Growing market for gas

March 7, 2014

The Star, dateline 2014-01-27:

It was recently reported that the Government is considering restricting the sale of RON 95 to only those in the lower-income bracket.

According to a report from market researcher Euromonitor International, fuel subsidies both help and hurt consumers. The report says that, on average, consumers in the richest 20% of the population get six times as much total benefit from fuel subsidies as do those in the poorest 20%

Over the last 10 years, crude oil prices has soared, affecting millions of Malaysians. Despite the constant increase, vehicle sales in Malaysia has never been better as fuel prices has always remained relatively low compared to our neighbours.

Last year, total vehicle sales hit an all-time high of more than 652,000 units, surpassing an initial forecast of 640,000 units by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Little known Malaysian NGV and Jeffa Holdings to build RM3.6 billion regasification plant

January 8, 2013

Dateline 2012-12-28:

Little known Malaysian NGV Sdn Bhd (MNGV) is partnering with Johor-based property and plantation company, Jeffa Holdings Sdn Bhd to build a regasification plant in Tanjung Langsat, Johor and 200 natural gas stations called ‘1GasStation’ with a total investment of RM6 billion.

MNGV is the holder of a license to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), process and distribute the natural gas for vehicles and compressed natural gas for local consumption. It was incorporated in 2005.

Its president and CEO Rahmat Ahmad said Jeffa Holdings will facilitate the funds for this mega green infrastructure distribution channel theme ‘1Gas Clean Energy For All’ and the main contractor for the plant.

From the NST: Unlikely Petrol Price Change

February 17, 2009

To increase my readership, I’ve decided to take some words from the New Straits Times, dateline 2008-02-14:

Petrol and diesel prices are not likely to change as there is no significant change in world crude oil prices.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the ex-refinery prices of fuel remain high although the price of crude oil had gone down.

“As such, if we use the crude oil price as the indicator to lower fuel prices, this mean we would be giving out more subsidy,” Shahrir said at the Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Carnival organised by the Johor NGV Users Association here today. “We have already subsidised 30 sen a litre. If we are to lower fuel prices again, we will have to spend more for subsidy. Previously, there was no problem to base the pump prices of fuel on crude oil price. This is because the crude oil price is moving in tandem with the ex-refinery prices. Now, it is no longer the case.”

You can subscribe to an online version of the paper at the Bluehyppo site, follow links to e-browse.

BTW, what do you do at the NGV Carnival? Rides on NGV fairground attractions? Win a NGV conversion unit during the raffles? Eat NGV themed delicacies? Or does it look like any other (add generic name here) carnival?

Dangers of Unapproved Modification – NGV

Here’s an article from the Star.

Man killed in NGV explosion

By CHEN PELF YEEN and ALLISON LAI

MALACCA: Two brothers who converted a cooking gas tank into a natural gas kit for their van paid dearly when it exploded, killing one of them.

Mohd Hailmi Ishak, 25, from Kampung Duyong, and his brother Rosli Ishak, 30, from Taman Tiang Dua, had stopped at a PETRONAS petrol station in Batu Berendam at about 7.50pm on Friday to refuel.

Their worker Razali Md Zin, 31, was with them.

It is believed that Rosli, the driver, was refilling the van at the natural gas vehicle (NGV) stand while his younger brother was standing nearby when the blast happened.

The explosion shattered the front portion and two doors of the vehicle.

It shattered Mohd Hailmi’s left leg and ripped open his abdomen while Rosli and Razali escaped with light injuries.

You see a lot of this jury rigging work offshore, difference is, the jury rigging is engineered as opposed to ‘try and see lah’ philosophy. Thing’s I’ve done are:

  • Use a flange that had a higher than required rating.
  • Use a smaller than design size valve (it’s okay, the process flow had been reduced).
  • Use a process compressor for other than it’s intended use (don’t worry, risk analysis was performed).
  • Route liquid to different vessels (there’s a whole story behind this one).

This is where your engineering (and presentation and persuation) skills are called to the forefront.

NGV / CNG Motorcycles?

July 2, 2008

Noting that here in Malaysia there has been a lot of interest in converting petrol vehicles to NGV guzzlers, I was musing on the idea that perhaps motorcycles could undergo the same surgery.

Sniggers could be heard, erupting into full blown laughter after introducing the plan to others.

Other parties have stifled their mirth, put pen to paper. The results are here, here, here.
