Hess Starts Gas Production from NMB Phase 3 Project Offshore Malaysia

U.S. oil firm Hess has started gas production from the North Malay Basin (NMB) Phase 3 project in Block PM302, located 290 kilometres offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas shared the news of production startup on Monday.

Block PM302 is operated by Hess Corporation’s subsidiary, Hess Exploration and Production Malaysia B.V. (Hess) with a 50 percent participating interest, in partnership with Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, which owns the remaining 50 percent.


Malaysia’s Petronas, Sabah state launch masterplan for gas development

Malaysia’s state oil firm Petronas and the resource-rich state of Sabah on Tuesday launched a masterplan to develop the state’s natural gas resources, including the construction a liquefied natural gas plant.

The Sabah Gas Masterplan is the result of a joint study between the state and Petronas, both parties said in a joint statement.

It entails the construction of an LNG plant with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park, which will provide opportunities for Sabah to expand its LNG distribution across the state, they said.


Petronas discover gas from its Cengkih-1 exploration well in Sarawak

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has announced a gas discovery from its Cengkih-1 exploration well in Block SK 320 in the Central Luconia Province, about 220 kilometres off the coast of Bintulu, Sarawak.

The exploration well was successfully drilled to a total depth of 1,680 metres in August 2022, hitting more than 110 metres of gas column in Miocene Cycle IV/V pinnacle carbonate reservoirs, firming up more gas resources within Block SK320.

In a statement, the company said Mubadala Development Company Oil and Gas Ltd operates the block with a 55 per cent participating interest in the production sharing contract (PSC).


Fresh gas discovery off Malaysia

Abu Dhabi-headquartered oil and gas company Mubadala Energy (former Mubadala Petroleum) has made a new gas discovery in Block SK 320, offshore Malaysia.

This block is operated by Mubadala Energy, which changed its name from Mubadala Petroleum earlier this month in line with its 2030 strategy to play “a key role” in the energy transition while expanding across the gas value chain and exploring investment opportunities in new energy sectors such as blue hydrogen and carbon capture.

Johor Petroleum Development Corporation Bhd (JPDC) has produced about 6,000 skilled workers through upskilling and reskilling training programmes.

Two key initiatives – the Skills in Oil and Gas (Soga) and Bridging Gaps programmes with funding from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department – have helped them to prepare the manpower while meeting the needs of downstream oil and gas activities at the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) in Johor.

JPDC acting chief executive Izhar Hifnei Ismail said the figure included over 1,800 workers who had completed or were currently taking the Soga programme.

Petronas Gas Bhd (PetGas) said it has not issued any proposal or tender for the “alleged 700km pipe replacement project” from Johor’s Segamat district to Terengganu’s Kertih town.

“We wish to inform that PetGas and its subsidiaries have not, at current, planned or issued any proposal or tender for the said project,” the company said in a notice on its website.

As a gas infrastructure company, PetGas said it is under the purview of the Energy Commission (EC) pursuant to the Gas Supply (Amendment) Act 2016 and Third Party Access Code.


RM300bil-RM400bil in investments needed for Malaysia to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a nation with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 would require RM350 billion to RM400 billion in cumulative investments, mainly in the energy sector, representing 0.8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) every year until 2050.

Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said this shift includes continued investment in public transportation, tax incentives to promote electric vehicles, and the commitment to phase out coal.


Petronas to keep oil, gas focus for next decade
