HOW SAFE? Johor reclamation project TWICE the size of Ang Mo Kio to ‘create oil storage hub’

September 7, 2014

What you don’t realise, is that we want to reclaim land up to Batu Puteh. Go, Johor!

Dateline 2014-06-27, Malaysia Chronicle:

One of the two massive reclamation projects coming up in the Johor Strait will be turned into an oil storage hub to capture spill-over oil and gas business from Singapore, an official with the company involved in the works said yesterday.

The project involving Benalec Holdings will raise a 1,410ha man-made island near Jurong Island, the firm’s chief operating officer Bernard Boey told The Straits Times.

The reclamation is expected to begin before the end of the year.

The project, located off Johor’s Tanjung Piai coast, is roughly twice the size of Ang Mo Kio.

Sabah NGO: No tricks please, it’s our oil!

September 6, 2014

Oo, Perkasa is an ‘extremist fringe group’. This comment is made by a group that doesn’t feel safe enough to operate in Malaysia.

Dateline 2014-06-27, FMT:

The UK-based Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BoPIM), a human rights organisation on Sabah, Sarawak rights issues, has expressed dismay that the national oil corporation Petronas and an extremist fringe group in the corridors of power are engaged in a war of words over who owns the country’s oil and gas resources.

“There are no two ways about it,” said BoPIM President Daniel John Jambun in a telephone call to FMT in Kota Kinabalu. “The oil and gas reserves in the country belong, by and large, to the people of Sabah and Sarawak and no one in the peninsula should imagine that it belongs exclusively to their community.”

Asia’s Rising Resilience to Oil Prices

September 5, 2014

Go, Malaysia. And Petrofac.

Dateline 2014-06-26, The Wall Street Journal:

With fighting in Iraq threatening to drive oil prices higher, Asia’s external balances could come under pressure.

Brent crude hit $115 per barrel last week and the risk of a further rise can’t be discounted due to the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, which has large oil reserves and controls roughly 3% of global supplies, largely through its southern fields around Basra.

India, China and South Korea are among the Asian economies that rely heavily on oil from Iraq, but spillovers will affect the entire region, as Asia’s industrialized, exporting countries are large net importers of oil. Malaysia is the region’s only net exporter of energy commodities, making it a beneficiary of higher oil prices (note that we do not adjust our analysis for the possibility that demand could fall as oil prices rise).

Perkasa: Petronas built by Malays, belongs to Malays

September 4, 2014

Dateline 2014-06-26, The Malays Mail Online:

Perkasa today demanded the exit of Petronas chief executive Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas for saying the state oil firm belongs to all Malaysians, insisting it was built via Malay effort and was consequently owned by the community.

The Malay rights group’s president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said it was “shrewd” of Shamsul to state that the country’s oil resource belonged to all Malaysians so as to imply “he was forced to give handouts to Bumiputera companies”.

Who is Nio Petroleum?

September 3, 2014

Hmm,  a series of press releases related to the above. And I really want to follow in their footsteps:

Finance Asia:

Barclays natural resource investments (BNRI), a division of Barclays Capital, has invested in a Southeast Asia-focused oil and gas development company Nio Petroleum.

Nio Petroleum is an oil and gas development and production company established in 2009, with a primary focus on offshore assets in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia. It seeks out undeveloped discoveries, marginal fields and late-life assets in Southeast Asia, which it will add value to through the innovative use of existing and new technologies and commercial know-how, Barclays Capital and Nio Petroleum said in a joint press release yesterday.

Nio Petroleum is founded and managed by Richard Hall and Rory Edwards, a duo with a track record in oil and gas development, derived from working with national and independent oil and service companies over the past 25 years. Their experience includes schemes in the North Sea and offshore Southeast Asia, which have enabled the monetisation of small fields or extended the life of mature fields.

Oilvoice.com:

…Nio Petroleum Limited (Nio) is working in the Asia Pacific region.

Nio’s primary focus is offshore assets in the Asia Pacific region, particularly Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia. In May 2010, Nio acquired Blocks SB307 and SB308 offshore Sabah in Malaysia in conjunction with Lundin Petroleum and PETRONAS Carigali.

PETRONAS, 2010-05-19:

PETRONAS AWARDS TWO EXPLORATION BLOCKS TO LUNDIN PETROLEUM, NIO PETROLEUM AND PETRONAS CARIGALI

PETRONAS today awarded Blocks SB307 and SB308 offshore Sabah under a single Production Sharing Contract (PSC) to a partnership comprising Lundin Malaysia B.V., Nio Petroleum Ltd., and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.

Blocks SB307 and SB308 measure approximately 6,230 sq km and is located in water depths of up to 70 metres. Both blocks have been explored since 1965 and have led to the discovery of the producing Barton, South Furious and St. Joseph fields, currently operated by Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd under a different PSC.

Bloomberg Businessweek:

Nio Petroleum Limited offers oil and gas development and production services in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Australia. Nio Petroleum Limited was incorporated in 2009 and is based in London, United Kingdom.

 EDP 24:

Nio Petroleum (Sabah), set up by two former managers at oil services and production firm Petrofac, is being bought by EnQuest, based in Aberdeen.

The firm was set up in 2010 by Richard Hall, who previously worked with Norwich-based Acteon before moving to Petrofac, and Rory Edwards, also previously at Petrofac.

It said its niche was opening up dormant discoveries and redeveloping mature, previously developed fields and was working in partnership with Malaysian state firm Petronas and Sweden’s Lundin on two blocks of the coast of Sabah, Borneo.

Bloomberg Businessweek:

As of November 9, 2012, Nio Petroleum (Sabah) Limited operates as a subsidiary of EnQuest PLC.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on An Introduction to A Pneumatic Conveying System, Its Advantages and Practical Selection Guidelines

August 31, 2014

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on Saturday 6th Septermber, 2014 by Ir. Low Chew Eow (Rocky). It’ll be at 9:00am (makan-makan at 8.30am) at Wisma IEM.

A Pneumatic Conveying system is used to transfer items from one place to another. It is widely found in various industries. In the petrochemical industry, a Pneumatic Conveying system is used to transfer products in the form of powder or pellets into the bagging system for example. There are various types of Pneumatic Conveying system and each type is selected to best suit its applications. A Pneumatic Conveying system is usually chosen when it has to meet various stringent requirements for a clean environment, having minimum maintenance downtime and needing to operate within a congested plant footprint. It is also very reliable when a long continuous operation is required. The talk will provide an introduction of the system’s design and selection criteria for different type of systems such as “Open/Close Loop”, “Positive or Negative Conveying” and “Dilute or Dense Phase”. It will also impart knowledge on equipment selection that makes up the complete system such as blower or screw compressor, cooler (if required), type of diverter valve and type of piping to be used.

Ir. Low Chew Eow (Rocky) graduated from the University of Glasgow, UK with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. He has more than 24 years of working experience in various roles, of which about 16 years are in the oil and gas industry. He specializes in Pneumatic Conveying System in the food, mining and petrochemical industry where he has been involved from the designing, fabrication, installation and commissioning stages. He is currently the Head of Package Equipment Department in Technip Consultant (M) Sdn. Bhd. He is also the Member of Expert Network specializing in Pneumatic Conveying System within the Technip group. You can register here and download the flyer here.
