IEM Shout Out (OGMTD) – Talk on Controlled Blasting at Construction Sites

June 4, 2013

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on 8th June 2013. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 8:30) at Wisma IEM. We do have a lift, so no excuse. I have bad knees, and still manage to crawl up 2 flights.

With rapid development in Selangor/Wilayah Persekutuan there is now a need to build houses, factories and other structures in areas where it was not a choice before such as hilly areas, areas where there are outcrops, uneven and shallow bedrocks where there are needs for use of explosives. Explosives are used to level the foundations, to blast and excavate rock below ground for parking lots and stable foundation for high-rise building. However, the use of explosives without proper techniques may cause serious problems of fly rock, high ground vibration and air blast, which can be damaging. The talk will cover the legal and administrative requirements, technical requirement and blasting techniques as practiced in Selangor / Wilayah Persekutuan. Should be useful to engineers who are involved or likely to get involved as project managers/supervisors where blasting works is involved.

The above will be presented by Ir. Tony Chew. He  is now Deputy Director of Minerals and Geosciences Department of Malaysia (Mines and Quarry) Selangor / Wilayah Persekutuan. He graduated in 1999 from USM with a degree in Mineral Resources Engineering and MBA from University Malaysia Sabah in 2005. He served in Sabah from 2000-2010 and now in Selangor in the same section where he oversees mining and quarry operation including blasting work. He is also involved in overseeing blasting activities at construction site to ensure the blasting work is carried out according to the safety and environmental requirements.

May 23, 2013

Dateline 2013-05-14 from Bernama:

Malaysia’s oil and gas sector is expected to attract between RM10 billion to RM15 billion in acquisitions this year based on market trend and capital expenditure budgets.

Deloitte Southeast Asia Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Tax Leader and the Energy & Resources Leader for Singapore, Steven Yap said growth in the oil and gas sector in Malaysia will also be driven by investments for the replacement of existing resources for expansion.

He said more companies will be pursuing M&A activities in Malaysia, following the global trend where companies are seeking the obvious benefits of access to capital and improved profitability, alongside the sharing of technology and risk.

Marketing Rounds – Suicide Point

May 22, 2013

If this was an oil & gas project, there would be:

  1. Barricades to prevent the casual suicide.
  2. Warning notices to civilians to stay away
  3. Certificate of fitness by a scaffolding QA specialist.
