Petronas awards first production sharing contract for this year to 3 companies

August 28, 2016

Same topic as yesterday, a different slant on reporting, and an optimistic note.

Dateline 2016-07-22, Nikkei Asia Review:

Malaysia’s national oil company Petroliam Nasional, or Petronas, has awarded its first production sharing contract for 2016 to three oil companies to explore a hydrocarbon block off the Sarawak state.

Thailand’s PTT Exploration & Production will operate the SK410B oil field with joint venture partner Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company, Petronas said in a statement. PTT and the state-run KUFPEC will each hold a 42.5% stake in the block while Petronas will own the remainder 15% through a wholly owned unit.

“[The] signing not only marks Petronas’ first PSC award in 2016, but also welcomes PTT for their first operatorship in Malaysia,” said Petronas’ executive vice president for upstream Mohd Anuar Taib. “We are also pleased to collaborate with our long term partners, KUFPEC once again.”

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Applications of Forensic Metallurgy

August 27, 2016

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on Saturday, 3rd September, 2016, presented by Ir. Qua.

A large proportion of engineering components are metal-based and they will occasionally fail. Identification of the root causes of failure is essential to prevent further occurrences. Accurate identification very often requires the application of metallurgical methods of examination – forensic metallurgy. A summary of four case studies are presented, as follows:

Case A: Gas Turbine blade fatigue failure.
Case B: Stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel.
Case C: CO2 corrosion of linepipe from oil well.
Case D: Arc erosion of babbitt bearings.

As for the speaker:

Ir. Qua retired from the Engineering Faculty UM in 1999 as an Associate Professor; his term was extended as a senior Research fellow to 2002, after which he joined TNB Research Sdn. Bhd. as a Consultant. He is now Technical Director of Profmetal Sdn. Bhd.

Ir. Qua’s specializes in Failure Analysis and metallurgical problems and currently has undertaken more than 400 cases over a wide range of industries. He has recently co-authored a book that includes his past cases, titled. “Applied Engineering Failure Analysis”, published by CRC Press. At present Ir. Qua’s activities has been enlarged to include RBI (risk based inspection) of high temperature boiler steels in power plants, in particular creep degradation and remaining life estimation.

You can register for the talk here and download the flyer here.

PETRONAS Appoints Vestigo Operator of Malaysia’s Berantai RSC

August 25, 2016

Again, this is old news for those who are in the business. I didn’t even know there was a bidding exercise, if not I would have put in a bid.

Dateline 2016-07-21, Rigzone:

Malaysia’s national oil company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) appointed Wednesday its wholly-owned subsidiary Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd as operator of the Berantai field in Block PM 309, located about 93 miles (150 kilometers) offshore Terangganu, Malaysia, following the cessation of the Berantai Risk Service Contract (RSC) with the previous contractors announced July 11.

“The appointment of Vestigo is in line with PETRONAS’ effort to extend the economic life of the field and maximize the long term value of the asset,” the company said in a press release.

Vestigo specializes in the development and production of small and marginal fields and currently operates the Tembikai field under the Tembikai-Chenang Cluster Small Field RSC since June 2015.

The Bertantai field comprises a wellhead platform connected to a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which processes and exports gas to the neighboring Angsi field via a 18.6 mile (30 kilometer) subsea pipeline before being exported onshore. First gas from Berantai commenced in October 2012.

Malaysia’s first micro liquefied gas plant planned in KKIP

August 23, 2016

Interesting, this has not been on my radar.

Dateline 2016-07-18, Borneo Post:

State-owned Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd (SEC) is set to finalise a joint venture for the construction of the nation’s first micro liquefied gas plant in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP).

The plant will be owned by a subsidiary company of SEC through a joint venture which will be finalised soon.

SEC chief executive officer Dato Harun Hj Ismail told press members who attended his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house near here recently that they have already gotten the approval from their shareholders and the signing ceremony would be held once the joint venture terms are finalised accordingly.

He said he was very optimistic of the joint venture as it would mean being able to supply energy in the form of liquefied gas to a wider spectrum of consumer base in the west coast of Sabah.

Saturday Star 2016-08-20– Job Opportunities

August 22, 2016

Happy Back in the Office Week.

Donate to your favorite charity (me), buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Or get the Young Turks series (3 books until I can get YTP republished). Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me, my camera dive case flooded, and I need a new replacement. Heck, if you want to send me a Canon 5D Mk III plus dive case, I will not say no.

  • A mate of mine is looking for a MD/EngMan type person to help run his engineering company (the main business is skid manufacturing). He can’t handle the work volume, so you know that his oil & gas company is bucking the trend, and has a bright future ahead. If I know you, send your CV’s to me. If I don’t know you, send your CV along anyway, but note I will contact your references. I am not getting a commission for this ad, you know.
  • I have a feeling that The Star isn’t the preferred O&G job recruitment portal now. I see more adverts via social media. What do you think, is it a step change that the papers need to embrace?
  • I’m looking for jobs for 4Q2016. Send me your POs.

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

Food choice of the week? Any weight loss diet.

Let’s get a bit nostalgic with the book selection.

Units, UK partner to end risk sharing contract for offshore oilfield

August 21, 2016

Dateline 2016-07-11, Asia Review:

Risk sharing contracts were introduced by Petronas in an attempt to develop smaller and marginal oilfields and increase oil recovery amid depleting fossil fuel resources in Southeast Asia’s third largest economy. Unlike traditional production sharing contracts, parties bound under risk sharing pacts enjoy a prior-agreed rate of return, while risks are shared even if an exploration fails to yield results.
