Three more firms shortlisted to bid for Newfield assets

October 22, 2013

Now, since the head of PETROFAC is in charge of Vestigo, any ideas who’s the winner among the contenders?

Dateline 2013-08-26, The Star:

SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd, Talisman and Petrofac have been shortlisted for the second round of Newfield Exploration Co’s oil and gas assets in Malaysia and China, said sources close to the deal.

Last week, Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd confirmed that it had been shortlisted for this two-round bidding process, where the second-round bids are expected to be submitted by Sept 26. The source added that the results for the winning bidder should be known by year-end. Goldman Sachs Group Inc is the investment banker mandated to manage this bidding process. It would appear that only a handful of companies out of the 65 companies that had initially expressed interest for Newfield’s assets worth some US$1.7bil have been selected for the second round.

KOTA KINABALU: Canada-based oil and gas company, Talisman Malaysia, is in Sabah to stay.

Seeing the vast potential here, its senior vice-president and country manager Ron Aston said they also realised that the Sabah blocks as an exciting new growth area.

“We have committed an investment plan of USD1 billion (about RM3.28 billion) towards the various operational activities in the state’s operations, both near and long terms.

“In Malaysia, we have been operating successfully for over 15 years with much growth to come. Our presence into Sabah began in 2009 when we were awarded offshore blocks SB309 and SB310 by Petronas with a 70 per cent interest.

Malaysia Country Report: Mission 2017

October 19, 2013

From Asean Legal Business, dateline 2013-07-01:

Is Malaysia back as a regional oil-and-gas powerhouse? The numbers certainly suggest so. On the back of a number of government initiatives, developments in infrastructure and technologies, and significant private sector investments, the country’s oil and gas sector produced 1.69 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), up from 1.64 million boe/d during the same period last year. And Reuters says that a $30 billion push to find more oil and gas is also paying off [see box], with domestic crude output bouncing back from a recent 20-year low, and natural gas production on track to hit a record high before the end of the decade.

No price cut when global oil prices slumped, so why increase now, PKR asks

October 18, 2013

Dateline 2013-09-03, The Malaysian Insider:

With world oil prices on the downward trend since April 2011, PKR today slammed Putrajaya’s move to raise RON95 and diesel prices by 20 sen.

“Before this, Barisan Nasional kept giving the excuse that they have no choice but to increase petrol and diesel prices due to escalating world crude oil prices.

“But since April 2011, the world crude oil prices have been recording a decrease,” PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

Oil price hike: Call for improvement in public transport service

October 17, 2013

Dateline 2013-09-02, The Malay Mail (there’s a blast from the past):

The government should take drastic action to improve public transport service to reduce the burden of consumers with the increase in the price of RON95 and diesel, effective midnight tonight.

Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) secretary-general, Datuk Dr Maamor Osman, said several mechanisms could help to lighter consumers’ burden as a result of the oil price increase.

“We understand that the government’s move is to reduce subsidy, but in this slow economic situation, with no increase in income, it will burden the low income earners.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on The Engineering of Oil Production

October 16, 2013

This is a shout out for the IEM. I’m giving a talk (shameless self promotion) with my Technical Division on 19th October, 2013. It’ll be at 8:30 am (makan-makan at 8:00) at Wisma IEM.

This presentation will provide a quick introduction into the engineering of oil production. It will start with an introduction to important oil properties to consider when producing an oilfield, and how this data is used. It then moves to a generic offshore production facility, pointing out the salient points, design considerations and major equipment used in oil production. It closes out with a quick look at downstream facilities.

Registration for the above talk may be done here, and the flyers may be picked up here.

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

October 16, 2013

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 30th October, 2013. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Wata has 16 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, in both design and operations.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed has urged the people to be patient over the fuel price hike and understand the rationale for the government’s move to reduce subsidies to avert a more serious consequences to the country in future.

“The people should be patient and understand what we are doing is good for the people and the country. If we continue with the subsidies, it will have a more serious impact on our country,” he said.
