IEM Shout Out – Technical Visit to Yakult (M) Sdn Bhd

March 10, 2016

This is a shout out for the IEM. My technical division will be hosting a trip to Yakult. It will be a ‘technical’ visit (hint, hint) on the 19th March, 2016. You will be anointed with 3 CPD / PDP hours.

Yakult was born over 75 years ago and since then has been loved by 28 million of consumers overseas. However, in Malaysia, Yakult is still a young and growing company. Yakult Ace was launched here just a few years ago in 2004. Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Yakult Honsha, Japan. Yakult has committed millions of ringgit to establish and operate our one and only local factory in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan and our Head Office in Glenmarie, Shah Alam. Since then, we have opened branch offices in Johor Bahru, Melaka, Penang, Kuantan, Ipoh, Seremban and Kota Bharu. Yakult is a high quality probiotics in the form of a cultured milk drink. Yakult contains the probiotic bacteria “Lactobacillus casei Shirota” (also called the “Shirota strain”). With 30 billion live Shirota strain in each bottle, Yakult has among the highest concentrations of probiotics compared to other probiotics on the market (most probiotic drinks and supplements claim to contain at most 1 to 10 billion live probiotic bacteria per serving or per capsule). The Yakult factory was built specially with visitors in mind where the participants can view the whole production process and see how Yakult is being made and can even take a closer look at our bacteria using a microscope, enjoy fun and educational video shows, and sample some delicious, freshly-made Yakult.

Marketing Rounds – Where are the Floaters?

January 27, 2016

If you were wondering where the oil & gas industry stores floaters in the off season, wonder no more.

These were the entries to the UTP OGCE competition, and they were from secondary schools. Us jaded old timers could do well to learn from the young ‘uns. Give some love to your local school, whether monetary, time or engaging the minds of that generation.

IEM Shout Out – Half Day Workshop on Shell and Tube Exchanger Thermal Design

January 5, 2016

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting the above workshop on Saturday  16th January, 2015 by Ir. Anwar Ahmad.

During this Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Thermal Design course, there will be overview on the thermal design for designing shell and tube heat exchanger by considering design, operational, and maintenance perspective. The design of the heat exchanger is extremely important, as it is the key element of a heat-exchanged system. This is not only on the desired temperature to achieve during operation but also when considering the optimum design prior procuring an exchanger. Furthermore, properly designed heat exchanger can reduce the turn-down time for maintenance as no frequent cleaning is required while operating the plant or platform. Technologies involved in this thermal technology will be discussed during the workshop to highlight the importance and advantages when designing and operating shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE).

Ir. Anwar Ahmad is a registered Professional Engineer with Board of Engineer (BEM), Corporate Member with Institute of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Corporate Member with Institute of Chemical Engineers, UK (IChemE), Chartered Engineer from Engineering Council, UK with more than eleven (11) years experiences in process engineering in oil and gas industry, mainly in design with engineering firm and operation for technical support during turn around.

You can register here. Flyers may be obtained here.

Over RM300 billion invested in Sarawak, says Petronas subsidiary chief

December 26, 2015

Dateline 2015-11-22, TMI:

Petrolian Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has a strong presence in Sarawak, with total cumulative investment of over RM300 billion in the upstream, midstream and downstream projects and activities, said LNG Group of Companies vice-president and chief executive officer (CEO) Dzafri Sham Ahmad.

He said for upstream, there were 60 oil and gas producing fields – 26 oil and 34 gas – producing an average of 850 kilo barrel oil equivalent per day (kboe/d).

“Additionally there are another 206 discovered fields which are yet to be monetised,” he said at the Petronas Media Nite 2015 in Kuching last night.

He said for midstream there were three facilities – Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu; Petronas Train 9 project; and, the floating LNG facility.
For downstream, he said, there were currently two operating units in the state — Asean Bintulu Fertiliser plant which produced 0.6 million tonnes per annum (MPTA) of urea, making it Asia’s largest granular urea plant and 0.4 MTPA of ammonia.

Petronas wins big at IChemE Malaysia Awards

December 12, 2015

Dateline 2015-10-29, TCE:

PETRONAS had cause to celebrate at IChemE’s Malaysia Awards this week, winning three of the eight categories.

The state energy major scooped the Oil & Gas award, Sustainable Technology award and Young Chemical Engineer in Industry award, at a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October.

PETRONAS topped the oil and gas category for its development of a new low-viscosity drilling fluid – produced at its Melaka refinery – that operates at low temperature conditions, providing improved drilling conditions. The product – known as MG3DFTM – also has a low aromatic content and a higher flash point for improved safety and environmental performance.

It won the sustainable technology prize for developing a process to produce polyols and polyol esters – used in the production of polyurethanes and lubricants – from palm oil-based fatty acids rather than fossil feedstocks.  PETRONAS process safety engineer Ezmal b Ab Rashid won the Young Chemical Engineer in Industry prize for the pivotal role he plays in design safety for the company’s major capital projects.
