Warisan rep chides ex-colleague over petroleum sales tax issue

December 9, 2020

Dateline 2020-11-12, FMT:

There is no truth to claims that former Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal did not pursue the 5% sales tax on petroleum products because he was worried about offending former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Warisan’s Merotai assemblyman Sarifuddin Hata came to his party president’s defence today following comments by former assistant finance minister Kenny Chua on the issue.

Yesterday, Chua had agreed with STAR’s Tulid assemblywoman Flovia Ng’s allegation over Shafie’s refusal to pursue the matter until after the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government in February this year.

CM: Sabah will continue to pursue 20pc from Petronas

June 9, 2020

Dateline 2020-05-14, Malay Mail:

Petronas’ new agreement with Sarawak does not have any bearing on Sabah, who just imposed a 5 per cent sales tax on petroleum products beginning last month.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said that the state was sticking to its 5 per cent sales tax while it continued to pursue a 20 per cent oil royalty deal with the federal government that it has been eyeing for decades.

“That’s their negotiations with Petronas. We’ve already imposed the sales tax. We have an understanding with them and other petroleum companies,” said Shafie when asked to comment on Sarawak’s new agreement with Petronas and the federal government.

Sabah to emulate Sarawak in controlling oil and gas laws

November 20, 2018

Dateline 2018-09-10, FMT:

Sabah will look into bolstering laws involving exploration of oil and gas and mining activities in the state, following in the footsteps of its neighbour Sarawak which tightened controls over such matters in July.

Chief Minister Shafie Apdal said he would request the state attorney-general (AG) to look into the matter.

“We are looking into it but I was made to understand by the former AG that we do have that mineral enactment in Sabah. I will ask the (current) AG to look into the details, whether there’s any loopholes in that.

Sabah will pursue 20% oil royalty demand, assures Shafie

July 21, 2018

Dateline 2018-07-07, FMT:

Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal has maintained that the state will work on its demand for 20% oil royalty from the federal government in line with his party’s manifesto for the recent general election.

“What we’ve spelled out in the manifesto, our 20% oil royalty, we’ll pursue it,” the Parti Warisan Sabah president said on the sidelines of an event here today.

Shafie had said on April 27, while launching the party’s 13-point manifesto, that Warisan would ensure the oil royalty due to the state increased from the current 5% to at least 20% if it won the state in the polls.
