Dateline 2011-04-21:
Two helicopter service providers today signed a contract with a total value of RM7.2 billion to provide offshore helicopter service to five leading oil and gas (O&G) companies in Malaysia.
Westar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd will provide nine helicopters in a deal worth RM4.2 billion to Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc, Newfield (Malaysia) Inc, Petrofac (Malaysia-PM304) Ltd and Talisman (Malaysia) Ltd.
Meanwhile, MHS Aviation Bhd, a subsidiary of Boustead Holdings Bhd, sealed the remaining RM3 billion contract to provide five helicopters to Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc and Newfield Peninsular Malaysia Inc.
The contract is valid for a period of 10 years.

The Government will soon establish the Malaysia Petroleum Resource Corp (MPRC) to spur the development of the country’s oil and gas sector.
MPRC interim chief executive officer Dr Shahreen Madros said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would announce details of the agency soon.
“We are looking at human capital requirement, marketing portion and how we can promote the industry further,” he told reporters.

Oil- and gas-producing Sabah is not the poorest state in the country, according to the Ministry of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing.
In refuting the findings of the World Bank Report which noted that 40% of the country’s poor were sited in Sabah, minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said it was Terengganu which had the highest number of poor.
He said Terengganu had the highest number of families falling into the three cateogry of “hardcore poor, poor and near poor” with 12,193 families.

Can anyone explain why there was a “late notice” to PETRONAS’s customers?

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) says Petronas’ natural gas upstream facilities shutdown will lead to several manufacturing companies having to reduce their gas consumption significantly from March 30 to April 12 and April 29 to May 10.
While FMM said the significant reduction of gas supply to both the power sector and manufacturers was unavoidable due to the necessity in carrying out major maintenance work at the upstream facilities, the late notification has caused anxiety among manufacturers and uncertainty for companies that have orders to meet.

And why aren’t there any “special clinics” held anywhere else?

The Malay Chamber of Commerce of Malaysia (MCCM) and Sabah Oil and Gas Contractors Association (SOGCA) together with Petronas organised a special clinic to assist its members to register with Petronas and obtain a Petronas licence, Thursday.
According to MCCM Sabah Chairman Datuk Awg Buhtamam Ag Mahmun, the special clinic is for Petronas and Samsung/Naim to register and assist local MCCM members in Sabah who are interested in entering the oil and gas industry in the State.
“This clinic is specially set up for members of the MMCC and SOGCA who are interested to be involved in this field.
“With the decision by Petronas to set up the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Sabah, we see many opportunities for local Sabah contractors.

MALAYSIA should not have any problem funding the extra subsidy cost due to higher oil prices but it could become a challenge if prices stayed too high for too long.
This would mean prices of about US$150 (RM454.5) a barrel, said Standard Chartered (StanChart) Bank economist Alvin Liew.
The government has pledged to absorb the extra subsidy from higher oil prices, although the subsidy bill could jump to more than RM14 billion if prices continue to rise.

The High Court here today allowed the federal government’s application to be an intervener in the suit filed by the Kelantan government against Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) over oil royalty.
High Court Judge Zabariah Mohd Yusof made the decision upon hearing submissions from both parties in chambers.
Counsel Tommy Thomas is representing Kelantan government, Cecil Abraham and Rishwant Singh for Petronas, and senior federal counsel Azizah Nawawi, from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, for the government.
With this decision, the federal government is to be part of the suit as the second defendant.
In the suit filed on Aug 30, last year, the Kelantan government named Petronas as the sole defendant.

PETRONAS is going to drop a Malaysian brand (Tapis) for a British one? Is this an imminent sign that Tapis will no longer be an oil production hub?

Malaysian state oil firm PETRONAS is expected to announce a new pricing formula soon for its crude based primarily on European bellwether Brent, dropping a decade-old marker once commonly used to price Asia-Pacific crude, industry sources said on Thursday.
The move would homogenise and simplify a fragmented pricing structure in Asia, user of a third of global crude, extending Brent’s influence as a cross-continent price marker beyond the 70 percent of world supplies that now use it as a reference.
