Shell to cut 1,300 jobs in Malaysia over two years

November 3, 2015

On the tail of the previous article, Shell continues stride with deepwater projects

Dateline 2015-09-29, Fuelfix:

Royal Dutch Shell’s oil unit in Malaysia said it will cut 1,300 jobs, or about 20 percent of its Malaysian workforce, over the next two years as it restructures itself.

Shell Malaysia said Tuesday it is trying to become a more efficient company but gave few details beyond disclosing the coming staff reductions. It said it has made “adjustments” to its upstream portfolio but didn’t elaborate.

“Shell Malaysia is preparing itself to be more competitive in a low oil price environment,” Shell Malaysia Chairman Iain Lo said in a written statement. “Continuing business as usual is not sustainable. We are taking difficult, but necessary action.”

Saturday Star 2015-10-31– Job Opportunities

November 2, 2015

Happy Rain Week. Donate to your favourite charity (me), buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Or get the Young Turks series (all 4 books). Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me, my camera dive case flooded, and I need a new replacement. Heck, if you want to send me a Canon 5D Mk III plus dive case, I will not say no.

  • I’m looking for jobs for 1Q2016. Send me your POs.
  • I haven’t seen Qatar Petroleum ads for a while. They are looking for a Diving supervisor (say what?), Lead Maintenance engineer, maintenance engineer, snr. instrument engineer, inspection engineer, communications & infrastructure engineer. Apply here or visit the website.
  • An associate of mine is looking for a technical safety part-time adviser. 2 Associates, actually. Needs to be needle sharp with respect to QRAs, and HSE safety cases. A calm demeanor to handle nonsensical questions from young engineers helps as well. Either that, or a drinking problem.
  • Nothing much in the news. Were you expecting jobs galore? Has The Star dropped out of favour? I see more job adverts on the facebook private groups.

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

Food choice of the week? Alfalfa.

Seen the Episode VII trailer? Booked the theater? If you say “What is episode Vii?”, I disown you.

During these trying times, perhaps you should focus on self improvement. The following are a good set of books to start automating your uncertainty budget tables.

Malaysia offered Russian nuclear energy expertise

November 1, 2015

Can you say ядерногоSovMalaysia?

Dateline 2015-10-28, Russia Beyond the Headlines:

Russia offered to extend its expertise in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, if Malaysia decided to develop its own nuclear program, Bernama reported on Friday.

“We will propose a very sophisticated and complex construction of a local nuclear program,” Russian Minister of Economic Development Alexei Ulyukayev told the news agency. “We can construct nuclear power generation stations. We can also organise training of local personnel because we believe the project can be managed by Malaysia itself.”

Ulyukayev also told Bernama that Russia could help Malaysia build its own nuclear power plant.

“In Asia, we are constructing infrastructure for these sectors in some countries and also delivering site support for them,” he told the news agency.

Shell continues stride with deepwater projects

This is on badly edited article. Libreoffice spellchecker offline?

Dateline 2015-09-26, Borneo Online:

The oil and gas (O&G) sector, as covered in last week’s feature ‘Volatilty in the O&G Market’, has experienced much instability of late with oil prices impacted by various ongoing factors.

This has not slowed oil and gas giant Shell plc (Shell) from continueing its stride in the local markets as it had

Any Sarawakian will know the Shell brand – it has been in Malaysia for 120 years, first making its mark in Miri. It was also in this country where Shell’s upstream industry actually first began, with the country’s first oil well discovered by Shell on Canada Hillm Miri back in 1910.

Since then, Shell’s upstream business has grown from strength to strength: from Sarawak to Sabah and back down to Bintulu, where a natural gas liquefaction venture was formed,

The abundance of gas also prompted the establishment of the world’s first commercial middle distillate synthesis – the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis plant – in Bintulu in 1993. As the first commercial Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant of its type, this allows Shell to sell ultra clean GTL products to the world.

From there, Shell eventually ventured into the deepwater industry offshore Sarawak.

