From Bernama – Restaurant Gas Blast Believed Due To Shoddy Maintenance – Fire Department

December 10, 2011

I like it that an opinion for a Maju Junction blast is out, but not for the Subang Empire blast.

Dateline 2011-11-29:

The gas explosion two days ago at a restaurant at the Maju Junction shopping centre is believed to have been due to shoddy maintenance, said Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim.

He said restaurant operators or building owners who opted to use piped gas need to regularly maintain the system to prevent gas leaks that might cause explosions.

“Such a process is necessary for safety; piped gas is different from a normal gas tank as the pipe can leak without continuous maintenance,” he told reporters after the launch of a seminar on fire safety engineering design here Tuesday.

Winds Of Change For Lun Bawang, Thanks To Petronas

December 4, 2011

Dateline 2011-11-21:

The winds of change are bringing greater development to the Lun Bawang, one of Sarawak’s minority ethnic communities, thanks to the 512km Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline project now underway.

The US$500-million project, which spans Malaysia’s two largest states by passing through this remote enclave, will pipe natural gas from the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) complex in Bintulu.

Alfred Padan, a Lun Bawang community leader, told Bernama of his role in persuading local communities to assist in implementing Malaysia’s largest gas pipeline project undertaken by Petronas, the national oil corporation.

“Initially, the locals were not informed about the objectives of the project and some were opposed to it. But we were soon able to dispel talk that the project would bring more hardship than benefits.

December 3, 2011

Petronas accelerating efforts to enhance production of oil and gas for M’sia

December 1, 2011

Dateline 2011-11-16:

THE excitement in the oil and gas (O&G) sector just gets better, with oil giants Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Royal Dutch Shell plc joining forces to further develop oilfields in Malaysia using the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology.

The duo had last week signed a heads of agreement for two 30-year production-sharing contracts (PSCs), which would entail a total investment of US$12bil (RM37.8bil), for projects using the EOR technology a technique to boost the extraction of crude oil and natural gas from existing fields off Sabah and Sarawak.

Involving four oilfields in the North Sabah area and nine in the Baram Delta off Sarawak, the EOR projects on a combined basis could be the biggest in the world in an offshore environment.
