PetChem’s chieftain Sazali to head Petronas downstream division, sources say

Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PetChem) managing director-cum-chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sazali Hamzah is set to be appointed as Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) executive vice president and CEO of Downstream business, sources told The Edge.

Sazali, 55, will take over the position from Datuk Md Arif Mahmood, who will be retiring from the national oil firm on Jan 1, 2022 after 37 years of service.

Sazali will relinquish his post as the managing director of PetChem by the same date, a role which he has served since May 2014.

Petronas Chemicals Bhd., a unit of Malaysia’s state energy company, said it’s in talks with petrochemical firms from Asia and Europe to invest in a $27 billion oil refining and petrochemical project, sustaining hope the country can find a partner after at least three previous deals fell through.

Companies from Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan and Italy have expressed interest in joining the Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development, or RAPID, said Chief Executive Officer Sazali Hamzah, declining to identify them. Earlier plans by Petronas Chemicals’ parent, Petroliam Nasional Bhd., to develop petrochemical plants at the complex in the southern state of Johor with Evonik Industries AG, BASF SE and Kuokuang Petrochemical Technology Co. never materialized.

 


PCG to finalise Malaysia RAPID project line-up by end-‘15

Malaysia’s PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) is planning to finalise investment plans for the Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Complex (RAPID) in southern Johor state by the end of this year, the company’s president and CEO said on Tuesday.

“Our team has already started evaluating which are the areas what we want to participate in… By the end of this year, we will most likely know and finalise our participation in RAPID,” Sazali Hamzah told ICIS on the sidelines of the 18th Asia Oil & Gas Conference (AOGC) in Kuala Lumpur.
