‘Diversification is key to Malaysia OGSE companies’ long-term survival

March 15, 2019

And congratulations Mohd Yazid Ja’afar .

Dateline 2019-02-08, Sarawak Tribune:

Malaysian oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies must diversify their businesses to remain competitive amidst signs of greater market volatility in 2019, said Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC).
Deputy chief executive officer Mohd Yazid Ja’afar said while oil prices had risen since the beginning of the year, concerns about a supply glut and weakness in the global economy would keep prices on a tight leash, as evident from the general cautiousness of global oil companies and their continuous push for cost efficiencies.

According to its “Top 100 OGSE Companies in Malaysia FY2017” report, while volatility of the oil price is expected to persist in 2019 global oil and gas development activities are expected to increase in the coming years, with operators aiming to move forward to develop new offshore fields, particularly those located in deep waters.

IEM Shout Out – 2019-01 Talk on “Offshore Drilling Rig Operations”

December 31, 2018

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 12th Jan 2019. It is worth XX CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The talk will be presented by Ir. Razak Yakob.

And here I thought, the most important equipment is the drilling engineer.

The most important equipment required in a drilling operation is a drilling rig.  Drilling in offshore environment makes it more expensive and complex with much higher risk.  In this talk, you will be introduced to the different types of drilling rigs used for offshore drilling operations.  Each rig type is specific for a limited drilling operation, environment and local market condition.  Selecting a rig requires understanding of both technical and commercial requirements.  In addition, the talk shall also be covering the various major equipment you can find on the rig.

Ir. Razak Yakob is a Drilling Engineering Consultant and a part time Lecturer for Petroleum Engineering.  Razak has been in the oil and gas industry for more than 20 years, working for multinationals and local companies. His core expertise is in Drilling Engineering with the working experiences spanning from development and exploration, technical support, training, competency development, finance and consultancy. As an independent consultant, he has worked in many parts of the world. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree majoring in Petroleum Engineering and a minor in Mechanical Design.  Razak is the Deputy Chairman for the Oil, Gas and Mining Technical Division and an IEM Council Member.

Standing firm over oil and gas

December 7, 2018

Dateline 2018-10-14, Borneo Post:

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has reiterated that Sarawak will not compromise on regulatory rights over its oil and gas activities.
He said the state had amended its Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958 to further strengthen the regulatory rights over oil and gas activities in Sarawak.
“I would like to assure you once again that we will not compromise on the issue of Sarawak oil and gas. The oil and gas are ours and the OMO 1958 gave us full control over oil and gas in our state.
“Other parties (industry players) can develop our resources and our gas but they cannot do so if they do not have licences issued by the State of Sarawak through PETROS (Petroleum Sarawak Bhd),” he said during the parade and rally in conjunction with Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 82nd birthday celebration at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang here yesterday.

IEM Shout Out – 2018-10 Two Day Course on Understanding Process Control For Oil & Gas Production Operators, Technicians And Engineers

September 17, 2018

My technical division will be hosting a 2 day course on the 16th and 17th October 2018. It is worth 13 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Associate Professor Dr. Syamsul Rizal Abd. Shukor, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Zainal Ahmad and Ir. Dr. John Eow.

The oil & gas production processes (such as sand separation, produced water treatment, seawater filtration, crude oil and gas treatment) require reliable monitoring and control strategy to maintain optimum operational performance. Moreover, process operations are always being affected by disturbances, which negatively affect product quality and cause unplanned process shutdown. Therefore, a good understanding and competency on the major oil & gas production process operations and control are vital for the production personnel. This 2-day course is designed to educate the participants on the engineering design and process control practices in the oil & gas production processes, such as sand separation, produced water treatment, and crude oil desalting.

The course will cover the following major topics:
• Introduction to Oil & Gas Production Processes (such as sand separation, produced water treatment, crude oil treatment, etc.)
• Basics of Process Control
• Process Characteristics: Static and Dynamic
• Final Control Elements
• Controller Algorithm and Controller Tuning
• Single & Multiple Control Loops

Upon completion, the participants will be able to understand the process control fundamentals related to oil & gas production processes.   Moreover, they will have the basic knowledge to apply the process control concepts in monitoring their production process performance, and for better controller tuning to optimize their production outputs.
