PM: We’ll consider Sarawak’s request for higher oil, gas royalties

The federal government will give utmost consideration to Sarawak’s request for higher oil and gas royalties, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The Prime Minister said the federal government had no qualms in negotiating on any matters with the state government over its interests.

“The federal government will give utmost consideration to this matter (request for higher oil and gas royalties),” he said at the Malaysia Gawai Dayak Open House 2014 at Dataran Kipas here tonight.

Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem were present.

Highest and Cheapest Gasoline Prices by Country

Price per gallon of gasoline: $2.42
Rank by most expensive gas: 54
Rank by pain at the pump: 37

Malaysia’s extensive fuel subsidies give it one of the lowest gas prices in the 61-country ranking.

Cheap gas comes at a cost; despite strong economic growth, Fitch Ratings lowered the country’s credit rating last year. Soon after the rating drop, Prime Minister Najib Rasak cut the fuel subsidy by almost 23 cents a gallon.

Gas prices rose 11 percent since July when priced in Malaysian ringgits.

Bigger role for natural gas, says Petronas VP

Considering the price of natural gas used to generate electricity will based on the market price by January 2016, then yeah.

Natural gas will play a central role in meeting the world’s increasing energy demand in the coming decades, said Mohamad Johari Dasri, Vice President, Production Malaysia, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

He said one possibility of trading natural gas is in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) which is currently representing almost 30 per cent of the imported natural gas worldwide.

In his keynote address titled “The Oil and Gas Industry in the Next Five Years”, he said the global energy map is changing, with potentially far-reaching consequences for energy markets and trade.

It is being redrawn by the resurgence in oil and gas production in the United States and could be further reshaped by a retreat from nuclear power in some countries, continued rapid growth in the use of wind and solar technologies and by the global spread of unconventional gas production, he said.

He said taking all new developments and policies into account, global demand has surged nearly 30 per cent to 88 million b/d (all liquids) since 1995 and expected to expand by around 12 per cent and to make up around 30 per cent of the world energy mix by 2020, according to EIA reference scenario.

Is Malaysia’s Pengerang Part of Greater Singapore?

Pengerang used to be a fishing village famous for its succulent lobsters. Each weekend a good number of Singaporeans would take a two-hour drive to get to the southernmost tip of Johor on the east to savour Pengerang’s lobsters and other sea delights fresh from the Johor Straits. It had at least eight seafood restaurants, way too many for a tiny township.

Two years ago, reclamation work started in the coastal area of Pengerang and there were no more fishermen and neither was there any more coast for fishing. This was the start of a massive RM170 billion (US$53 billion) project called the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC).

This is said to be the biggest project ever by Malaysia in terms of scale and size. Lawmakers and corporate leaders claim that this project Pengerang in will turn Malaysia into a mega petrochemical. But what about the Greater Singapore plan?

Oil and gas firm’s gift to rural kids

Thanks to a RM30,000 sponsorship, students in the interior will have NiE pullouts to make their English lessons interesting.

WHEN it comes to education, schools in rural areas are usually the ones that warrant the most attention.

With this in mind, oil and gas company ConocoPhillips Malaysia has lent a helping hand by sponsoring RM30,000 of The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) pullout.

“I think NiE is an exciting programme and it is something that ConocoPhillips is very proud to be a part of,” said ConocoPhillips Malaysia president Mark Wheeler.

A Thai fisherman was rescued by a Malaysian oil rig worker following a seven-hour swim after falling off a boat early on Saturday morning.

The man fell into the water around 130 kilometres off the coast of Kuala Terengganu in northern Malaysia.

The victim, identified as Tok Saphon Samechit, 32, is believed to have fallen overboard at about 4am while relieving himself over the side of the boat.

Expect ANOTHER 40% hike in electricity prices over the next 18 months – NGO

The Association of Water and Energy Research (Awer) predicts a further hike in electricity tariffs, by 24 to 39 percent within 18 months from now.

This will come about when the price of natural gas used to generate electricity is based on the market price by January 2016, Awer president S Piarapakaran said in a statement today.

Piarapakaran (right) said the Energy Commission announced in 2013 that the Incentive-based Regulation (IBR) will be go on a trial run from Jan 1 this year and the fuel cost pass-through mechanism will be implemented
