Malaysia’s oil and gas services looking farther afield

Companies servicing Malaysia’s oil and gas sector are using the experience and expertise gained during collaborative ventures with foreign firms as a launchpad for overseas expansion.

Four decades of developing solutions for Malaysia’s operational environment, under the state-owned hydrocarbons producer, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), have put local outfits on a solid footing to enter the rapidly expanding global oil services industry.

However, the fast pace of growth has also produced challenges for firms embarking on international expansion, including project delays and equipment shortages, which are taking their toll on margins.

Production on the rise

At home, Malaysia’s oil sector services providers have benefited from Petronas’s efforts to galvanise production in recent years, spearheaded by a US$30 billion investment aimed at ramping up output, developing new offshore reserves and extending the production life of existing fields.

IEM Shout Out – One Day Course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures (postponed)

This is a shout out for IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division will be organizing a one day course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures on the 9th December, 2013 (Monday) at Wisma IEM, PJ. The session is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (registration at 8.30 a.m.) and end around 5 p.m. Participant will be granted 3.5 CPD/ PDP hours at the end of the course.

Corrosion has been a concern in many industries. Corrosion can cause unexpected failures of structures and can result in huge losses in life, production as well as environmental. It has been reported that corrosion can, on average, causing around 3% of GNP in many industrialized countries.

Cathodic protection (CP) is one of few most widely applied corrosion protection methods. It has been successfully used to overcome corrosion and extension of service life of structures. The course is aimed to provide the understanding of principle of CP, techniques of CP survey and measurements and interpretation of CP survey data.

The course will introduce you to the following topics:

  • Principle of Cathodic Protection
  • Type of Cathodic Protection
  • Criteria of Cathodic Protection
  • Electrical Measurement for Cathodic Protection System
  • Special Cathodic Protection Survey Techniques

Mr. Kang Kim Ang, MSc. Corrosion (UMIST. U.K.), Dip. Materials Engineering (TARC), C.Eng., FIMM, Micorr, a Chartered Engineer registered with Engineering Council, UK and the Corrosion Specialist and Cathodic Protection Specialist accredited by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM).

Mr. Kang has over 25 years of experience in corrosion control, Cathodic Protection, heavy‐duty coatings, passive fire protection, and corrosion inspection in the oil & gas, marine, petrochemical, construction and industrial sectors in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philipines, Vietnam, Myanmar and some Middle East countries. He is currently the managing director of CORRTROL Group of companies, the local leading companies which specialized in EPCC, consultancy, R&D and various services in the field of corrosion protection for oil and gas projects.

Engr. Ong Wei Rex, M.Eng. Mechanical (UTM), B.Eng. Mechanical (Material) Engineering (UTM), Cathodic Protection Specialist by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and CP Technologist Level 2 accredited by Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM). Eng Ong is a Graduate Member of IEM. He is also an active committee member of the Chemical Engineering Technical Division.

Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), situated in Kuantan, Pahang is a state-of-the-art Rare Earths processing plant that process Rare Earths sourced from Mount Weld in Western Australia, the richest known deposit of Rare Earths in the world. The visit aims to enlighten participants of the properties of Rare Earths, their use and the daily operational aspects of LAMP.

Untuk sarapan tengah hari selalunya kami pergi ke warung mamak di belakang untuk makan mi goreng. Di sebelah Panggung Cathay terdapat warung rojak kegemaran kami. Kumpulan kami sangat akrab.

Petronas Sees 14 Fields Under EOR Scheme Producing Up to 1B Barrels of Oil

Malaysia’s state-owned oil company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) expected production from 14 oil fields identified under the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) initiative to reach between 750 million and one billion barrels of oil for the duration of the fields’ economic life, subject to the condition of the fields and when these projects start up, local newspaper The Star reported Thursday.

The Tapis field is the first to be selected for the EOR scheme, under which Petronas seeks to reverse dwindling oil reserves in Malaysia. Five of these fields lie offshore Sabah and Sarawak, including Baram in Sarawak and St Joseph in Sabah, while the others are located offshore Peninsular Malaysia, including Tapis and Dulang fields.

Petronas CEO Shamsul Azhar Abbas said recently that production decline at its Malaysian oil fields has been kept to a minimum, at around 2 and 3 percent which helped the firm to maintain crude production at around 480,000 barrels per day, compared to 8 and 9 percent internationally, The Star reported.

Mokhzani to take over PetOne?

Tycoon Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir may take over Petrol One Resources Bhd (PetOne), bankers familiar with the matter said on Monday.

PetOne, Malaysia’s first publicly-traded oil and gas storage provider, has seen its shares suspended from trading since May 22. Bursa Malaysia suspended the stock after the company technically defaulted on some loans.

Business Times understands that Mokhzani’s right-hand man, Yeow Kheng Chew, is leading the talks to take over PetOne.

Mokhzani, which according to Forbes magazine is Malaysia’s 15th richest man with a US$980 million (RM3.2 billion) fortune, is said to be interested in PetOne for its listing status.

Petronas’ EOR project in Tapis to boost oil production

Petroliam Nasional Bhd expects Malaysia’s first large scale enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project to boost oil production at the Tapis oilfield offshore peninsular Malaysia by up to 35,000 barrels per day from between 3,000 and 4,000 barrels currently.

Head of EOR programme, exploration and production technology division Dr Nasir Darman said using the water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection measure, the depleting Tapis oilfield will be injected with gases from nearby Guntong oilfield to increase pressure and enhance oil production.

Production, he added, is expected to start in the first half of next year. “At peak, the project is expected to produce between 25,000 and 35,000 barrels per day of oil in 2016 and 2017,” he told reporters in a briefing at the Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Bhd (MMHE) fabrication yard here on Tuesday.
