Saturday Star 2009-12-26 – Job Opportunities

There were no newspapers published (or at least none distributed) last Saturday. Off the top of my head, the current jobs available are:

  • Rumour has it that Petrofac is looking for a Project Manager to handle insanely large amounts of money. Jabba should apply.
  • Synergy is looking for lead safety engineers, safety specialists, junior and lead process engineers and technical writers. We’re on an expansion drive, people! Visit the Synergy website for contact details. For leads, you need 5 years plus experience in the oil & gas industry. For safety specialist applicants, you need to be well versed in HAZOP, HAZID, QRA, FERA and Formal Safety Assessment. Ah, heck. If you have more than 5 years experience in O&G, apply. If you have less than 5, send a donation to the offshore account, and still get abuse. For juniors, go pick up a copy of Cambridge’s ChemEng syallabus, and go study like the Tripods (all of them) are tomorrow.

It is enough 5 yrs exprience to be Leads?
Some clients consider it as technical assisstant only…

  2. Illusion says:

I think 5 years experience as Leads

  3. JabbatheHutt says:

Nope, i think a bit more than five. but depending on their skills, they can be seniors.

    leads are more like 10.

but then again, where are you going to find someone with that sort of experience.

  4. Anonymouse says:

I heard petrofac pays very well…is it true or is it just a myth?

  5. Jabbathehutt says:

    Synergy pays better.

  6. Anonymouse says:

Actually why do ppl stay on the technical side for so long when obviously those on the commercial/mgmt side are the ones rising up the corporate ladder?

Sometimes i just wonder whether it’s worth to continue doing technical work when my friends who started on the commercial side (b. analyst/pet economist/b. development)are earning much more.

    Sigh.

    • Anoni says:

Because those ppl who stays on technical side like me don’t like to B.S. and deal with S.H. We would rather deal with equipments and less on the ppl side….

Asides from that, everyone wants to be Master… not many wants to be the workers… And being a worker, it’s very easy for us to switch jobs should we get in conflict with our bosses… We can kiss them goodbye… And especially if you are highly skilled… Other jobs will be waiting for us…

    • Anoni says:

      Darn it… pardon the grammar… stay .. no s for sgl…

Anyway, those ppl who stay in the technical area have more chances of getting jobs elsewhere should they decide to move due to one thing or another…. Fate has it that I have kept on moving and every time the move was because of the boss… My boss can’t toss me around and order things inappropriately… I have my own principle, and if I can’t tolerate him, then kiss him goodbye.

Another advice… if u intend to stay on the technical side, try to specialize in an area that not many ppl can do… or at least you have the sought after skills… It will carry you a long way….

  7. JabbatheHutt says:

Ah, handling insanely large amount of money.

    I don’t handle, i swindle……

    Synergy advertise in Jobstreet.

Chemical engineer only? Mech Eng also can do flow assurance wat 🙂

  9. JabbatheHutt says:

yes, but all the fundamentals are fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, which is stronger in a chem eng.

secondly, its the employer that demands. unless you’ve got 5 yrs flow assurance with mech degree, chances are wata will dump your cv.

  10. Izmal says:

    Sir,

How about with Document Controller position, any vacancy?

What kind of requirement, or working experience should be suit for this position.
What kind knowledge for Electronic Info Mgt/Doct Mgt requirement; EDMS,Livelink,SharePoint or others.

Since this consider a big project, it should have DC.

  11. Anonymouse says:

    Thanks for the advice.

When i first graduated, i had this thought of taking the road “less traveled by” with a mech degree which is to go into flow assurance since we do learn fluids mech & thermodynamics (extensively) in our course. Indeed, we had thermo I , II & III as part of the syllabus and fluids I & II if i’m not mistaken. I also once saw some recruitments ads for FA engineer with the requirement stated as “petroleum/chemical/mechanical”.

Well, thank God i didn’t make the wrong decision. Otherwise, I might be having a tough time now! 🙂

  12. Anonymouse says:

What about a person with BSc in Mech Eng & MSc. in Petroleum Engineering? What are the chances?

It’s good to have some information from employers point of view as sometimes recruitments ads are really confusing. Some say “yes” for this background and some say “no”.

  13. JabbatheHutt says:

    ok, let uncle jabba explain.

to be a flow assurance engineer, you need to solve problem of flow in a pipeline. however, these problem tend to be of fluid mechanics in nature, which is learnt by both mech and chem eng students.

however, that’s the first part. what client wants to know is how we solve the problem. what is the sizing of the receiving facility equipment. how big should the slugcatcher be? (I won’t explain what a slugcatcher is) what sort of inlet throttling valve configuration you need. how big the valve should be? what CV you need? what level settings? how big is the LCV on outlet needs to be….

all these are process engineering question, which is a chemical engineer’s forte. that’s why most FA engineer needs to have some sort of process engineering training. and to be a process engineer, its mostly chem eng.

PS. I won’t argue that all process eng must be chem eng, I know a few very good process engineers which are non chem eng graduate, but that’s a different story.

  14. Anonymouse says:

thanks for the explanation uncle jabba 🙂

  15. arh says:

thank god im into HSE. we get to do wat we love and still get the knowledge from all those explained above!

  16. JabbatheHutt says:

arh, i love hse as i get to see ppl die from lack of it…..

i’ve seen people cooking noodles next to acetylene bottles…. beat that…..

  17. arh says:

cant beat that but dig in this.. a scaffolding tube slip off the hands of a scaffolder during erection from a quench tower of like as tall as the flare towers in those PAKA downstream plants. fell all the way down and broke the road pavement(damn lucky no one was walking by) wanna know the incident report findings? the f**kin scaffolder does not have a thumb! imagine that.. i was speechless..

  18. JabbatheHutt says:

without a thumb, you qualify as partially handicap.

i wonder how he plays himself without a thumb.
