Three more firms shortlisted to bid for Newfield assets

October 22, 2013

Now, since the head of PETROFAC is in charge of Vestigo, any ideas who’s the winner among the contenders?

Dateline 2013-08-26, The Star:

SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd, Talisman and Petrofac have been shortlisted for the second round of Newfield Exploration Co’s oil and gas assets in Malaysia and China, said sources close to the deal.

Last week, Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd confirmed that it had been shortlisted for this two-round bidding process, where the second-round bids are expected to be submitted by Sept 26. The source added that the results for the winning bidder should be known by year-end. Goldman Sachs Group Inc is the investment banker mandated to manage this bidding process. It would appear that only a handful of companies out of the 65 companies that had initially expressed interest for Newfield’s assets worth some US$1.7bil have been selected for the second round.

KOTA KINABALU: Canada-based oil and gas company, Talisman Malaysia, is in Sabah to stay.

Seeing the vast potential here, its senior vice-president and country manager Ron Aston said they also realised that the Sabah blocks as an exciting new growth area.

“We have committed an investment plan of USD1 billion (about RM3.28 billion) towards the various operational activities in the state’s operations, both near and long terms.

“In Malaysia, we have been operating successfully for over 15 years with much growth to come. Our presence into Sabah began in 2009 when we were awarded offshore blocks SB309 and SB310 by Petronas with a 70 per cent interest.

Malaysia Country Report: Mission 2017

October 19, 2013

From Asean Legal Business, dateline 2013-07-01:

Is Malaysia back as a regional oil-and-gas powerhouse? The numbers certainly suggest so. On the back of a number of government initiatives, developments in infrastructure and technologies, and significant private sector investments, the country’s oil and gas sector produced 1.69 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), up from 1.64 million boe/d during the same period last year. And Reuters says that a $30 billion push to find more oil and gas is also paying off [see box], with domestic crude output bouncing back from a recent 20-year low, and natural gas production on track to hit a record high before the end of the decade.

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

October 16, 2013

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 30th October, 2013. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Petronas sends tanker to pick up Nigeria LNG

October 12, 2013

Wonder when LNG will get off my radar? And I guess I better treat Nigerians better than I usually do.

Dateline 2013-08-26:

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas producer, is sending the Seri Bijaksana to load a spot cargo of liquefied natural gas in Nigeria, a company official said.

The shipment was sold last week as part of Nigeria LNG Ltd’s tender to sell two September-loading cargoes, according to the official, who asked not to be named because he isn’t authorized to speak to the media.

The tanker, which has a capacity of about 153,000 cubic meters, will arrive tomorrow at Nigeria LNG’s Bonny Island terminal, according to ship transmissions captured by IHS Fairplay on Bloomberg. Deliveries from Nigeria LNG, Africa’s biggest exporter of the fuel, resumed July 26 after the company lifted a force majeure.

Petronas Gas’ H2 outlook promising: HwangDBS

October 11, 2013

That’s because when gas is bought at market rates, the cost is passed on to the voters.

Dateline 2103-09-23, from Sin Chew Jit Poh:

HwangDBS Vickers Research, which maintained a buy call on Petronas Gas Bhd, expects a stronger second half this year led by the maiden contribution from the Melaka Regas plant and larger gas capital expenditure.

“We expect earnings to recover in the second half and management has guided for 3-5 per cent per annum earnings growth from the Regas plant, thus contributing to a promising outlook as Petronas planned to invest RM15 billion to find new gas to cater for the rising demand in Peninsular Malaysia,” it said in a research note today.

The company was also poised to secure overseas ventures given its strong balance sheet, HwangDBS said.

Hibiscus shortlisted in bid for Newfield assets

October 10, 2013

From SPAC to PSC in one fell swoop? This is how you break into the O&G big bucks.

Dateline 2013-08-21:

Malaysia’s first special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), has been short-listed for the second round of bidding for Newfield Exploration Co’s Malaysian and Chinese oil and gas fields valued at about US$1.2 billion (RM3.94 billion).

“It was only a handful of companies that made it to the second round from the 65 companies initially expressed interest, and we are one of them,” said Hibiscus MD Dr Kenneth Pereira.

Newfield, the fourth-largest oil producer in Malaysia, has an interest in about 3.3 million net acres offshore Malaysia and about 290,000 net acres offshore China but intends to sell these assets to focus on its North American operations.
