From Bernama – PETRONAS Identifies Source Of Oil Sheen (Newfield)

July 16, 2010

Looks like Newfield is in the news … not in a good way.

From Bernama, dateline 2010-07-10:

PETRONAS has identified a damage point on a production pipeline operated by Newfield Peninsula Malaysia Inc, as the source of the oil sheen, sighted near offshore platforms off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

“Subsea investigations detected early this morning, one damage point on a production pipeline operated by Newfield Peninsula Malaysia Inc,” it said in a statement.

“Initial visual inspection results indicate the pipeline had been damaged by activities of an unidentified marine vessel unrelated to Newfield’s operations.

“Repair work on the affected pipeline is in progress,” it added.

Yesterday, Petronas took emergency measures to shut down production pipelines at the 240km offshore platforms, after a thin layer of oil sheen was sighted.

IEM Shout Out – Multiphase Boosting & Metering: Field Proven Systems for Increased Oil and Gas Recovery

July 14, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 17th July, 2010. It’ll be at 9:30 am (makan-makan at 9:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

This paper will show that the Multiphase Boosting and Metering Systems facilitate a new but proven approach for development and exploration of typical fields, albeit onshore, offshore or subsea, and look into the technical aspects related to the implementation and operation of Multiphase Pumps, Multiphase Compressors as well as Multiphase Flowmeters (Vx technology).

The Speaker, Mr. Mads Hjelmeland currently holds the position of Area Sales Manager for Pumps and Subsea Systems with Framo Engineering Asia Pacific.

Get the form here.  Flyers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

OGFJ – Malaysia goes deeper and further afield

July 12, 2010

Here’s an article from the Oil & Gas Financial Journal. I was one of the hundreds interviewed, but I guess I’m Too Sexy for this Sheet:

When Malaysia´s Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak unveiled its highly anticipated New Economic Model (NEM) in March 2010, he re-emphasized the importance of the oil & gas industry for Malaysia. “In oil and gas, we have one of our nation’s most visible and valued champions in PETRONAS. It has built a strong brand internationally, and I believe now we must also help drive growth here in Malaysia with even greater support for local suppliers as it grows. Beyond the core oil and gas sector, however, Malaysia’s international energy expertise can help companies in this industry and beyond expand internationally by sharing its know-how, partnering on international bids and offering support on a truly global scale. The strength of having a well-developed pool of local talent and companies which are able to compete globally gives us a lead advantage.”

Sabah MP drills deep into oil blocks fiasco

July 11, 2010

The government said that the oil was never really ours in the first place. But, I guess the controversy will keep conspiracy theorists, opponents and ‘tell-all’ expose publishers in business. Anyone want to add more fuel to the fire?

From freemalaysiatoday,  dateline 2010-07-01:

KOTA KINABALU: Tawau MP Chua Soon Bui has called for a White Paper on the controversial ceding of three million acres of Sabah’s oil-rich maritime territory to Brunei.

She said Malaysians were confused and would like to know the truth behind the ceding of the two blocks, in light of the numerous statements made by various government representatives.

The statements, however, failed to answer the many lingering doubts over the move which is estimated to have caused Malaysia to lose about RM320 billion in oil and gas revenue.

“It is not just the loss of valuable oil and gas productions, but it is also the loss of Malaysian territorial waters for transportation, marine life and food resources,” said Chua.

“A White Paper on the matter would be in the interests of all Malaysians, especially to those in Sabah and Labuan.

“It is therefore with sincere intention that I propose to the Prime Minister’s Department to clarify all the doubts and ensure that the rights and interests of the people are always protected,” she added in her adjournment speech in Parliament recently.

And since we’re on the topic of conceding territory to ASEAN neighbours, here’s something from the same e-paper on Batu Puteh.

PETRONAS May Begin Ethiopian Gas Exports in 2015

July 10, 2010

Yo, PETRONAS staff who volunteer to go to dangerous places like Iraq because the pay is higher. Well, if you’re reading this, get ready for a windfall in 2015.

Taken from Bloomberg, dateline 2010-07-02:

July 2 (Bloomberg) — Petroliam Nasional Bhd., Malaysia’s state-owned oil company, may begin exporting natural gas from Ethiopia in five years, when production starts at a plant it is building in the country, a Mines Ministry official said.

Fields being developed by Petronas in Ethiopia contain as much as 4 trillion cubic feet of gas, Eshetu Chala, senior economist at the Addis Ababa-based ministry, said in an interview yesterday in Kampala, Uganda. Annual production figures have yet to be determined, he said.

IEM Shout Out – Control in Biomedical Engineering

July 9, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 12th July, 2010. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

As the use of anesthetics in operation is to loss of sensation even by painful stimulation, here a question arose is what is sufficient dosage of anesthetics for a patient during a surgery? Because an overdose of anaesthetic can result in brain injury from asphyxiation, cardiovascular injury which can cause heart attack or stroke, tracheal damage, and wrongful death.

Closed loop system for patient under general anesthesia and diabetes type I patient is designed. The controller design in biomedical using model-based and model-free technique is discussed. Model-based optimal closed loop clinical trial for general anesthesia is discussed.

The speaker, Dr. Syafiie has a doctorate degree from the University of Valladolid, Spain in area of system engineering and automatic control. He did post doctoral research at department of electrical energy, system and automation collaborated with department of anesthesia and university hospital at Ghent University, Belgium. His project was development and clinical validation of a MIMO model-based predictive closed-loop system to guide patient-individualized ICU sedation.

Dr. S Syafiie has published several articles in area of model-free and model based control engineering and image processing. His current post is senior lecturer at department of chemical and environmental engineering at university putra malaysia.
