IEM Shout Out – 2017-08 One-Day Course on One-Day Course on “The Design of Oil & Gas Fixed Offshore Structure”

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day  course on the 12th August, 2017. It is worth 6 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Assoc. Professor Dr Venkatesh Rajagopalan (Venkat)

The first offshore structure was built to extract oil in the 1930s. Since then, there are now more than 1000 offshore structures worldwide, extracting oil & gas under the ground to meet the world demands.  This one-day course will provide the audience with the basic principles in designing these fixed offshore structures.  It will be presented in a way that is comprehensible to the engineers who are with or without the oil and gas background.
The course will try to address some of the engineering issues that have to be considered when designing an offshore structure. Some of these issues are listed below:
– The environmental loads (such as wave and wind) and accidental loads (such as blast and fire) that the structure has to face throughout its design life.
– How the structure will be fabricated, transported and then installed at its offshore location.
– Technical requirements from the contemporary design codes and third-party certifications.
– The types of analysis that need to be carried out to ensure the structure can meet the above challenges.

Assoc. Professor Dr Venkatesh Rajagopalan (Venkat) graduated from Annamalai University, India with a degree in Structural Engineering in 1989.  He then obtained a post graduate degree in Engineering Management and Post-Doctoral in Structural Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has more than 26 years of working experience in various roles.

He is currently a Senior Principal Structural Engineer at McDermott Malaysia. He has presented talks at various symposiums in India, Singapore and Australia on Design on Offshore structural related topics.

Energy Majors Eye A $1B Stake In Malaysian NatGas Asset

Malaysia’s state oil firm Petronas has pushed a plan to sell a US$1-billion stake in a local offshore gas project to the next round of bidding expected to attract international majors including Shell and ExxonMobil, Reuters reported on Monday, citing four people familiar with the plan.

Back in February, Petronas was reportedly planning on selling an up to 49-percent stake in the SK316 offshore gas block in the Sarawak state. A portion of the funds earned from the new sale could be set aside for the future of the Kasawari field, which government estimates say could hold three trillion cubic feet of recoverable hydrocarbons.

This two day course is designed to help you develop skills that will enhance your vendors and subcontractors delivery to your project and reaching out to them effectively. This course will intersperse with Agile approach, whereby engineers will act as facilitator and to ensure that the collaboration between the business (in our case project) and the vendors & subcontractors is effective.

As a great deal of class time will be spent in a variety of interactive formats, active participation is essential.

Ir. Danaraj Chandrasegaran P.Eng MIEM CEng MIMechE. He is a Chartered Engineer and has honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Technology Malaysia. He also holds a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Malaya. He also presently a committee member with The Institution of Engineers Malaysia and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK) Malaysia Chapter.

Since starting his career as a Mechanical Engineer, Ir. Danaraj has had a varied service; both in front line project execution as well as in technical, training, and management functions. His career has a diverse outlook on project execution ranging from building construction, marine, mining and energy industry; as a mechanical engineer. He has worked on several large scale projects worldwide such as Shell Malikai TLP and Barzan Offshore Project. In addition, had delivered many projects successfully collaborating with vendors and subcontractors alike.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-08 Precision Engineering For Higher Value-Added Industrial Products

My technical division will be hosting a half day seminar on the 5th August, 2017. It is worth 3 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Professor R. C. T. Lee.

In this seminar, we shall first emphasize the importance of industry to economy of a nation.  We will then point out that Taiwan is facing tough challenging from China and we must upgrade our industry to the “precision industry”.  By precision industry, we mean products in such an industry are of high specification.   In other words, ordinary turn key industries will not survive in Taiwan at all.  But, to reach the sophisticated state, we must build a solid foundation on basic industrial technologies.  These technologies include mixing and dispersing, separation and purification, machine design, electronic circuit design, material science, grinding technology, soldering technology, software, control and so on.  We will present many cases to show how these basic industrial technologies help us produce industrial products with high added values.

