Ah, an article discussing my most favorite Grand Lady, dateline 2010-08-08:

The discovery of oil at Canada Hill in 1910 not only opened up various opportunities but transformed the place from a small fishing village to a booming city.

It has also brought transformation in the mindset and perspective of the people on certain aspects especially their future, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said at the launching of Grand Old Lady Centenary Celebrations at Canada Hill yesterday.

From The Star – Sarawak’s Canada Hill on Fire

April 2, 2010

Man,the Grand Old Lady of Miri had a close call. I suggest you take photos of her and the museum before something untold happens.

Taken from the Star, Dateline 2010-03-28:

MIRI: Fire swept through Canada Hill here and nearly razed the Miri Oil Museum where the “Grand Old Lady,” Malaysia’s first inland oil well, is located.

The fire started about 6.30pm on Friday and by 7pm, the whole slope was ablaze.

It would have reached the museum if not for a concrete footpath bordering the museum and the slope.

The entire hill was enveloped in thick choking smoke and the city skyline was almost blotted out of view.

Oil Production – Gentle Indonesian Way

June 11, 2008

I received this presentation file. At first glance, I thought it was a hoax, putting down the level of Indonesian HSE while carrying out sophisticated oil production operations.

Turns out I was looking at it the wrong way. This is an example of creative thinking, increasing net income without increasing the normal risk Indonesians are exposed to. Now, if we could do the same thing to those dead wells in Miri. Malaysia. Heck, anyone want to join me and see if the Grand Old Lady of Miri has some spunk left in her?
