalam Sarbatly, who disclosed this, said there is a huge shortage of skilled manpower in the industry as several oil and gas projects in the State have to import such workers from overseas to cater to their manpower needs.

“The percentage of locals with those high-end skills for the oil and gas industry in Sabah is very small whereby we are lacking local manpower in high-tech skills such as those concerning seismic and underwater tasks.

“However, about 70 per cent of locals are in the low-end technical skills like blasting, painting and coating.

“That is why UMS came into the picture and is collaborating with certain bodies that issue internationally recognised certifications so as to address the shortage in high-tech skills,” he said.

World class training facility to be built at UMS

Dateline 2015-07-15, Borneo Post:

A world class training and competence assurance facility will be set up at the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) campus to train manpower for the oil and gas industry.

The multi-million dollar facility will include a Safe Live Process Plant (SLPP), a realistic industrial oil and gas facility that will provide a safe and controlled environment for new and experienced trainees to develop practical skills and enhance competency.

Construction of the proejct will begin as soon the feasibility study conducted since April 2015 is completed (currently entering its final stages). It is expected to take nine months to complete, and its first intake of trainees is expected in the last quarter of 2015.

This was disclosed when a high-powered delegation from UMS led by Professor Ir Dr Rosalam Hj Sarbatly paid a courtesy call on Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan recently.

First batch of Master of Engineering (Oil and Gas) grads receive scrolls

Remember Doctor Who? Doctor, Master? Go watch it, it is not your grandfather’s Doctor.

Dateline 2014-10-23, Daily Express:

The first batch of Master of Engineering (Oil and Gas) graduates received their scrolls during the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 16th Convocation Ceremony held at its Chancellor Hall, here, Saturday.

One of the graduates, Chung Chen Chong, 63, said by having a Master’s Degree in the field, he hoped to contribute to the Government’s vision in getting more than 20,000 individuals involved in the oil and gas sector in the future.

During an interview, Chung took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all those who had supported him throughout the course of his studies.

“I would like to thank my superior, family members, especially my wife, professors especially my course director, Professor Pogaku Ravindra, and classmate, Mooganamoorthy Ganesan, who had supported and helped me throughout my studies.

“My wife, throughout my studies, had been very understanding as I was seldom at home and often spent my time doing revisions and assignments,” he said.

Chung, who is currently working but decided to take a full time master’s programme, said he had also divided his time well between attending classes and working.

UMS mulls oil and gas school

November 14, 2012

Oh, come on. It’s difficult enough to get good quality graduates of the classical engineering disciplines. Now you want to limit them to a trade? What will the BEM say?

Dateline 2012-10-14:

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will consider a suggestion by Labuan Corporation to set up a faculty of oil and gas and shipping at its Labuan Campus.

UMS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said this yesterday in response to the suggestion by Labuan Corporation deputy chief executive officer, Amir Onn Mustpha during the UMS-KAL Town Gown Program here yesterday.

“Oil and gas is an important field of studies and we will look into this matter including the facilities before we can open up the faculty at UMS, Labuan International Campus (UMS-KAL),” he said.

Amir earlier told the media that if UMS-KAL could start the oil and gas school here, students could go for their training and practical at several oil and gas companies here.

“These students can get a job in oil and gas sector here right after they finish their studies later.

“LC is also ready to help UMS-KAL in terms of facilities including land to help the campus to set up the school here,” he said.

Sabah varsity to set up petroleum faculty

Been there. And what’s this ‘soon become a rich state’? I thought it already was.

Dateline 2012-05-02:

A petroleum engineering faculty will be set up soon in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it was about time that UMS established a new faculty focusing on oil and gas as Sabah would soon become a rich state because of its natural resources.

With the setting up of the petroleum engineering faculty, Dr Mahathir was confident that Sabah would benefit from its oil resources.
