Octanex says the NAGA 2 self-elevating mobile offshore drilling unit is ready for mobilization to the Ophir oil field offshore Malaysia.
The jackup started demobilizing from its previous drilling location and will shortly start its tow to the Ophir field where it is expected to arrive on 27 May 2017 for a three-well drilling campaign.
The three planned horizontal production wells target stacked oil reservoirs in a four-way dip closed structure previously discovered and tested by the discovery well, Ophir-1 and four additional appraisal wells, defined with 3D seismic data acquired in 2011, and supported by productive wells located in adjacent fields.
The Ophir oil field, off Peninsular Malaysia at some 70m water depth, is being developed via three production wells, a well head platform (WHP) and floating production storage and offload (FPSO) vessel.
The field is being developed under a risk service contract (RSC) granted in 2014 to OPSB, a joint venture company in which Octanex has a 50% interest.

Oil and gas wealth drove Malaysia’s go-go modernization during the 1980s and 1990s, with state oil firm Petronas emerging as one of Asia’s most profitable companies. That success was reflected its shiny iconic twin towers, once the world’s tallest, in downtown Kuala Lumpur.
But after more than two years of stubbornly low global oil prices, with prices falling from a per barrel high of US$145 in 2008 to a low of US$26 in 2016, Petronas is struggling to maintain its prominence as one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

There is no oil in Penang waters, an exco man told the state assembly today, following a DAP rep’s suggestion to halt reclamation and rely on possible oil reserves in the state’s waters for revenue.
Chow Kon Yeow (DAP-Padang Kota) said based on data from a petroleum industry study, there was no oil discovered in the waters of Penang.
Pointing out to an “Oil & Gas Map – Malaysia”, released during a petroleum industry convention in Kuala Lumpur in 2009, he said most of the oil was discovered on the east coast of Malaysia.
“Based on the National Oil and Gas Industries Body 2009 report published by the Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council, there is no oil in Penang waters,” Chow said in winding up his debate of thanks to the governor’s address today.

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 26th July, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The talk will be presented by Ir. Dr. Chong.
The conceive – design – implement – operate (CDIOTM) framework is implemented by educators to generate graduates, who are able to tackle complex engineering challenges. A set of 12 standards define this framework and how to implement it are useful for chemical engineers. Chemical engineers from the industry will be able to develop sustainable solutions using the structured framework. Several chemical engineering innovative projects are completed using the CDIOTM framework will be shared during the talk.
Medical Gas Piping System (MGPS) is required to deliver medical gasses supply to patients and surgical tools in hospitals. The medical gasses include oxygen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, Entonox, medical vacuum, anesthetic gas scavenging system, medical and surgical air. Since the gasses are delivered direct to patients the quality and reliability of the system is very important to ensure the live of the patients and the safety of the facilities.
Ir. Dr. Chong obtained his BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) in 2007 and PhD in Engineering from University of Nottingham. He also is a Chartered Engineer in UK and a Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers, Malaysia. He received President Award of Excellent from IEM for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. He also bagged the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award as ‘Taylor’s Most Cited Academic 2015’. His scholarly activities encompass leading research projects, spearheading academic collaboration with leading academic institution both in Malaysia and in the world. In his brief academic career, he published more than 50 international journals, conferences papers, technical bulletin/proceedings and book chapters. He is one of the CDIOTM leaders in Asia Region. His academic research interest is in the area of drying technology, energy, health and engineering education.

The Sahabat Maritim programme is an efficient platform for oil-and-gas companies and enforcement agencies to engage with fishermen on safety around offshore platforms.
Repsol Oil and Gas Malaysia Ltd stakeholder relations manager Farid Jaafar said the programme was a collaborative effort between Petronas, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and oil-and-gas companies.
“I think Sahabat Maritim is an excellent initiative. In the past we used to do things separately. It makes more sense to collaborate as we all work in the same area, namely offshore in the South China Sea.
“The Sahabat Maritim programme allows us all to collaborate and jointly engage the fishing community. It makes it more efficient,” he said at a media briefing on Repsol’s projects here yesterday.

Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah) said with the discovery of oil off northern Sumatra not far away, Penang could also have vast reserves.
Penang is planning to reclaim three islands south of Penang Island to fund its RM47 billion transport master plan, which includes transit lines, roads, highways and other modes of transport.
“Say, if vast areas of our sea have crude oil, what would be the state government’s strategy then?
“Maybe a detailed environmental impact assessment could be made to search for oil in Penang?
“Since there is oil off Aceh and northern Sumatra, we too might have great potential.
