Petrolian Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has a strong presence in Sarawak, with total cumulative investment of over RM300 billion in the upstream, midstream and downstream projects and activities, said LNG Group of Companies vice-president and chief executive officer (CEO) Dzafri Sham Ahmad.
He said for upstream, there were 60 oil and gas producing fields – 26 oil and 34 gas – producing an average of 850 kilo barrel oil equivalent per day (kboe/d).
“Additionally there are another 206 discovered fields which are yet to be monetised,” he said at the Petronas Media Nite 2015 in Kuching last night.
He said for midstream there were three facilities – Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu; Petronas Train 9 project; and, the floating LNG facility.
For downstream, he said, there were currently two operating units in the state — Asean Bintulu Fertiliser plant which produced 0.6 million tonnes per annum (MPTA) of urea, making it Asia’s largest granular urea plant and 0.4 MTPA of ammonia.

Since then, Shell’s upstream business has grown from strength to strength: from Sarawak to Sabah and back down to Bintulu, where a natural gas liquefaction venture was formed,
The abundance of gas also prompted the establishment of the world’s first commercial middle distillate synthesis – the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis plant – in Bintulu in 1993. As the first commercial Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant of its type, this allows Shell to sell ultra clean GTL products to the world.
From there, Shell eventually ventured into the deepwater industry offshore Sarawak.

The abundance of natural resources in Bintulu gives the area a huge potential to be the petro-chemical hub in the country, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of Huchems Fine Chemical Corporation plant in Tanjung Kidurong yesterday, Adenan said the setting up of the plant to produce ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate here reflected the confidence of foreign investors in the state.
He added that more petrochemical companies would be invited to set up their plants in the state.
“To do this, we will be intensely involved in developing the high value downstream products of oil and gas industries such as specialised and fine chemicals.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic) has assured Sabah that it would continue to get more revenue from its oil and gas resources.
The prime minister said apart from the oil and gas royalty of five per cent, Sabah was also given a 10% stake in Petronas LNG Train 9 Sdn Bhd in Bintulu, Sarawak, which would generate an additional revenue to the state and its people.
“That is why I had said, you can make a request, but let us negotiate and we have a formula that Sabah would receive more from the oil and gas revenue. This has been clarified by chief minister Datuk Musa Aman,” he said when opening the Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) Convention in Kota Kinabalu, today.

Sabah has made the right decision by acquiring a 10 per cent stake in Liquefied Natural Gas Sdn Bhd 9 (LNG 9) in Bintulu, Sarawak as it will boost its coffers for development, Chief Minister Musa Aman said.
Thanking Prime Minister Najib Razak and Petronas for making the offer, Musa said this proved the federal government had Sabah’s best interests at heart.
“Proceeds from the equity will increase our coffers and can be used to develop the state,” he told reporters when opening the Ranau Umno division meeting here today.

A Sikorsky S-76 helicopter with two flight crew together with six passengers were forced to land their aircraft 92 nautical miles off coast Bintulu.
In the 7.42am incident, the helicopter and its passengers who are oil and gas workers, were carrying out offshore oil well survey in the area when they were hit by sudden weather change.Police said the passengers were from France, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Canada.
Bintulu Police Chief Superintendent Madang Usat confirmed the incident and said the crew and passengers are safe.
“After the emergency landing, they were picked up by a vessel nearby who took them to shore,” said Madang.

The technology company The Linde Group has received an order for a mid-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant from Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd., a production subsidiary of Malaysia’s national oil and gas company PETRONAS. The new boil-off gas re-liquefaction facility has a maximum design capacity of 1,840 tons of LNG per day and will be located in the Bintulu LNG complex in Sarawak, East Malaysia.
Professor Dr Aldo Belloni, member of the Executive Board of Linde AG, said: “This is the latest in a series of mid-scale LNG projects for Linde with particularly demanding technical features. We came off as winners in a highly competitive bidding process, reaffirming our design and engineering expertise and cost competitiveness in the growing natural gas liquefaction market.”

Fluor Corporation announced today following a formal signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that it was awarded a contract by PETRONAS Gas Berhad, a subsidiary of PETRONAS, to provide front-end engineering and design (FEED) services for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Malaysia. The new terminal will supply gas to an adjacent 300-megawatt combined cycle power plant in the town of Lahad Datu, Sabah. Fluor booked the undisclosed contract value in the first quarter of 2012.

Bintulu has chalked up the distinction of having the fastest growth rate in Sarawak due to its oil and gas activities.
According to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the oil and gas industry is the biggest contributor to Bintulu’s success, with its gross domestic product (GDP) growth as proof.
“While the country recorded a GDP growth of four per cent from 1995-2000, Sarawak’s average was at five-six per cent and Bintulu topped the charts at a whopping seven per cent increase,” said BDA General Manager, Datuk Mohidin Ishak.

The RM4.6 billion Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline project linking Kimanis in Sabah and Bintulu in Sarawak, expected to be completed by the end of 2013, will be as successful as the North-South Expressway (PLUS) linking the Peninsular Malaysia states, said a Universiti Putra Malaysia academic.
Faculty of Human Ecology deputy dean Prof Dr Jayum Jawan said the 512km pipeline, which will transport gas from the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal in Kimanis to customers in Sabah and Petronas’ LNG complex in Bintulu, is the best example of a national project that could bring the people and business communities of Sabah and Sarawak closer to Peninsular Malaysia.
