The SOGE Story – Visiting Clients

June 12, 2009

As I travel round visiting potential and ongoing clients, I am heartened to see that some of them give back something to the Malaysian engineering community. Here’s a sign I found in Kerteh, Terengganu.

Thank you, MECIP in supporting the IEM. If you would like to continue supporting SOGE, even better.

IEM Shout Out – Strategic Management Thinking Process

June 10, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 11th June. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

The talk is aimed to introduce to the participants the logical “thinking tools” that they can use in standalone situations or together as a coherent problem solving effort on the real life issues. They will generate effective and impactful actions that can put the organization in its path to successful strategic planning.

Sounds right up my path, I’m into tactical planning at the moment.

His (En. Mohd Fuad Ahmad) career spans over 19 years in banking and manufacturing industry where he has held positions as Business Improvement (UK) , Director of Assembly Operations and Human Resources, Theory of Constraints (TOC) Jonah Licensee and Staff Statistician, Involved in achievement of TQM and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) awards, ISO 9001, ISO 18000, ISO 14001 Certifications. To date he is the Principal Consultant, AD Success Consulting.

Something a bit different from line lists and NPSH calcs, eh?

IEM Shout Out – Flow Assurance

May 21, 2009

Disclaimer: the speaker is from Synergy.

Back to business. This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 22nd May. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

Oil and gas operations require assurance that a given product moves from one point to another. This assurance may require knowing for example, the backpressure caused by a transportation pipeline onto well production facilities, the amount of liquid and gases caused by the interplay of two phase flow in a pipe, the buildup of wax deposits that can constrict flow.

Abnormal situations are looked at as well, for example restarting a pipeline that has been stopped, blowing down a pipeline from high alarm limits, and pigging a line at various speeds. Flow assurance is the art of manipulating tools and providing an interpretation as to whether the given process and physical conditions may be cause and concern. An experienced flow specialist is able to analyze the system, and provide solutions to minimize the effects of unwanted flow artifacts. These solutions can be provided on a design as well as operational level.

Ir. Kevin Shanta has 14 years of experience in process design, simulation modeling (both steady state and dynamic) and plant operations. Upon graduating in 1994 he worked in the oleochemical industry managing the production of fatty acids He then moved to the oil and gas industry where he was involved in dynamic simulation of offshore topsides. He proceeded to broaden his skills by working the several design companies in Malaysia before moving to Perth to perform flow assurance for a subsea development.

Currently, he is the Technical Director for Synergy Oil and Gas Engineering, part of a multinational engineering company overseeing the Malaysia engineering operations.

IEM Shout Out – Managing Information

April 28, 2009

Okay,  I survived the talk I gave last week, though I’m not sure the audience did. My apologies for a bit of rambling. Contact me, and I’ll give you a private taste.

Back to business. This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 28th April. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

Business decisions requires information to be at your finger tips. Many giant companies globally have started to implement Real-Time Information Management Systems to facilitate decision making. PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) has pioneered the development and implementation of its own information management system known as PCIM to manage Life Cycle Data and Documents based on Neutral Data Format.  This facilitates in
realizing Integrated Operation or Smart Field which will enable instant business decisions. Part of PCSB Neutral Data Format and Data Model has been adopted as International Standard (ISO 15926 : Integration of Life Cycle Data for Process Plants including Oil and Gas Production Facilities) to support “interoperability” which is important elements of Information Management System.

Lots of words. Further elaboration will be provided by En. Wan Hassan Wan Mamat:

He serves in the Board of Directors of POSC-CAESAR Association, Norway as Co-Chairman, championing Integrated Operations and Standardization. He drives the implementation of life-cycle information management with software integrations and interoperability for PETRONAS based on ISO15926 towards realizing “Integrated Operations of SMART Field”.
He is also Advisor to Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council on Information Management and Deployment of ISO15926 for the Malaysian Oil and Gas Industry.

IEM Shout Out – Wata’s Talk at the IEM

April 18, 2009

Here’s some self promotion. This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 23rd April. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at the IEM , Bangunan Ingenieur, PJ.:

This presentation will provide a quick introduction into the engineering of oil production. It will start with an introduction to important oil properties to consider when producing an oilfield, and how this data is used. It then moves to a generic offshore production facility, pointing out the salient points, design considerations and major equipment used in oil production. It closes out with a quick look at downstream facilities.

For my background, you can hunt around somewhere on this site.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on ‘Malaysia Oil & Gas Deepwater Development – The Experience Thus Far’

March 14, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 19th March as titled above. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at the IEM , Bangunan Ingenieur, PJ.

My friend, Ahmad Sedek will be giving the presentation. The synopsis is:

It is anticipated that there will be less commercially viable oil & gas fields in the Malaysian shallow water. As such, there is an equal push towards developing fields in the deep (200-1000m water depth) and ultra-deep (more than 1000m water depth) water. In line with this shift, PETRONAS has set the tone by stating its ambition to make Malaysia as the regional deepwater hub and, along with its Production Sharing Contractors, has set the ball rolling by the successful oil production from Kikeh Deepwater Development. The presentation intends to share presentor’s general experience in the deepwater projects, which covers background, introduction to technologies, challenges/opportunities, and Kikeh development examples.

Come all, and get your 2 CPD hours.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Wireline Logging in E&P activities

January 28, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My technical division will be having a talk tomorrow entitled ‘Wireline Logging in E&P activities’. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at the IEM , Bangunan Ingenieur, PJ.

My friend, Shafie Jumaat will be giving the presentation. The synopsis of the presentation is:

Electric wireline logging or commonly called logging in the E&P business, is one of the many services required by the oil companies. It is required throughout the cycle of an oil well, from exploration to development, to brownfield and finally to abandonment. It involves conveying a device required for a specific task on a cable that also acts as electrical and communication conduit between the surface and the device that are being sent downhole an oilwell. In general, a logging job can be for the purpose of evaluating the oil well or for enhancing the production of the well itself. In evaluating the oil well, various types of data can be acquired using the many types of devices that have been developed in the 80 years history of this service. Enhancing production of a well may involve mechanical services or the use of explosives in a producing well.

Come all, and get your 2 CPD hours.
