Visiting Miri

March 18, 2009

I was in Miri yesterday on a marketing trip. Second time I’ve been there, and first time I’ve gone round in daylight. Seems like a nice town, which fits its title as ‘the resort city of Miri.’

Maybe next time I down there, I’ll bring along my scuba gear as well, combining business with pleasure. BTW, anyone know of any reliable dive shops?

If you look at the sunset picture, the dot you see on the horizon is a platform, a central processing platform (CPP) by the looks of it. I believe it belongs to the Baram collection.

  • Tourist: wow, an oil rig!
  • Engineer: wow, a jackup rig!
  • Business Development Manager: wow, who can I see and sell something to?

Mea culpa.

Oil Production – Gentle Indonesian Way

June 11, 2008

I received this presentation file. At first glance, I thought it was a hoax, putting down the level of Indonesian HSE while carrying out sophisticated oil production operations.

Turns out I was looking at it the wrong way. This is an example of creative thinking, increasing net income without increasing the normal risk Indonesians are exposed to. Now, if we could do the same thing to those dead wells in Miri. Malaysia. Heck, anyone want to join me and see if the Grand Old Lady of Miri has some spunk left in her?

Update: Divers missing in Miri

March 2, 2008

As reported in Malaysia’s Sunday Star, two professional divers have been missing since Friday. The divers went missing 5 nautical miles offshore Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia while attempting to repair crude oil tanker Bunga Kelana 6.

The Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) ship suffered contact damage in a collision with a Chinese-registered vessel, Tai Po, on December 30, 2007.
