PETRONAS Gas registers net profit of RM460mil

PETRONAS Gas Bhd has registered a net profit of RM463.24 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 3.6 per cent higher from RM447.17 million in the same period a year ago on higher fuel gas price revision.

Its revenue increased 3.54 per cent to RM1.17 billion in the quarter from RM1.13 billion in the corresponding period a year ago.

The company said the higher revenue was mainly contributed by higher utilities revenue in tandem with higher offtake by customers as well as higher sales prices in line with fuel gas price revision coupled with higher regasification revenue attributed to higher storage fees.

“Profit before taxation however was slightly lower by RM1.7 million mainly due to higher operating costs attributed to one-off staff costs adjustment and depreciation expense in line with completion of major capital projects.

CREC to build oil terminal at Asia Petroleum Hub

China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) has been awarded a contract worth US$400mil (RM1.8bil) for the construction of the oil terminal of the just-revived Asia Petroleum Hub (APH).

Smart Crest Sdn Bhd, which has an oil terminal at Westport, signed a framework agreement to award the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) to CREC here yesterday.

At the signing ceremony, Smart Crest’s chief executive officer Datuk Lim Kian Boon said the contract is worth US$400mil and Fajarbaru Builder Sdn Bhd will be the local joint venture partner in-charge of civil works.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-07 Three Day Course on “Air Conditioning Fundamentals and Basic System Design (HVAC)”

My technical division will be hosting a 3 day  course on the 3rd to 5th July, 2017. It is worth 18 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. CHUA KENG SENG.

This fundamental course is designed to give you the understanding of the essential theories and the working principles of air conditioning system. It will also show you how to apply them in practice for the proper operation, energy saving and troubleshooting of the air conditioning system.  It also includes an overview of different types of air conditioning systems and their applications.  The second part of the course will equip you with the capability of designing air conditioning systems in cooling capacity calculation, air duct design and chilled water piping design.

Ir. CHUA KENG SENG, B.E. (Hons), MIEM, P.Eng, MASHRAE, MIMM, CCP, graduated from the University of Malaya in 1974. Qualified as a Professional Engineer, he worked with Carrier Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., first as the Service Manager and then as Engineering Manager for about 10 years. During the next 25 years, he operated his own companies in contracting, maintenance and also in consultancy business. He has wide experience in the design, installation, and troubleshooting on various types of systems and also in project management. He was in the design and project management team which implemented the Putrajaya Precinct 2 District Cooling Plant which has a capacity of 30,000 cooling tons. Ir. Chua has also been involved in many training programmes. He lectured air conditioning design in the Mechanical Faculty of University Malaya between 1978 and 1984 as well as in Monash University for the 3 years. Besides he had been invited to deliver lectures and presentations in the University Technology Malaysia, University Technology Petronas, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and conducted in-house training for some Corporate Companies.

Malaysia’s Sapura Energy says interest in upstream projects picking up

Sapura Energy Berhad , Malaysia’s largest oil and gas service provider, said it was beginning to see interest building in upstream projects following sharp rollbacks in recent years from lower oil prices.

“Projects that were on hold before are starting to be looked at again (globally),” Sapura Chief Executive Shahril Shamsuddin told Reuters on the sidelines of the Asia Oil & Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

“It’s going to take time for the decisions to come through. It would take about 10-15 months before we could see projects come online again,” he said.

Shahril attributed the increase in interest to the recovery in oil prices and the need to replenish a natural drop in reserves.

Brent crude prices have recovered about 80 percent from 12-year lows hit early in 2016, although they are still at less than half the levels of mid-2014 due to a supply glut, and retreated back below $50 at the end of last week.

Malaysia’s Petronas says will support extension of oil output cuts

Malaysian state-owned oil firm Petroliam Nasional Berhad [PETR.UL] will support any extension of oil output cuts by OPEC and non-OPEC producers, its chief executive said on Monday. Petronas, as the company is known, announced last year that it would cut its oil output by up to 20,000 barrels per day (bpd) as part of Malaysia’s commitment to reduce supply following an agreement between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC producers. “If there is extension of the arrangement, of course we are committed to continue with the same production cut,” Petronas Chief Executive Officer Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin told reporters at the Asia Oil & Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-06 Talk On Issues of Vibration From Blasting

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 10th June, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points (why is it shown as 0 on the web page?), and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Hj Look Keman bin Sahari.

Blasting of rock using explosives is a necessity when other rock breaking equipment such as rock breakers, chemical or any other means could not do so. Rock blasting is actually the cheapest mean to break rock, to fragment rock or to remove rock to a design level such as road, building foundation, sump etc. in construction work. However, the use of explosives produces ground and air vibration which may cause damage to structure and annoyance issues to the public. There are many complains from the public of alleged cracks on the walls, ceiling etc. resulted from this blasting work. There are also fears from the public that the use of explosives at construction site may endanger the people and properties nearby. Blast monitoring using seismograph is actually a necessity and the authority had imposed a condition that vibration from blasting must not exceed certain limit that will minimise annoyance and reduces any risk of damage to structure.

Ir. Hj Look Keman bin Sahari graduated from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland in mining engineering in 1979 and served as engineer at Mines Department (now Jabatan Mineral dan Geoscience) from 1979 to 1996. He started his career as mining geotechnical engineer specialising in landslide investigation at Pusat Penyelidekan Mineral, Ipoh and later as Inspector of Mines serving Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. In 1990 he further his studies at Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University, England and earned M.Sc in Explosives Ordnance Engineering. He had also attended many rock blasting courses in mining, quarrying and tunneling locally and overseas. He had given lectures on the subject at IEM.

From 1996, he works as independent consultant engineer specialising in the use explosives in mining quarrying and construction work. He also specialises in blast monitoring work. He is a committee member of IEM Training Board and Oil & Gas and Mining Technical Division. He is Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate, Fellow of IEM, Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying and a Member of International Society of Explosive Engineers, USA

With the advent of advanced technologies, the world is fast becoming a truly borderless world. These technologies will see the development of mega infrastructure projects that will be a game changer. Amongst them: OBOR – the Global Landbridge, and OTEC – Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, which will see Hydrogen as the Fuel for the Future.

The talk will be in three parts:
Using the Engineering Finance Methodology in Creating “Cost Efficient” Projects to be at Par with International Players

OBOR: Global Landbridge the Global Infrastructure Projects That Will Be a Game Changer for Future Generations – How Will it Affect the Malaysian Economics

OTEC: Fuel for Future Generations – Replacing Fossil Fuel as a Low Carbon Fuel

Understanding Project Management methodology is a crucial aspect before applying the Engineering Finance methodology in (re)structuring the project and businesses. Different mind-sets are required at different stages of implementing projects; let it be the business development stage, construction stage or the O&M stage. This is a multi-discipline approach.

Ir. Prof. (B) Dr. Maulud Abdul Latif obtained his Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Engineering Finance from UTM/University of Warwick. He also holds an MBA Finance from the University of Queensland Business School, a B. Sc. (Hons) in Mining Engineering from the University of Wales and a Diploma in Mechanical Eng. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. In addition, he holds the Dredgemaster Certificate of Competency and is a member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and the Institute of Mineral Engineers.

He started his career in Malaysia Mining Corporation (1977) and has an extensive experience in project feasibility studies (technical, marketing and finance) and mine management. Between 1984 and 1992, he worked with various reputable organizations including with Permodalan Nasional Berhad and the Ministry of Finance (as Corporate Adviser to the Minister of Finance Incorporated). He has acquired vast corporate experience not only in project viability but also in corporate restructuring and turnaround. He was also involved in several privatization projects.
