May I suggest that readers install the Waze app on their phones? And use it as much as possible? It says its a “a social mobile application providing free turn-by-turn navigation based on the live conditions of the road. 100% powered by users, the more you drive, the better it gets. Join the community of drivers in your area today!” The more you use it, the better info I get in planning my journey round KL, and hopefully the rest of Malaysia

If you are fans of classic gaming, support those old time PC classics at Good Oil Games. I wish they had a local setup here. And they just started their Xmas 50% off drive!

Support your local bookshop! Visit Bookalicious at The Summit Subang, good selection of imported books. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and otherologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces

ROC Oil eyes more projects in Malaysia

December 8, 2011

Dateline 2011-11-29:

Australia’s ROC Oil Co Ltd is keen to bid for more Malaysian projects after clinching a deal to develop the Balai cluster marginal oilfield, offshore Sarawak, with partners Dialog Group Bhd and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

ROC general manager for corporate affairs and planning Mathew Gerber said Balai is an initial entry and the company aims to increase its presence in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector, if given the opportunity.

“We have a lot more to offer,” he said, adding that the project award is a vote of confidence in ROC’s abilities as an operator of small fields.

Vendor Engagement Session – December 2011

December 7, 2011

I attended a VES held at the PETRONAS Learning Centre, Bangi. A scan of the handout is here.

More interesting might be my notes of the Q&A session:

  • Payment for licensing & registration fees will be done via over-the-counter deposit at CIMB. Payment may be made via BizChannel, and by mid-2012, maybe CIMBClicks and Maybank2u.
  • Since the process is now self-guided, unlikely to be refunded the processing fee to due vendor errors during submission.
  • Announcements will be made on the website, but sufficient lead time between announcement and change/activity will be provided. Critical information will be sent via email to registered addresses.
  • You can appeal for unapproved SWEC. Who you contact? Beats me.
  • The requirement for agencies will still be on an exclusivity basis.
  • RETRO! The interface has been tested on IE8 (or lower) or Firefox 3.6 (or lower). No guarantees for Safari, Webkit, Opera, Lynx, Chrome or higher versions of IE or Firefox.
  • There will be a SWEC initiative review in 2012.
  • Frozen categories are still frozen categories. VDPs will be revamped next year.
  • Minimum Technical Requirement – If an MTR requires certification by an external body, but that body no longer provides said certification, then the requirement will be reviewed on a case by case basis

Lundin Petroleum Discovers Oil Offshore Malaysia

December 6, 2011

Dateline 2011-11-23:

(Lundin Petroleum) is pleased to announce that it has discovered oil in the Janglau-1 well that was drilled in Block PM308A, offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

Janglau-1 was drilled to a total depth of 3,820 metres by the jackup rig “Offshore Courageous”. The objectives of the well were Oligocene intra-rift sands and the underlying fractured pre-Tertiary section.

During drilling below 3,153 metres, oil was found in multiple pay sand units in an intra-rift sand/shale section that extended over a gross interval of approximately 300 metres. Oil samples were recovered at surface during drilling.

Malaysia centre for testing oil and gas software

December 3, 2011

We have a testing centre? Has iCON been sent there? Actually, did you know there was an autobiography of the late Steve Jobs entitled iCon Steve Jobs: The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business?

Dateline 2011-11-17:

Oil and gas software company IDS has set up a testing centre for oil and gas software in Malaysia, working together with the Malaysian Software Testing Board (MSTB), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak.

The centre is called “the Sarawak Chapter of the Malaysian Software Testing Hub (MSTH).”

It is part of the Malaysian Software Testing Hub initiative, which begin in 2009, with government stimulus money, aiming to make Malaysia and South East Asia a ‘centre of excellence’ for software testing.

‘This is a hugely significant step in confirming Malaysia as a centre of digital excellence. IDS will be an integral part of this effort, with initiatives to further develop product innovation and the skill level of software professionals in Sarawak, and Kuching in particular,” said Reuben Wee, Chief Technology Officer for IDS.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by YB Datuk Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia.

Petronas accelerating efforts to enhance production of oil and gas for M’sia

December 1, 2011

Dateline 2011-11-16:

THE excitement in the oil and gas (O&G) sector just gets better, with oil giants Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Royal Dutch Shell plc joining forces to further develop oilfields in Malaysia using the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology.

The duo had last week signed a heads of agreement for two 30-year production-sharing contracts (PSCs), which would entail a total investment of US$12bil (RM37.8bil), for projects using the EOR technology a technique to boost the extraction of crude oil and natural gas from existing fields off Sabah and Sarawak.

Involving four oilfields in the North Sabah area and nine in the Baram Delta off Sarawak, the EOR projects on a combined basis could be the biggest in the world in an offshore environment.

Shout Out – One Day Course On Process Integration For Waste Minimization And Production Carbon Footprint Reduction

November 29, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a course on the 19th December, 2011. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 6 CPD hours. You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM. They promise up that the elevator will be ready by the next AGM.

Due to the growth of world population and concurrent economic development, the demands for natural resources such as natural gas, crude oil and water are increasing rapidly.  For instance, global water withdrawal for most uses (i.e. domestic, industrial, and livestock) is projected to increase more than 50% by 2025.  Fossil fuels (petroleum and other liquid fuels, natural gas, and coal) are expected to continue supplying much of the energy used worldwide. Furthermore, increase of public awareness towards environmental sustainability is reflected in more stringent emission legislation that has motivated the process industries to look into cost effective and more sustainable manufacturing processes.  One of the active areas for cost reduction and sustainable process development is resources conservation activities, where process integration and pinch analysis techniques have been well recognised as promising tools.  In this workshop, the targeting philosophy of process integration is emphasised, where rigorous targets for waste minimisation and carbon footprint reduction can be identified.

The workshop will introduce you to the following topics:

  • How to identify a rigorous benchmark target for waste minimization in a process plant?
  • How to design a resource conservation network that achieves maximum recovery?
  • How can opportunities for carbon footprint reduction be identified?

Ir. Dr. Dominic Foo is a Professor of Process Design and Integration at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, and is the Director for the Centre of Excellence for Green Technologies.  He is a world leading researcher in process integration for resource conservation.  He establishes international collaboration with researchers from various countries in the Asia, Europe, American and Africa.  Dominic Foo is an active author, with two fore-coming books, more than 65 journal papers and made more than 120 conference presentations.  He served as an International Scientific Committee for several important conferences (CHISA/PRES, FOCAPD, ESCAPE, PSE, etc.).  He is the winner of the Innovator of the Year Award 2009 of Institution of Chemical Engineers UK (IChemE), as well as the 2010 Young Engineer Award of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).  He actively conducts professional training for practicing engineers.
