Malaysia strengthens its position as a key gas player in the region

August 2, 2019

Dateline 2019-06-26, NST:

Malaysia is poised to further strengthen its potential as a key gas player in the region by capitalising on its existing extensive gas infrastructure.

The natural gas industry has also contributed significantly to the national gross domestic product over the years, while encouraging investments opportunities for local businesses.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said Malaysia has recorded consistent economic expansion due to strong economic fundamentals and diverse sectorial strength despite the ongoing global economic challenges.

“As we look to sustain this momentum moving forward, the oil and gas industry, which is Malaysia’s second highest export earner is most definitely a key contributor to the country’s trade,” he said in a speech, which was read by his deputy Senator Dr. Mohd Radzi Md Jidin at the inaugural Malaysian Gas Symposium (MyGAS 2019), here today.

The Sarawak government’s move to impose a 5 per cent sales tax on petroleum products produced in the state will not only affect Petronas but also the market, said Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

He said the matter should be discussed further as any increase in costs due to additional tax would lead to lesser demand as it would be more expensive than products produced in other oil producing countries.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali today said that the government needs to recalibrate its finances first before it can pay the balance of the oil royalty payment owed to the Terengganu due to the nation’s current fiscal position.

During his winding up speech on the Midterm Review of the 11th Malaysian Plan (RMK11), Azmin said the federal government is not delaying the payment but had no choice and had to “recallibrate its finances”.

“I give my commitment that the new government under the leadership of His Most Honourable Langkawi will ensure we keep our promises,” Azmin replied to Kuala Nerus MP (PAS) Datuk Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali who wanted to know when the state will receive its Petronas oil royalty.
