I propose Mr. Woodpecker as the mascot for FJM. Vote for him in the upcoming EGM.
From MSN – Malaysia has no intentions of reviewing fuel subsidy
March 30, 2011Dateline 2011-03-21:
The Government of Malaysia has no intention to review the fuel subsidy as it can still withstand the increase in oil prices, which have shot up since the unrest in the Middle East began.
Second Finance Minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the country would still be able to cope if oil prices went up to US$130 per barrel.
“However, the country’s economy will suffer if the price reaches US$150 per barrel.
“Our target is to achieve an economic growth of 5% to 6% this year and this will be affected if oil prices reach this stage.

From The Star – Why government should stop subsidy petrol
March 29, 2011Ah, if only we had the political will to follow up… though some of the engineering logic stated below leaves a lot to be desired.
Dateline 2011-03-01:
Reason No.1
Malaysia has abundant gas reserves, now standing at 2.35 trillion cu m versus oil reserves of 2.9 billion bbl. In less than 10 years, our oil reserves are going to be depleted. We should tap the potential of natural gas, as it gives us cleaner fuel.Reason 2
The cost of converting the vehicle to run compressed natural gas (cng) and petrol is between RM3000-RM5000. Again there is a lot of cost saving in the long run as natural gas is less volatile compared to petrol. Again the government to provide incentives for the conversion cost.

March 27, 2011New player in the market? Get those CVs updated!
Dateline 2011-03-17:
Roc Oil Co, an explorer planning to sell assets in Africa and focus on Southeast Asia and China, wants to tap oil fields off Malaysia to increase production.
Roc intends to bid for rights to develop fields owned by Petroliam Nasional Bhd, Malaysia’s state energy company, Chief Executive Officer Alan Linn said in an interview in Sydney.
The company is interested in as many as five areas, depending on their size, and has joined with a Malaysian partner to pursue the permits, he said yesterday, declining to name the company.

From Bernama – Optimisation Important for Profitability in Oil & Gas
March 25, 2011Dateline 2011-03-16:
The employment of optimising techniques and technologies that are cost efficient to safeguard profitability is crucial in the oil and gas sector, in particular with regard to the risk service contract (RSC).
…
The RSC is essentially a contract that significantly increases an operator’s risks of exposure, said ARC Media Global Pte Ltd in a statement today, in conjunction with the Production Optimisation Week Asia in Kuala Lumpur from July 25-29.
In this case, the awardees or the consortium bears almost all the operating risks and is not paid in the event that the project or system fails, ARC Media Global explained.
The optimising of production becomes more pertinent with the RSC to develop the Berantai field as Petronas imposes strict key performance indicators on deliverability, production and costs, it pointed out.
Petronas awarded a RSC to a consortium comprising Kencana Petroleum Bhd, SapuraCrest Petroleum Bhd and foreign partner Petrofac.
From the Borneo Post – Viable energy source is natural gas – SAPP
March 24, 2011Dateline 2011-03-17:
Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) strongly believes that the Malaysian government would put off any immediate plan to build nuclear power plants in the country following the catastrophic nuclear explosions in tsunami-ravaged northeastern Japan.
“With so much negative publicity generated by the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami, it is highly unlikely that the Malaysian government will proceed with any final decision to build nuclear power plants in the foreseeable future,” said SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee yesterday.
He however cautioned that the people should be concerned about other nuclear plants which are dangerously near to Sabah should a nuclear accident happen.

From the Star – Growth affected if oil prices are too high
March 23, 2011Imagine how the article would read if it started “Malaysia, as an oil IMPORTING nation…”
Dateline 2011-10-01:
Malaysia, as an oil exporting nation, stands to benefit as oil prices rise up to a certain point where super high oil prices would be more of a drag on the overall economy, said economists.
With oil prices averaging US$90 to US$100 per barrel, oil subsidies by the Government could increase to some RM14bil from RM10.3bil last year. As of Wednesday, Nymex crude oil was trading around the US$104 band.
This subsidy amount of RM14bil is still lower than subsidies in 2008, which amounted to some RM17.6bil.

Shout Out – Talk on Managing Knowledge In Engineering Premised Organization
March 22, 2011This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be hosting a talk on the 25th March, 2011. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.
Knowledge Management (KM) has evolved to become a work functional discipline since the Nineties. It is about strategies and practices that an organization can gainfully use to identify, create, represent, distribute, and/or effect adoption of insights and experiences. These insights and experiences are actually knowledge that are both embodied within manning individuals and inherent within work processes of the organization.
Encik Agil Atan is a self-employed mechanical engineer who had retired after 32 years of service with PETRONAS. His past work experience include planning, designing, engineering, procurement, inspection, construction, pre-commissioning, post-commissioning audit, and engineering maintenance of chemical and process plants including those relating to mechanical installation, rotary equipment, and piping. He has held positions as executive mechanical engineer, project engineer, project manager, and general manager. En. Agil has wide knowledge of and work exposure in managing engineering-based information and had been the head of Knowledge Management at the PETRONAS Group Technology Solutions Division prior to retirement.
Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.
