Malaysia’s proposed nuclear power plant is not yet a done deal, said the government’s leading body on atomic power, as public opposition towards the idea sparks up again ahead of the 11th Malaysia Plan (MP) to be tabled this week.

The Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation (MNPC) said it was currently focused on first building the legal framework for a nuclear power programme before it started looking for possible sites for a plant.

Dateline 2015-04-13, Sputnik International:

Russia is ready to enter a bid for construction of the first nuclear power plant in Malaysia, if it is announced, Russia’s nuclear corporation Rosatom Deputy Director Kirill Komarov said Monday.

Komarov said that Russia is ready to participate in the tender despite the fact that Moscow and Kuala Lumpur do not yet have a nuclear energy agreement.

Moscow can offer cooperation in building nuclear reactors to countries which have plans of nuclear energy development, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, Komarov said. Russian reactors meet all recent upgraded nuclear safety requirements introduced following the 2011 catastrophe at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