IEM Shout Out – Half Day Course on Incorporating CDIO (TM) framework through Project based learning (PBL)

October 30, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a course on 27th November, presented by Ir Assoc. Prof. Dr. Satesh Namasivayam . It’ll be at 9am at Wisma IEM.

Ready to engineer. So it is said. But what is engineer and how do you engineer? What are the barriers to engineer and what are the key factors necessary to educate engineer? How to think like an engineer? Incorporating CDIOTM framework through Project based learning (PBL) can be one of the solutions. The CDIOTM initiative has been developing as more collaborators from all over the globe are taking this initiative as a base for their educational institutions adopting what so-called the “active learning” policy which includes, but not limited to, a complete system of a well-designed syllabus covering the skills and characteristics of graduating engineers.

Throughout CDIOTM phases, the learning process has changed from passive-note taking to more active-project-based education. This half-day workshop is designed with three (3) objectives as follows

  • Introduce participants to Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate initiative
  • Integrate CDIO initiative in curriculum to address complex, value added engineering products, processes, systems in modern and team-based environment;
  • Review the know-how of conceiving, designing, implementing and operating complex engineering systems of appropriate complexity.

Ir Assoc Prof Dr. Satesh Namasivayam BEng (1st Class Hons) PhD (London) FIMechE MIEM CEng PEng CIT (HRDF) is a Chartered and Professional Mechanical Engineer, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Dean from the School of Engineering at Taylor’s University, Malaysia.

You can register here, and get the flyer here.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Postgraduate Studies and Research Opportunities for Chemical Engineers and Professionals

October 29, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 5th November, 2015 by Dr. Hii. It’ll be at 5:30 pm. Since the oil & gas market seems to be slowing down for the next 2 years, this might be a good place to park your glutus maximus.

Are you currently thinking about doing a postgraduate degree? Are you planning to switch your career to academic teaching? Do you like doing research to strengthen your expertise/research area? Currently, there are various postgraduate (PG) degree programs (PhD, EngD, MSc, MRes, MPhil, etc.) available in the market. Some PG degrees can be done by fulltime or part time basis, and can even be done via distance learning. There are so many options available and the question is, how to choose the right one? The aim of this talk is to provide a “beginners guide” to PG degree for chemical engineers/working professionals from the engineering industry. The talk will present what are the options currently available especially for those that do not wish to do it full time. The costs and time frame involved will also be presented. Career choice upon completion of a PG degree will also be presented.

Dr. Hii completed his BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (1996), his MSc in Food Processing and Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia (2004), and his PhD (Chemical Engineering) at The University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus (2010). He joined UNMC as academic staff since August 2010 at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. Prior to joining UNMC, he worked as a Senior Research Officer in Cocoa Downstream Research Center, Malaysian Cocoa Board (1997 – 2007). Currently, he is the Academic Champion for the Center of Food and Bio-product Processing and Deputy Head of the Manufacturing and Industrial Processes research division. He is also advisor to UNMC-IEM Student Chapter.

Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

Rightsizing in the oil and gas industry

October 27, 2015

Rightsizing – IGL Services issues Rm3M worth of paid invoices. Wrongsizing – We only get Rm2.9M.

Send us your tales of rightsizing woes.

Dateline 2015-09-26, The Star:

THE slide in global crude oil prices has left a trail of casualties in its wake.

Oil companies and governments that rely on the price of crude oil for profit and revenue have been hurt by plunging receipts from lower crude oil prices.

For countries dependent on commodities such as crude oil, the effect cuts deeper. Their currencies have felt the brunt from the weaker crude oil prices and it is this group of countries that have a reliance on commodities that have seen the biggest depreciation against the US dollar compared with oil importing countries.

While the macro picture hogs the headlines and generates most of the chatter, the real micro cost of plunging crude oil prices has been felt by employment in the sector.

Many oil majors have announced job cuts to manage costs that had spiralled upwards during the boom days in the industry. Oil majors now have resorted to slashing their workforce amid the biggest downturn in the industry for decades.
