I went to Kerteh on Tuesday, 2nd June, 2009, taking Firefly as I thought it would be the less time consuming and more comfortable.
Bad move.
The flight returning that night was canceled. Rumour had it that before the cancellation, the flight was delayed such that if it came to Kerteh it would be too dark to be allowed to take off again (I assume this is about 8pm). You can imagine the agonies of the passengers when told they were rescheduled on the next morning’s flight.
I took off to the Awana Kijal and it being the school holidays only the more expensive rooms were available. At Rm375/pop, arriving at 9pm and leaving at 6:40am, this is not one of the best ways to spend my company’s money.
Firefly said they would reimburse the costs of hotels, transport incurred due to this situation. I won’t be holding my breath.
Update 2009-06-04: Firefly rep called me today, and said that they were processing my claims. And oh, you know the rumour I had mentioned previously? Take it as fact, was confirmed during my chat with the rep. Again, not holding my breath on claims.

Maybe the pilots were the cheaper hire, where they are not license to do night landing, so they can take off/land after dark.
It is dangerous, when airlines start to cut corners.
Jabba: I would look at the control tower at Kerteh, it was they who would not allow the plane to take off in the dark.
