PublicInvest: Venezuela tensions unlikely to affect Malaysia’s O&G, “Neutral” maintained

KUALA LUMPUR: Public Investment Bank Bhd (PublicInvest) has reiterated its “Neutral” stance on Malaysia’s oil and gas (O&G) sector and maintained its Brent crude forecast at an average of US$60 per barrel for 2026, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Venezuela.

The investment bank said developments in Venezuela are largely “sentiment noise” and not a fundamental driver for Malaysian producers and service providers. It added that President Donald Trump’s renewed pledge to boost US crude output is also expected to have minimal impact on local O&G players.


Vantris Energy secures RM1.4 bil offshore jobs from PETRONAS Carigali

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 7): Vantris Energy Bhd formerly Sapura Energy Bhd, has secured two work orders from PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd worth a combined RM1.4 billion for offshore transportation and installation works.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday, the group said the work orders were awarded to its wholly owned unit Sapura Offshore Sdn Bhd, under an existing contract.


AirBorneo to look into fuel supply contracts with oil companies

PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak government is looking into contracts or memoranda of understanding with oil companies in a bid to lower state-owned AirBorneo’s operating costs.

Sarawak transport minister Lee Kim Shin said fuel is one of the largest cost components in airline operations, The Borneo Post reported.


Sabah: Sabah uses microalgae biomass for renewable energy generation

Sabah is tapping microalgae to support the state’s green energy goals under the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040, which aims to achieve over 50% renewable energy capacity by 2035 and 80% by 2050.

In July, the Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct (SAIP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CCE Power Holdings Sdn Bhd to develop a microalgae biomass power plant utilising microalgae as feedstock to produce crude algae oil for biofuel and generate green energy in Kimanis, Sabah.


Helium gas cylinder explosion damages two stalls, three cars at Kajang food court

KAJANG: Two stalls were severely damaged and three vehicles suffered various damages after a helium gas cylinder exploded at a food court in Sungai Ramal here today.

The incident occurred at about 12 noon and involved a helium cylinder used for inflating balloons.

Japan’s Kaneka breaks ground on first biomass steam plant in Malaysia

Japan’s petrochemical major Kaneka broke ground on its first biomass steam plant in Malaysia on Sept. 11, in partnership with local renewable developer BAC Renewable Energy (BACRE).

The facility is scheduled to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to cut 30,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, supporting Kaneka (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s progress toward its 2050 net-zero target.


Malaysia on track to achieve renewable energy capacity

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is now on a solid track to achieve 40% renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2035 and 70% by 2050 under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said Malaysia’s RE capacity has so far reached 30% led by solar energy which contributes more than 5,000 megawatts.

“The next step is to decarbonise the electricity sector, including Malaysia’s bold commitment to reduce coal capacity by 50% by 2035 and completely phase out coal-fired power plants by 2044.


Luas confirms palm oil residue spill off Sungai Gombak

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has confirmed a palm oil residue spill following an accident between a palm oil tanker and fuel tanker at Km37.1 on the Karak Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Luas said following the accident at around 8am, it had been communicating with highway concessionaire AFA Prime Bhd for immediate action to contain the pollutants.

Gas Malaysia Energy Advance seals 15-year energy supply agreement with FGV IFFCO

GAS Malaysia Energy Advance Sdn Bhd (GMEA), a joint venture entity between Gas Malaysia Berhad and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation, has formalised a 15-year Energy Supply Agreement (ESA) with FGV IFFCO Sdn Bhd (FISB). 

The official signing ceremony took place on Aug 27, 2025 at the Glenmarie Hotel and Golf Resort and was attended by representatives from both organisations.
