PetGas looks beyond Malaysia’s gas needs

PETRONAS Gas Bhd (PetGas) had a good run in the 2010s. The gas infrastructure and utility player increased its pipeline and regasification capacity as Malaysia’s natural gas consumption rose by more than 80%. It also grew its necessary experience in the utility sector, including electricity, steam and gas products generation.

However, this decade may very well present a different landscape. For one, Malaysia’s gas industry market is expecting full liberalisation in the distribution segment in 2022 (see sidebar), with another regulatory review in 2023-2025. While PetGas’ monopoly in the gas infrastructure space remains unchanged, policy changes may set the tone for future returns from its regulated businesses of gas transport (pipeline) and regasification.

On Thursday night it was revealed that Petronas would end its support for SRT in the MotoGP world championship at the end of the current season, just three years into the squad’s career in the premier class.

The support will also end for the Petronas Sprinta Moto2 and Moto3 teams, with both outfits expected to be folded by SRT at the end of the year to safeguard the MotoGP project.

Malaysia’s Petronas eyes third floating LNG vessel amid upstream uncertainties

Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas has issued a front-end engineering and design tender for a third floating liquefied natural gas or FLNG plant, for which bids are due in August from interested parties, according to sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

The FEED study is expected to kick off before the end of 2021 and lead to a final investment decision on the unit dubbed PFLNG Tiga during the second half of 2022, sources said. Petronas declined to comment.

POSCO International wins right to explore gas fields off Malaysian Peninsula

 POSCO International, a trading arm of South Korea’s steel group, will work with Petronas, a Malaysian state oil and gas company, to explore gas fields in waters of the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsula.

In an international bid, POSCO International said it has won the right to explore and operate the PM524 minefield where Petronas already operates a gas field. The South Korean company aims to sign a product distribution contract within this year after coordinating with Petronas on detailed conditions.

POSCO International has picked promising mining areas by checking seismic waves and drilling data. The company will hold an 80 percent stake, along with the right to operate, while the remainder will be controlled by Petronas’ subsidiary, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Malaysian state company.

Design Begins for Malaysian Carbon Capture and Storage Project

The development of the first complete Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, offshore Malaysia, is getting underway for the oil and gas company Petronas. The conceptual engineering design contract for the project was awarded to the global energy consultancy Xodus. 

The Kasawari CCS project, off the coast of Sarawak, will comprise the capture and processing of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the sour gas field development, which will then be injected in a depleted gas field. This project is a key element of PETRONAS’ aspiration of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Uzma awarded Risk Transfer Incentive Contract Work Order for RM29 mil

Uzma Bhd through its wholly-owned subsidiary Uzma Engineering Sdn. Bhd. secured a Work Order Award from PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. for the Provision of a Risk Transfer Incentive Contract (RTIC) for Idle Wells Reactivation and Production Enhancement Services for Sabah assets.  

In a statement today the company said the contract duration is for three years beginning 13 July 2021 and ending on 12 July 2024 with an estimated contract value of RM29 mil.

The job scope of the contract involves deploying well intervention services to perform idle well reactivation activities at Offshore Sabah.

Blamed: Petronas in firing line for Covid cluster in Sarawak: report

A Sarawak lawmaker has reportedly blamed national oil company Petronas for a new coronavirus outbreak in the state’s oil and gas town Bintulu in Malaysia.

Bintulu Member of Parliament Tiong King Sing claimed that the potentially fatal Covid-19 was found in many of those on board the Grade One Manjung 7 (GOM 7), a Malaysia-flagged anchor handling vessel that had been working for Petronas.

The vessel had entered Bintulu port in Sarawak, East Malaysia in early July.

Tiong alleged that the GOM 7 had failed to carry out the compulsory 14-day vessel quarantine upon arrival as stipulated by the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) and had also allowed workers to disembark or others to board during that fortnight.

Malaysia offshore field fires up

Petrofac has brought on stream its East Cendor oilfield on Block PM 304 offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

East Cendor is the fourth field to be exploited on the block, following Cendor, West Desaru and Irama.

The project comprises the development of a single new wellhead platform (WHP) and installation of a new 6.3-kilometre pipeline linking the field to the existing floating production, storage and offloading vessel Cendor.

Output from East Cendor is expected to peak at more than 7000 barrels per day of oil, which will further extend the economic life of Block PM 304.

Petrofac Brings Online East Cendor Offshore Field in Malaysia

Malaysian oil and gas firm Petronas said Friday that Petrofac had brought online the East Cendor field in Block PM304, 40 kilometers offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

The field was developed by Petrofac as the operator and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company and Petronas Carigali as partners.

East Cendor is the fourth in the series of development in Block PM304, after Cendor, West Desaru, and Irama.
