Are they saying the PETRONAS does kakistocracy?
Dateline 2016-08-11, Borneo Post:
Suarah Petroleum Group (SPG) said national oil corporation Petronas had forgotten its role and Sarawak’s sacrifice in making it a Fortune 500 company while its employment records contrasted sharply with its claims of meritocracy.
Speaking on behalf of SPG, its media communications officer Yusuf Abdul Rahman said Petronas’ claims that it’s latest manpower restructuring exercise was based on merit were off the mark and that there were plenty of qualified Sarawakians around.
He said Petronas owed a big chunk of its success to Sarawak; since its inception to a multi-national corporation listed in Fortune 500.
“Sarawakians are not asking or begging for jobs which they don’t deserve. All Sarawakians want is a fair chance. If that is denied to them because of pro-West Malaysian Petronas bias, then it has to answer to the state,” he said.
He accused Petronas in its quest to become a multi-national corporation of having forgotten its role as a national oil company and that citing meritocracy was only an excuse.

I presume ‘foreigners’ means non-Sabahans?
Dateline 2016-08-09, The Malay Mail:
National oil giant Petronas is not giving priority to foreigners over Sabahans as claimed, as the firm had already been asked from the very beginning to consider the state residents first for jobs, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman has said.
Musa said he had requested that Petronas fill up high-ranking positions in the company with Sabahans first, but noted that Sabah itself lack workers who have the skills required for the oil and gas industry.
“This includes to fill in the job vacancies and in fact many local youths are employed there in the two projects. I have also asked Petronas to also give priority to Sabahans for high level posts, not only rank and file.
“But I admit that we lack skilled workers in this sector and in view of this I have asked that our youths be given training so that they can obtain a degree and be employed to fill in these vacancies,” he was quoted saying at the state legislative assembly by local daily The Borneo Post’s portal.

Tg. Baram acreage may be returned?
Dateline 2016-08-08, Rigzone:
Malaysia’s upstream oil and gas services company Uzma Berhad, holder of a minority stake in the Tanjung Baram oil field in Block SK307 offshore Sarawak, is unfazed by talks that the risk service contract (RSC) for the acreage might be cancelled amid cost rationalization initiative undertaken by the country’s national oil firm Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), local media The Star reported Saturday.
Such views were triggered recently after PETRONAS reached an agreement last month with the joint venture comprising Petrofac Energy Developments Sdn Bhd and SapuraKencana Petroleum Berhad’s subsidiaries for the cessation of the Berantai RSC located in Block PM309 offshore Terengganu, Malaysia.
“The RSC’s cessation will allow PETRONAS to minimize the project’s long-term value erosion and optimize the development and production activities in Malaysia, in line with its efforts to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of its operations,” the Malaysian state-owned firm said in the July 11 press release.

Dateline 2016-08-05, FMT:
PKR lawmaker Rafizi Ramli believes introducing quotas for Sarawakians in Petronas’ operations in Sarawak will do them more harm than good.
Referring to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s suggestion yesterday that Petronas have a 70 per cent quota of home-grown management and middle management staff in the state’s operations, Rafizi said he understood the sentiments of Sarawakians, but imposing such quotas could be detrimental to the staff.
“All Petronas executives are taken from the company’s headquarters and reassigned to the various units and subsidiaries around the world, as the oil company’s operations covered upstream, gas, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), oil refineries, petrochemicals, and downstream activities, such as marketing and international trade.

Same topic as yesterday, a different slant on reporting, and an optimistic note.
Dateline 2016-07-22, Nikkei Asia Review:
Malaysia’s national oil company Petroliam Nasional, or Petronas, has awarded its first production sharing contract for 2016 to three oil companies to explore a hydrocarbon block off the Sarawak state.
Thailand’s PTT Exploration & Production will operate the SK410B oil field with joint venture partner Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company, Petronas said in a statement. PTT and the state-run KUFPEC will each hold a 42.5% stake in the block while Petronas will own the remainder 15% through a wholly owned unit.
“[The] signing not only marks Petronas’ first PSC award in 2016, but also welcomes PTT for their first operatorship in Malaysia,” said Petronas’ executive vice president for upstream Mohd Anuar Taib. “We are also pleased to collaborate with our long term partners, KUFPEC once again.”

Again, this is old news for those who are in the business. I didn’t even know there was a bidding exercise, if not I would have put in a bid.
Dateline 2016-07-21, Rigzone:
Malaysia’s national oil company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) appointed Wednesday its wholly-owned subsidiary Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd as operator of the Berantai field in Block PM 309, located about 93 miles (150 kilometers) offshore Terangganu, Malaysia, following the cessation of the Berantai Risk Service Contract (RSC) with the previous contractors announced July 11.
“The appointment of Vestigo is in line with PETRONAS’ effort to extend the economic life of the field and maximize the long term value of the asset,” the company said in a press release.
Vestigo specializes in the development and production of small and marginal fields and currently operates the Tembikai field under the Tembikai-Chenang Cluster Small Field RSC since June 2015.
The Bertantai field comprises a wellhead platform connected to a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which processes and exports gas to the neighboring Angsi field via a 18.6 mile (30 kilometer) subsea pipeline before being exported onshore. First gas from Berantai commenced in October 2012.

Who pulled whose plug? And notice that Petrofac’s share prices went up.
Dateline 2016-07-11, City AM (who?)
Petrofac shares popped today after the oilfield services provider scrapped a contract with Malaysia’s state-owned oil firm.
Petrofac’s Malaysian subsidiary and its partners agreed an early stoppage to the development of the the Berantai gas field, located about 150km offshore Peninsular Malaysia, with Petronas.
Petronas was due to pay Petrofac $357m (£275.4m) for the contract last year, which resulted in a profit of just $1m during this period.
The London-listed firm had the right to end it ahead of the expected end date in 2020, depending on the project’s economics.
