IEM Shout Out – Transforming Facilities Management

April 4, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 7th April, 2010. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

New maintenance activities need to be strategized so that optimum effort is being put by the maintenance team to get a reliable equipment and facilities operation. Methodologies such as condition based will assist in forming good predictive maintenance protocols. The selection of equipment for condition monitoring has to be based on risk assessment so that only important equipment is monitored to reap maximum value from the exercise. A good strategy for implementation and understanding of the whole maintenance concept will ensure the success of the initiatives. This approach requires skill engineering team with a strong management support. Only with this transformation than the facilities will be operated and maintained in a world class standard matching with the facilities development.

The presenter,

Ir. Al-Khairi Mohd Daud , P.Eng, C Eng, MIEM, B.Eng (Hons) – Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds, MBA. Ir. Al-Khairi had a varied experienced in project, engineering, maintenance and reliability experience from various industries. Ir. Al-Khairi started his career a research assistant with Shell Research centre in Thornton, United Kingdom in 1991. He came back to Malaysia and worked as plant engineer with Associated Pam Malaysia Cement (APMC) Sdn Bhd, a cement plant, in Rawang, Selangor. He further developed his professional experience in oil and gas sector with Shell/Petronas via Malaysia LNG in Bintulu.

IEM Shout Out – Welding Requirements for Pressure Vessels

February 23, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a course on the 2nd and 3rd March, 2010. You’ll get to visit TNB’s Intergrated Learning Solution – ILSAS at Bangi in additiion to getting 13 CPD points.

The course provides basic knowledge and understanding of design requirements to engineers in selecting proper welding technology for pressure vessel manufacturing and structural design. In the course participants will gain basic understanding of the following: –

  1. welding symbols in accordance to AWS A 2.4 and BS EN 22553 (ISO 2553)
  2. behaviour of welded structures under different types of loading
  3. factors affecting fatigue and types of fractures failure
  4. design principles for static pressure vessels and aluminum structures

The Presenter, Ian Partridge, is Principal Project Leader, Equipment Risk Consulting, Structural Integrity Technology Group, TWI. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Member of the UK Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Admitted to the Int. Register of Prof. Eng (IntPE).

Flyers for the above and other events may be obtained here.

IEM Shout Out – Electrical Reliability Mindset in The Petrochem, O&Gas Plant Industries

February 8, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. A Technical Division will hosting the above talk on the 9th February, 2010. It’ll be at 6:00 pm (makan-makan at 5:30) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

The full title of the talk is An Evening Talk, “Introduction of Electrical Reliability Mindset to The Petrochemical, Oil, and Gas Plant Industries”. The speaker, MR. JIM WARDHAUGH graduated from University of Liverpool, is a Chartered Engineer, and spent about 10 years in utilities then about 30 years with Shell. He has demonstrated success in senior management and hands-on positions in many different roles (projects, construction, maintenance, technical, inspection, warehousing, transport, quality, and training) in a number of different countries; in each a step-change improvement in performance was achieved.

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’

IEM Shout Out – Fundamentals Of Dynamic Simulation

February 4, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting the above seminar on the 6th February, 2010. It’ll be at 9:30 am (makan-makan at 9:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

Process simulation is a model-based representation of chemical, physical and other technical processes and unit operations in oil, gas and petrochemical plants. The fundamentals are a thorough knowledge of chemical and physical properties of pure components and mixtures and of process reactions. All these are combined with mathematical models which allow the calculation of a process in computers.

Shahrul Azman Zainal Abidin is a Principal Engineer in Process Simulation and Optimization. Shahrul Azman graduated as a Chemical Engineer from California State University, Long Beach, USA in 1988. He obtained his MSc in Gas Engineering degree from University of Technology Malaysia in 1996.

Both Shahrul Azman and Zalina are serving Group Technology Solutions, Research & Technology Division of PETRONAS.

The speakers are very passionate about their work, and would welcome any questions you care to bring up. Heck, bring along your copy of iCon if you have one.

If you want to see what Synergy does, please come and bring up our name in the question and answer session.

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’

IEM Shout Out – Overview of Maintenance Management (2 days)

February 2, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My tech division, in conjunction with ILSAS will be running a course on Maintenance management. It will be held on the 9th & 10th February, at the TNB Integrated Learning Solution in Bangi.

The objective of this course is:

  • To introduce the participant to the maintenance function in the organization
  • To describe how the  maintenance function supports the organization’s objectives
  • To enlighten the participant in world-class maintenance practice criteria and benchmarks
  • To understand maintenance philosophy and its practical application in the workplace.
  • To provide techniques in developing a maintenance strategy tailored for the participant’s maintenance department
  • To develop skills in maintaining maintenance data and record analysis
  • To appreciate Asset Life Cycle Issues

I applaud organisations that treat maintenance as an integral part of asset operations, and not as a sacrificial lamb that is the first to get struck of when the going gets tough.

From IEM – Mentor Guidelines

January 24, 2010

I turned up at the IEM a week ago 2010-01-18, to attend a presentation / workshop on how to improve the mentor system to create and nurture responsible members of humanity. I don’t have pictures of the fisticuffs, but I do have handouts as to the minimum expected from a mentor.

Humor aside, if you think that the quality of engineers needs some butt kicking, excuse me tender nurturing, please volunteer your time and skills, and heal the world together.

Shout Out – Talk on Ecotowns for Asia

November 20, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on 24th November, 2009. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

This talk will cover such topics as, what is sustainability and why it is important, what advances are being made, what types of technology are now available in the market and will present a proposal on how to integrate this technology in a holistic manner in the form of Eco-Towns for Asia.

I definitely agree, we need to have communities that don’t mess up the environment. And if they do, hey it’s your trash, you will sleep in it, play in it, eat in in, don’t ship it to where it becomes someone else’s problem (SEP if you follow the HHGTTG).

The above will be presented by Mr. Joe Eades, the Managing Director for Ispahan Engineering Pte Ltd, (www.ispahan.com) an engineering company specialized in engineering for the process industries, and Ispahan Solutions which provides Enterprise and Engineering Document Management software solutions for the engineering and construction industry.

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’
