Malaysia Fuel Price To Motorists Is Eighth Lowest In The World

August 22, 2013

Dateline 2013-07-18:

Malaysia’s fuel prices are among the lowest in the world, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Only seven other nations — Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, United Emirates, Iran and Nigeria — sold fuel at prices lower than Malaysia.

In his winding-up speech of a supplementary bill, Mazlan said Malaysia was able to sell cheaper fuel because of the significant subsidy borne by the government.

He was answering to questions by several members of parliament on why the country’s fuel prices remained high although Malaysia is one of the main oil and gas players.

“The reason for this is because of the subsidy that the government provides to help ease the burden of the people.”

Malaysian Tapis oil field EOR project set to start up end 2013: ExxonMobil

August 18, 2013

Dateline 2013-07-10:

ExxonMobil’s Tapis enhanced oil recovery, or EOR, project, which will help sustain the current production level of Malaysia’s Tapis blend crude, is expected to start up by the end of 2013, a spokeswoman with the oil major’s Malaysian subsidiary said late Tuesday.

The spokeswoman declined to disclose the current production level of the light sweet crude, but market sources have pegged it at 150,000 b/d.

Tapis blend has an API gravity of 45 and 0.03% sulfur content and is mainly used by Petronas at its own refineries. Current spot availability is around 300,000-600,000 barrels/month, down from 1.2 million barrels previously.

PTPTN and the lack of Petronas specifics

August 17, 2013

Dateline 2013-04-20 (what?), the Sun

This is certainly an interesting development, since it brings the discussion to a different level. Have Petronas funds been effectively used anyway, for all these years? How, indeed, is our government making use of the country’s oil and gas revenues? Are they being responsibly managed? What kind of governance and accountability are we assured in the process of managing such a tremendous amount of wealth, contributed by our natural resources?

Malaysia is classified as a resource-dependent nation, since about 40% of our national revenues comes from oil and gas. I have previously written in this column about the dangers of oil dependency and the need for better resource management (“The paradox of plenty”, Nov 25, 2011). In this piece, the focus will be on oversight of the oil and gas sector in Malaysia, and whether there is a sufficient institutional framework to support transparency and accountability of the funds involved.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Subsea Processing and The Subsea Factory Vision

August 16, 2013

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 24th August, 2013. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 8:30) at Wisma IEM.

As demand for oil escalates and resources from the relatively easy onshore and shallow water fields becomes relentlessly depleted, oil companies are compelled to focus on more remote, complicated and deeper water reserves. This represents whole new technological challenges. Subsea production technologies have now come to the fore to be an enabler while contributing towards increased hydrocarbon recovery from this highly challenging environment. In recent years too, more and more equipment began to populate the seabed, thus giving birth to the ‘subsea factory’ vision. This presentation seek to provide an overview of some of the subsea processing technologies that made this transition from surface to the deep seabed possible, and giving a glimpse of how the subsea factory of the future may look like.

Lots of words. Further elaboration will be provided by Rudisham (Rudi) Marjohan:

Rudisham (Rudi) Marjohan graduated as a Mining Engineer from the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1993 with a minor in Petroleum Engineering. He has served in both mining, and oil and gas industries, spending considerable amount of time in exploration and drilling activities in various capacities and responsibilities. In 2008, a change of perspective saw his involvement in subsea production systems with Framo Engineering, a Schlumberger company and a recognized leader in the manufacture and supply of multiphase pumps and subsea systems. Framo Engineering is now part of OneSubsea, a 60-40 collaboration between Cameron and Schlumberger. Rudi is now based in Kuala Lumpur and is OneSubsea’s Asia Sales Manager for Pumps and Subsea Processing Systems

Three comments: ‘once again’, small fry, and don’t senior managers earn this much in a week?

Ishak claimed trial at a Sessions Court here to accepting RM200 for each lorry transporting gas from company directors Choo Ka Ckye and Abdul Khair Walli Mohamed at Lot 1485, Kampung Alor Janggus, Napoh in Jitra, between June 15, 2008 and noon on June 20, 2008.
