Here’s a quick one. SOGE was trying to get some consulting staff from Indonesia quickly. Of course wanted the most cost effective (read cheap) fare.
Well, it turned out that for the period we wanted to send people across, if you added less than 5 USD to the cost of the AirAsia flights we were looking at, you can someone across on business class.
And no, we didn’t send that person on business class. Can you imagine the uproar it would cause:
“The got WHAT class?”
“But pak, when XXX went across, they said that they got shrimp and mango salad onboard…”
What do you think we are, some posh company listed on the Helsinki Exchange?

The best alternative from Jakarta to KL is:
Take bus from Jakarta to Merak (tip of Jawa) – USD3
Take a ferry to Sumatra – USD5
Take another bus to Medan – USD10
Take a speed boat across – USD10
Take a bus to KL – USD5
Voila….USD33… although it does take 2 full days to make the trip. but if I’m not travelling, i don’t care.
