Saturday Star 2009-05-02 – Job Opportunities

Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:

  • None for O&G engineers.

So, it’s an employers’ market. I’m thinking of paying SOGE’s next engineer a pound of salt, and some garlic-flavoured peanuts.

hello mr wata, i wanna ask u sumting….is it wise for me to jump to another company at this moment??…

    • Wata says:

harun: nothin special about this moment about jumping jobs. If the new company offers more dosh, and will not retrench people according to the LIFO sequence, jump by all means.

  2. salleh says:

as you said, it is the employer’s market, na advertismnet is required. Operators are looking for experiance engineers.

  3. Anjakan_putera says:

Wata. I have a question for you. May I know what is a standard basic salary of graduate offshore pipeline engineer(construction) Because I had an offer but i think the basic salary is quite low RM 2000. Hope you can reply

  4. Zidni says:

I’ve seen/heard at least 3 jumped ship this time around

  5. Jabbathehutt says:

at RM2000 is too high. graduate should be only paid RM1300. (i’ve got 8 graduates working here paid at that price).

putera:consider it as investment-lah.you work there for a while earning 2k.then jump petronas getting 3.5K for couple of yrs building network and experience. After that jump to pipeline consultant like JP Kenny or sapura crest. Then after work with saudi aramco and comeback to Malaysia debt free and become your local taman ajk surau and fulltime father to your kids.as the saying of the current generation – “pelan pelan kayuh”

  7. Jabbathehutt says:

Just for your knowledge, after you join Petronas for 2 years, a proper pipeline designer won’t hire you (Jabba speaks as ex-pipeline consultant).

These are the three company: Pegasus, Intec, JP Kenny, try them.

If you go in, expect RM1300-1600. Jangan harap boleh dapat banyak banyak….chnces are they won’t have an opening now.

The rule is like this, if you start low, you grow exponentially. Invest in your future. As Wata would know, my first salary is RM600, and now, I can buy a car every month.

My point is to join any PSC (whether shell, petronas, conoco, murphy etc) only after you have 5 yrs experience. The RM500 difference is not worth your future.

    • PoorPipeliner says:

Jabba…i’m in one of the companies you listed above…the salary is not as bad as you posted ..it’s more of an average market rate for fresh grad engineers..

Still, the pay is low compared to operators..Shell for example pays about RM6000+ (including allowances) for fresh grad pipeline engineer to work in miri…while i’m getting about 1/3 of that in a design consultant..i know i have to be patient…but just how long can i survive with this salary… 😦

      • JabbatheHutt says:

RM6000, no lah, that’s including housing benefit etc. Jabba worked with Shell also as client side.

Anyway, my salary started at RMxxx/month. When I joined Shell, it went up 73 times (of course include benefit).

hang in tight, and you’ll be alright. which one you’re working with, P, I, or J?

      • PoorPipeliner says:

I’m in “Number 2″…have to use code lah. Bosses nowadays like you guys are very IT savvy(blog, facebook, friendster, kawanster etc)

They might be lurking here..and if they catch me complaining ..i think i’m gonna get 0.3 of the amount stated above starting from next month

        Haha 🙂

      • JabbatheHutt says:

        Poorpipeliner….

ah soooo, so you are working with uncle stevie wonder lee… Mus and the boys eh…

I still remember kerang busuk, the bodoh alfa romeo playboy and uncle baldy. The three musketeer.

so we worked in the same company.

  8. Anjakan_putera says:

  9. PoorPipeliner says:

    Jabba,

I know the first person you mentioned…but the rest not too sure..i’m new here

Yeah, ivy, michelle, irene & the rest of the girls are still here…not bad..quite nice environment..enjoying my job as well 🙂

What did you do when you were here? Flow assurance?

  10. JabbatheHutt says:

Yes, I wrote the thick PM3 rubbish flow assurance report.

Mus should be doing flow assurance in your office. He’ll know who Jabba is. Mention the asshole sitting opposite him in IGL and he’ll know its me.
