A Sarawak minister said Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin has no say on whether Sabah and Sarawak can get 20% oil royalty from Putrajaya.

“It’s not for Bung to decide on whether Sabah or Sarawak can get the 20% oil royalty or not, ”Sarawak’s Tourism Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told FMT.

“Whether Sabah or Sarawak get the 20% oil royalty wholly depends on the executive’s decision. If the prime minister agrees, then it will happen. Therefore, I’ll take his statement as his personal opinion only,” he added.

He was commenting on Bung’s recent statement that there was no way for Sabah and Sarawak to get 20% oil royalty from Putrajaya.

Sarawak minister says Petronas asset sale would complicate matters

February 5, 2020

Dateline 2019-12-12, Malay Mail:

A Sarawak minister today warned that existing disputes will become more complicated if Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) sold assets to oil-producing states such as Sarawak without resolving them.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said such sales should only be decided after ending negotiations on disputes involving the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) and the Territorial Sea Act 2012 (TSA).

“We are still having doubts on the legitimacy of the PDA which empowers Petronas the rights over oil and resources found within the territorial waters of Sarawak and Sabah,” he told reporters after receiving High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court gowns from former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Sulong Matjeraie on behalf of the Sarawak Museum.

Petronas’ statement arrogant, insensitive, says Abdul Karim

Dateline 2018-07-04, Borneo Post:

The recent press statement from Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) is described as a strongly-worded statement that is both arrogant and insensitive.

In the statement, Petronas maintains its claim over Sarawak’s oil and gas resources; that it has exclusive ownership of the petroleum resources in Malaysia, and that it is the sole regulator of the upstream sector in the country.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youths and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the statement did not bode well with Sarawak and its people, and wondered if this was a new form of colonisation.

Sarawak hails move to clarify rights over oil

Dateline 2018-06-05, FMT:

A Sarawak minister has welcomed Petronas’ move to let the Federal Court settle the issue of ownership of petroleum resources in the country.

“It’s good that Petronas is finally taking the matter to court for clarification so that Sarawak and Malaya can revisit what they negotiated and agreed to when they formed Malaysia,” said Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the state minister for tourism, arts, culture, youth and sports.

“As far as Sarawak is concerned, resources within the state’s territory, which includes its continental shelf, belong to the state and require the state’s permission to extract.”