Professor R. C. T. Lee obtained his B. S. degree in electrical engineering from the National Taiwan University in 1961, M. S, degree in electrical engineering from University of California at Berkeley in 1963 and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and computer science, also from U. C. Berkeley in 1967.  He worked in National Institutes of Health and Naval Research Laboratory in U.S.A. from 1967 to 1975. He returned to Taiwan in 1975 and was appointed a professor in the National Tsing Hua University.  Later, he was the President of Providence University as well as the President of National Chi-nan University.  Professor Lee formally retired in 2007.  Then he served as a senior adviser of the President for seven years.  He managed to persuade the Taiwanese government to pay attention to the basic industrial technologies, founded the Taiwan Society for Precision Engineering in 2014 and served as the chairman of the society for two years.

Training a nuclear-ready workforce

Efforts at building local human capital continues as such expertise cannot be developed overnight, or fast-tracked, if the country wants its nuclear efforts to be sustainable.

LIKE the rest of its regional peers such as the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam, Malaysia has been drawn to the benefits of nuclear energy for the past few decades.

Under the leadership of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Malaysia announced in June 2009 that it would seriously look at nuclear power as one of the options to diversify the country’s sources of energy, which is heavily reliant on fossil fuels like coal (mostly imported) and natural gas (partly imported in the form of liquefied natural gas or LNG).

Following this, the country immediately embarked on a drive to send promising students to further their studies in countries that are already nuclear-powered, such as Britain, France, Japan, the United States, and South Korea.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-07 Talk On Implementation of conceive-design-implement-operate (CDIO TM) framework for Chemical Engineering challenges

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 26th July, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The talk will be presented by Ir. Dr. Chong.

The conceive – design – implement – operate (CDIOTM) framework is implemented by educators to generate graduates, who are able to tackle complex engineering challenges. A set of 12 standards define this framework and how to implement it are useful for chemical engineers. Chemical engineers from the industry will be able to develop sustainable solutions using the structured framework. Several chemical engineering innovative projects are completed using the CDIOTM framework will be shared during the talk.

Medical Gas Piping System (MGPS) is required to deliver medical gasses supply to patients and surgical tools in hospitals. The medical gasses include oxygen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, Entonox, medical vacuum, anesthetic gas scavenging system, medical and surgical air. Since the gasses are delivered direct to patients the quality and reliability of the system is very important to ensure the live of the patients and the safety of the facilities.

Ir. Dr. Chong obtained his BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) in 2007 and  PhD in Engineering from University of Nottingham. He also is a Chartered Engineer in UK and a Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers, Malaysia. He received President Award of Excellent from IEM for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. He also bagged the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award as ‘Taylor’s Most Cited Academic 2015’. His scholarly activities encompass leading research projects, spearheading academic collaboration with leading academic institution both in Malaysia and in the world. In his brief academic career, he published more than 50  international journals, conferences papers, technical bulletin/proceedings and book chapters. He is one of the CDIOTM leaders in Asia Region. His academic research interest is in the area of drying technology, energy, health and engineering education.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-07 Talk On A Comparative Study: Offshore Facilities Load Out Methodology

aMy technical division will be hosting a talk on the 25th July, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points (why is it shown as 0 on the web page?), and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Hj. Ahmad Khairiri.

The presentation will share the author’s experience in load out activities and its’ various methodologies. Load-out is the process of transferring offshore structure from fabrication yard onto the transportation barge/vessel and the process of structure’s sea fastening prior to sail away. The load-out process generates load-out forces on the structure as it moves from the fabrication yard to the barge.  Most often, these activities are performed at the fabrication yard which is located near the sea area.

Ir. Hj. Ahmad Khairiri is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom, and a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Currently, he is with Global Project Delivery, Project Delivery & Technology Division of PETRONAS. Responsible in ensuring the governance of onshore construction and fabrication work. Recently completed task include the load-out activities of F12, Angsi-Besar and Bardegg jackets and topsides. Previously, he was responsible to ensure the successful completion of the offshore installation hook up work for PETRONAS first floating LNG, PFLNG SATU Project. He was with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, OGP Technical Services Sdn Bhd and PETRONAS Gas Bhd involving in various project locally and globally.
