Tough year ahead for Malaysia’s oil and gas sector

May 12, 2015

Can I adopt a godfather, please?

Dateline 2015-04-07, Malay Mail:

Malaysia’s oil and gas (O&G) sector’s mergers and acquisitions (M&As) this year are expected to fall slightly to US$5 billion (RM18 billion) from US$5.7 billion last year.

Deloitte Malaysia Energy and Resources Leader, Nizar Najib, said some firms may have cashed out to launch acquisitions but the others may not have the means to undertake M&As due to depletion in their order books.

“The acquisitions would likely be more domestic-focused as Malaysian firms were interested to consolidate locally,” he told Bernama at the Deloitte South-East Asia Oil and Gas Summit 2015 here today.

Saturday Star 2015-05-09– Job Opportunities

May 11, 2015

Happy Whistleblower Week. As a reminder, if you have evidence that a foreign worker is executing engineering responsibilities without registering as a Professional Engineer, you can submit a complaint to the BEM here. Or to me, where I will forward to the BEM. Your whistle blowing anonymity is assured.

Also, Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Or get the Young Turks series (all 4 books). Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me.

  • An associate of mine is looking for a well completion engineer, 10 years in the position (no, not position 23b, second variant). Send your CV to me. As per my Facebook posting, idiotic applications, straight to /dev/null.
  • An associate of mine is looking for a technical safety part-time adviser. Needs to be needle sharp with respect to QRAs, and HSE safety cases. A calm demeanor to handle nonsensical questions from young engineers helps as well. Either that, or a drinking problem.
  • An associate of mine is looking for an offshore structural engineer, senior engineer, 5+ years experience, permanent post. Relevant applications + bribery fee can be sent to me, not relevant applications get posted to facepalm.com.
  • An associate of mine is looking for a Senior process engineer, more than 5 yr experience in oil and gas industry, for assignment at PPMSB for approximately 7 months. Tentative duration is to start mid May, ends on 31 Dec. Again, I am running a bribery bid.
  • Hess is still looking for a measurement and allocation engineer (2 I believe). I saw that the ITB is still floating around. If you want me, you know where to find me. Not Celebrity Fitness, if you need a hint.
  • Qatar Petroleum is looking for electrical engineers, instrument engineer, field production supervisor. Apply here or visit the website.

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

Food choice of the week? Go visit the mee bandung / asam pedas stall in front of the Petaling Jaya Police Station (don’t ask).

Dateline 2015-04-07, Offshore Engineer:

Japanese exploration firm JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration’s Malaysia subsidiary is planning two further exploration wells offshore Malaysia after confirming a deepwater oil discovery.

The Bestari-1 exploration well, the first drilled in Deepwater Block R (the Block), found 70m of oil bearing sands across multiple Miocene-aged formation horizons.

The Block, offshore Sabah, East Malaysia, covers 672sq km in 100-1400m water depth, in an area where the Kikeh and the Gumusut-Kakap oil fields were discovered.

Reservoir depth ranges from 1860-2702m below sea level and preliminary wireline evaluation highlighted good reservoir properties, said JX Nippon.

Marketing Rounds – PCSB Side business

May 6, 2015

Ever since the leaked letter about PCSB staff pay cuts (thrust and counter news articles), I assume the Management eventually had to find other income pipelines.

Disclaimer: I did not freaking set up this shot.

IEM Shout Out – Strategic Management Thinking Process

May 6, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 9th May by Ir. Benjamin Ng Chong Jin. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 8:30) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

This talk draws attention to the fuel diversification in a power market (e.g. Malaysia) and the different fuels which determine the fuel specific electricity tariff. The talk aims to shed lights on how a regulated market’s electricity tariff is being computed with respect to the different type of power plant technologies from oil-fired power plant to combined-cycle power plant to coal-fired power plant. Each power plant technology has its advantages in supporting the electricity grid and also its drawbacks. This will be elaborated in the talk.

Ir. Benjamin Ng Chong Jin is the Loss Prevention Consultant at FM Global Insurance specializing in power generation market. He has been involved in numerous power plants development from conceptualizing, financial modeling, tendering and design evaluation when he was in one of the IPP’s in Malaysia. He has been technically trained in a reputable Gas Turbine manufacturer and has good commissioning experiences. Ir. Benjamin Ng holds a Bachelor (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2003. He is also a Professional Engineer (Mechanical) registered with BEM, a Corporate Member of IEM and a certified accountant with ACCA.

Shout Out – One-Day Seminar On Drilling Engineering

May 5, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 19th May, 2015. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 6.5 CPD hours, presented by Ir. Razak Yakob.

Ir. (you gotta stress the Ir.) Hj. (even worse, you gotta spell it out) Razak Yakob has been in the oil and gas industry for 19 years working for companies such as ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Talisman Energy, Petronas Carigali and EnQuest/Uzma Engineering. His core expertise is in Drilling Engineering with the working experience spans from development and exploration, technical support, training, finance and consultancy. As a consultant, he has worked in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Algeria and others. Currently, he is an independent consultant. He was a graduate of Colorado School of Mines in the United States with a degree majoring in Petroleum Engineering and a minor in Mechanical Design.

Drilling discipline in the oil and gas industry tends to be seen as the hard-core engineering and operations in the hostile environment that many potential engineers avoid tapping into. This one-day overview course shall try to answer some of the questions that many people have, such as how is the drilling operations conducted, what is it like to be a drilling engineer and those jargons – what are they talking about? The design process explanation shall take you from the Conceptual Design, Detailed Design and Final Design stages. Some highlights of the course are designing the well trajectory, directional design, casing design, drilling fluids formulation, cementing formulation, perforation, securing and completing the well to ensure that production (oil & gas) reaches the surface safely. This course has been offered by IEM annually since 2008.

Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.
