Why Oil and Gas in the South China Sea Won’t Be Developed

October 2, 2014

Link bait. And interesting.

Dateline 2014-07-18:

On July 16, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) decided to remove its oil rig from contested waters, stating that its exploration mission was completed after finding “sings of oil and gas.”

While moving the rig out of waters claimed by both China and Vietnam could cool tensions, the intractable dispute over territory is holding back what could be massive investment in oil and gas exploration.

The Wall Street Journal reported on several major international oil companies that are steering clear of the South China Sea because of the conflict, despite the potentially huge reserves of oil and gas in its waters.

MOSGEC 2014 – Welcoming Speech Transcript

September 29, 2014

To the young reporter I coshed over the head to get this transcript, my apologies. The dent will disappear, I promise.

Among the linkbait in this transcript:

The oil, gas and energy sector has long been a pillar of our country’s economy, contributing about 30% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and approximately 40 percent of the country’s revenue. It has been identified as one of the key thrusts in Malaysia’s journey to transform Malaysia into a high-income nation, under the Prime Minister’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

At present, Malaysia (as at 01 January 2013) has approximately 22.2 billion barrels oil equivalent of oil and gas reserves. We are also the third largest gas reserves holder in the Asia Pacific Region (behind China and Indonesia) and ranked 15 among the world’s holder of the natural gas reserves.

The first application of EOR technology is now being implemented at the Tapis oil field, offshore Terengganu. (Wasn’t this supposed to be Angsi?)

To make some money, I have published the transcript here or here. Please buy a copy, so that I can afford to polish my Volvo 244 once every quarter.

Saturday Star 2014-09-27 – Job Opportunities

September 29, 2014

Talbiyah (from 123muslim.com)

Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Or get the Young Turks series (all 4 books). Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me. I need RM360 to get The Star ePaper. Or go to Hajj, whichever you prefer.

  • I’m lining up jobs for next quarter, for IGL Services. Whisper to (better yet, carpe jugulum) your boss, and send work my way.
  • Nothing in the papers this week. With all the layoffs I heard, that is no surprise. Can I buy a lead process engineer for RM40/hr?

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

Food choice of the week? How if you visit Vietnam, how about visiting and updating GoHalalVietnam! for your food needs. For your other needs, talk to your local tour guide/ concierge / man on the street.

Need some new management techniques. How about these books?

MOGEC Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

September 28, 2014

MOGEC will be hosting a 1 day course (our first in my memory) on the 28th October, 2014. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Saloma Bistro. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

September 28, 2014

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 20th November, 2014. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates. And it’s a big room, so I need to fill the seats.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session
