Tales from the Engineering Floor – Bad Report Day

July 20, 2011

Have you ever had days when it felt that the report you asked a junior engineer to do, but have already spent 10 hours rewriting the darn thing, made as much sense as this:

I presume this is a Japanese brand. I dread to think a Malaysian took a non-English text and used Google Translate.

From the Engineering Floor – Secret Engineering Project

July 15, 2011

Don’t know about you, but apparently there’s a research project in Wisma IEM that’s promoting inter-species communication. Maybe they thought it was easier then Mars-Venus intercourse.

Shout Out – Half Day Workshop on How to Assess Inherent Occupational Health in Chemical Process Plant

July 13, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 23rd July, 2011. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 3.5 CPD hours. You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM. They promise up that the elevator will be ready by the next AGM. And we have a member of that rarer species of lady engineers presenting the workshop.

The workshop will introduce you to the following topics:

  1. What is inherent occupational health concept and how it can be adopted during the design phase?
  2. How to assess inherent occupational health hazards at the different stages of the process design?
  3. How to quantify and characterize the risk of chemical exposure among workers?
  4. How to eliminate or reduce the health hazards in the process? What is the best design principle to be applied at the design stage?

Dr Mimi Hassim is a Senior Lecturer with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is an established and world pioneer researcher working on inherent occupational health studies of chemical processes. She published more than 10 journal papers and made a lot of presentations in various conferences. She has also received the best paper award in one the important congress. Her methods have been adopted by a major chemical company in Finland.

Shout Out – 2 Day Course on Value Base Maintenance Using Proactive Reliability Concept

July 12, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 25th and 26th July, 2011. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 12.5 CPD hours. You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM. They promise up that the elevator will be ready by the next AGM.

The course will discuss the importance of engineering and maintenance team to support an organization success. The basis of all maintenance activities has to be clearly defined so that the activities add value to the organization by aligning them with the vision, mission and values of the company. The concept and methodology of value creation by maintenance will be discussed with participants in an interactive manner.

Ir. Al-Khairi has a varied experienced in project, engineering, maintenance and reliability experience from various industries. Ir. Al-Khairi started his career a research assistant with Shell Research Centre in Thornton, United Kingdom in 1991. He came back to Malaysia and worked as a plant engineer with Associated Pam Malaysia Cement (APMC) Sdn Bhd, a cement plant, in Rawang, Selangor. He further developed his professional experience in oil and gas sector with Shell/PETRONAS via Malaysia LNG in Bintulu. He subsequently joined Uniqema Malaysia (an oleo-chemical plant), which is a subsidiary of Unilever and later ICI.

He went back to petrochemical plant when he became the Maintenance Manager with UCB Chemicals in 2002. His experience was enriched when he set up the facilities and equipment department with a world class Research and Development Company together with its factory set up. He then headed a similar role with a leading Medical Centre in Klang Valley prior to setting up his own consultancy company presently.

During his career, Ir. Al-Khairi has implemented various CMMS software’s such as SAP. MP2. Maintsavers and CWork. He also had won an award for his outstanding contribution on SHE excellent from ICI. Currently Ir. Al-Khairi is the Chairman of the Oil, Gas and Mining Technical Division of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia. Ir. Al-Khairi has developed an international alliance with other reliability Professionals under Uptime Alliance (see http://www.consciousasset.com and http://www.faqeh.com). Ir. Al-Khairi’s objective is to let the industry benefits from world class maintenance and reliability practices.

From Reuters – Malaysia’s 1st deepwater oilfield producing less-media

July 8, 2011

I think Kikeh is due for a makeover (or is that workover?). Dateline 2011-06-14:

Malaysia’s first deepwater field is producing less than expected due to sand in the oil although output should recover by this year, the Business Times reported on Wednesday, citing its operator Murphy Oil Corp .

“The workover programme should be completed this year and production rates back to the planned level,” a Murphy spokesman was quoted as saying.

“We have three well shut-ins due to fines migration coming through the sandscreens and being produced with the oil. It is important to keep the fines materials out of the surface process equipment.”

Murphy was not immediately available for comment.

Murphy’s Kikeh field offshore Malaysia’s Borneo state of Sabah has a current gross production of around 52,000 barrels of oil per day. The report did not say how much production had dropped to.

From Free Malaysia Today – Not a single decent road in oil-rich Sabah

July 7, 2011

Those of you in the intersection region of the Petronas – tycoon – Sabahian Venn diagram, you might want to pay attention. Dateline 2011-06-15:

Sabah is clearly not in the nation-building plans of the Barisan Nasional government in the last 47 years. For todate, “not a single decent trunk road or highway” has been built for the state.

A former Sabah minister, Kong Hong Ming, said the federal government had failed to build a modern road network in the state almost half a century since the formation of Malaysia.

He said Sabahans were still begging for infrastructural development despite regularly giving away 95% of the state’s oil and gas resources to the federal government.

Kong, now a PKR leader, has accused the Umno-led BN federal government of taxing Sabahans and treating Sabah as a backwater.
