The key to improving Sarawak’s socio-economic gap is to redefine the Pertroleum Act 1974.

More money for Sarawak is of course very attractive and indeed makes it sounds as if it’s the first solution to poverty woes.

However, it is pointless to lobby for more money if funds are siphoned away through the unknown channels of corruption

Fact is Sarawak and Sabah have paid more than their reasonable dues to the federal government.

(postponed) IEM Shout Out – 1 Day Seminar on The Application of Engineering Finance Methodology in Structuring A (Long-Term) Financially Sustainable Project

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting the above seminar on the 18th June, 2103.

The primary objectives of Engineering Finance are to Create Cost Conscious Global Professionals. Engineering Finance is a sub-set of Engineering using financial methodology to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of a project.

The course will delve on:

  • Definition and concept of Engineering Finance.
  • Fundamental principles of the engineering finance methodology e.g. “Bridging” of “Engineering” with “Finance”, MAL Cost Efficiency Model, Economic Efficiency vs. Engineering Efficiency, Critical Component Analysis etc.
  • Applications of Engineering Finance – using actual cases to illustrate the uses of EF methodology in market positioning, product-technology option matrix etc.

The seminar will be led by Ir. Prof. Madya Dr Maulud Abdul Latif. He obtained his Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Engineering Finance at the UTM/University of Warwick. He also holds an MBA Finance from the University of Queensland Business School, a B. Sc. (Hons) Mining Engineering from the University of Wales and a Diploma in Mechanical Eng. from Universiti Technologi Malaysia. In addition, he holds the Dredgemaster Certificate of Competency and is a member of the Board of Professional Engineers, Institute of Engineers and Institute of Mineral Engineers.

IEM Shout Out – Technical Visit To Gas Malaysia Berhad

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be visiting Gas Malaysia Berhad, No.5 Jalan Serendah 26/17, Shah Alam, Selangor on Tuesday 25th June, 2013.

Gas Malaysia is a natural gas distribution company in Malaysia. The company headquarters is located in Shah Alam. It has three regional offices, located in Prai, Gebeng and Pasir Gudang, and seven branch offices located throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

The company was incorporated on 16 May 1992 to construct and operate the natural gas distribution system within Peninsular Malaysia. In December 2000, Gas Malaysia expanded its business to include the reticulated liquefied petroleum gas.
As of July 2005, the company had 452 industrial customers, more than 600 commercial customers and over 3,000 residential customers.As of February 2011, Gas Malaysia had 33,707 residential and commercial customers as well as 691 industrial customers. In 2010, total gas sold by Gas Malaysia was 117.8 million British thermal unit throughout Peninsular Malaysia. As of February 2011, its network of gas pipelines covered a total of 1,726.6 kilometers (1,072.9 mi)

MyCEB Targets RM66.5 Million Economic Impact From OTC Asia 2014

From Bernama, dateline 2103-05-20:

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) is targeting an economic impact of RM66.5 million from the Offshore Technology Conference OTC Asia 2014.

The conference, from March 25-28, 2014, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here, is also expected to welcome 6,600 international delegates to Malaysia, MyCEB said in a statement Monday.

Its Chief Executive Officer Zulkefli Sharif said Asia is increasingly gaining the attention of global players for business events, and Malaysia in particular, is highly regarded as an important port of call for international meetings.

He said the oil and gas sector accounts for around one-fifth of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is included in the country’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) outline.

Gas subsidy price delay could pose supply issue

The delay in the government’s proposed rationalisation of its subsidy for gas is also holding back implementation of crucial initiatives that could jeopardise supply security.

Distributor Petronas Gas Bhd (Pet- Gas) chairman Datuk Anuar Ahmad said one of these crucial initiatives that is being held back by the rationalisation delay is the Petronas Third Party Access (TPA) system.

The TPA, which is to provide security of gas supply to Malaysia, is designed to function with third parties coming into the supply market and importing their gas through PetGas’ transportation service.

A Sabah state legislative assembly representative has called for greater  transparency, accountability and creditability in the shadowy world of the nation’s oil wealth that is now only privy to the Prime Minister.

Luyang representative Hiew King Cheu said the need to amend the Petroleum Development Act 1974 is in line with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s declared intentions of creating a more responsible government.
