Shout Out – One Day Course On Process Integration For Waste Minimization And Production Carbon Footprint Reduction
November 29, 2011This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be hosting a course on the 19th December, 2011. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 6 CPD hours. You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM. They promise up that the elevator will be ready by the next AGM.
Due to the growth of world population and concurrent economic development, the demands for natural resources such as natural gas, crude oil and water are increasing rapidly. For instance, global water withdrawal for most uses (i.e. domestic, industrial, and livestock) is projected to increase more than 50% by 2025. Fossil fuels (petroleum and other liquid fuels, natural gas, and coal) are expected to continue supplying much of the energy used worldwide. Furthermore, increase of public awareness towards environmental sustainability is reflected in more stringent emission legislation that has motivated the process industries to look into cost effective and more sustainable manufacturing processes. One of the active areas for cost reduction and sustainable process development is resources conservation activities, where process integration and pinch analysis techniques have been well recognised as promising tools. In this workshop, the targeting philosophy of process integration is emphasised, where rigorous targets for waste minimisation and carbon footprint reduction can be identified.
The workshop will introduce you to the following topics:
- How to identify a rigorous benchmark target for waste minimization in a process plant?
- How to design a resource conservation network that achieves maximum recovery?
- How can opportunities for carbon footprint reduction be identified?
Ir. Dr. Dominic Foo is a Professor of Process Design and Integration at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, and is the Director for the Centre of Excellence for Green Technologies. He is a world leading researcher in process integration for resource conservation. He establishes international collaboration with researchers from various countries in the Asia, Europe, American and Africa. Dominic Foo is an active author, with two fore-coming books, more than 65 journal papers and made more than 120 conference presentations. He served as an International Scientific Committee for several important conferences (CHISA/PRES, FOCAPD, ESCAPE, PSE, etc.). He is the winner of the Innovator of the Year Award 2009 of Institution of Chemical Engineers UK (IChemE), as well as the 2010 Young Engineer Award of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). He actively conducts professional training for practicing engineers.

May I suggest that readers install the Waze app on their phones? And use it as much as possible? It says its a “a social mobile application providing free turn-by-turn navigation based on the live conditions of the road. 100% powered by users, the more you drive, the better it gets. Join the community of drivers in your area today!” The more you use it, the better info I get in planning my journey round KL, and hopefully the rest of Malaysia
If you are fans of classic gaming, support those old time PC classics at Good Oil Games. I wish they had a local setup here.
Support your local bookshop! Visit Bookalicious at The Summit Subang, good selection of imported books. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and otherologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces
Since I’ve been exposed to FPSO’s recently, here’s a selection for you to be introduced to the topic:
FPSO Handbook, Ship-shaped Offshore Installations: Design, Building, and Operation, Floating Production Storage and Offloading: Vessel size, Topsides design, Re-fabrication, Hydrostatic analysis and Mooring system design.

PETRONAS finds “significant” oil off Malaysia’s Sabah
November 27, 2011Dateline 2011-11-15:
- Reserves of 227 mln boe, oil output rate of 8,200 bpd
- Estimated reserves have upside potential – PETRONAS
- Sabah has 12 pct Malaysia’s gas reserves, 25 pct of oil-analyst
Malaysia’s Petronas discovered oil offshore Sabah in the latest “significant” find this year in the hydrocarbon-rich state on Borneo island, as the national oil company sets to boost reserves and output amid easing production costs.
Initial estimates put the well’s reserves at 227 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) and tests in three different reservoirs yielded a maximum output rate of 8,200 barrels per day (bpd), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) said on Tuesday.
Petronas’ exploration and production arm, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, is the sole equity holder of the production-sharing contract (PSC) for the block. Wakid-1 is the second well drilled in the block. The first, Tambuku-1, yielded only minor gas discovery, Petronas said in a statement.

From Borneo Post Online – First batch of 45 oil and gas graduates snapped up
November 26, 2011Dateline 2011-11-11:
“All the 45 students from this first batch have already been snapped up (by oil and gas companies)… jobs are just waiting for them and future students,” said Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah.
The former Head of State was referring to the first batch of graduates from Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah Oil and Gas Academy (TAS Academy) and UMS Link Centre for Professional Development (UCPD).
The graduates who received Diplomas or Advanced Diplomas in a ceremony yesterday were “very marketable”, said Ahmadshah, who is the patron of TAS Academy.
“Some were getting offers even before they completed their courses. The courses offered are tough, and for them to complete the Diplomas or Advanced Diplomas means they are good,” he said.
Ahmadshah said some parents have asked the academy to increase its intake.

The Malay Mail – Evidence ‘blown up’
November 23, 2011Dateline 2011-11-08:
The key evidence which could have pinpointed the cause of the explosion at the Empire Shopping Gallery on Sept 28 is believed to have been wiped out in the blast.
The Energy Commission of Malaysia said such was the devastation caused by the blast that it is facing an arduous task in trying to determine the origin of the explosion.
Its gas safety head, Yusni Sharif, said the blast, which occurred at 3.30am, was so extensive that any clues such as gas pipes, CCTV systems and partitions in the affected part of the building were either destroyed or heavily damaged.
“The evidence (we have) is not helping us at all. It’s not easy to put the puzzle together,” he said after officiating at a gas safety workshop organised by the Malaysian Association for Shopping and Highrise Complex Management here last week.
Yusni said the commission was trying its best to gather more concrete evidence and it would “take some time” to conclude its investigations.
“Information from witnesses is also not giving us a proper insight into the explosion,” he told The Malay Mail.
He said the commission had three months to wrap up the investigations.
